2005 Ford Thunderbird | Review | Buying Guide
The 2005 Ford Thunderbird Roadster is refreshed with new exterior and interior colors and refined aluminum detailing on the doors and centerstack. A two-seat convertible with an abundance of power and style that purposefully evokes the golden age of the American Car, the Thunderbird is as recognizable a model you’ll ever see. Also, with the original model unveiled on Oct 22, 1954, the 2005 marks the 50 th anniversary of this icon.
The Thunderbird comes with a standard power-folding soft top with heated rear glass window. However, there’s also an optional 83-lb removable hard top with classic porthole windows. A secure pin-and-bolt system at the two front attachment points and two clamps at the rear connect the removable top to the car.
Under the Hood
The 2005 Ford Thunderbird returns with the 3.9-liter V8 featuring coil-on-plug ignition with platinum-tipped spark plugs, low-friction pistons and dual exhaust that can produce 280 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 286 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
5-speed automatic transmission is standard. Ford’s SelectShift transmission is offered as an option. It allows drivers to command gear changes similar to a conventional manual transmission, but without the clutch. The transmission features a one-piece die-cast aluminum case for reduced weight.
The Thunderbird is the first Ford convertible to come with combination head-and-chest side airbags. Other safety features include an anti-theft system, the LATCH child seat system, a perimeter alarm with an LED indicator and an emergency inside trunk release.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
New 2005 colors, Bronze and Medium Steel Blue, replace Merlot, Vintage Mint Green and Light Ice Blue Metallic. New partial interior colors are Medium Steel Blue and Torch Red. Though a convertible, the Thunderbird still has room enough to carry your goods. The trunk is 6.9 cubic feet, spacious enough for two sets of golf clubs. In addition, a soft vinyl boot is provided to cover the black, woven soft-top when it’s down.
Base Deluxe models certainly live up to their name. Air conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate controls, a power tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, leather upholstery; bucket seats, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer are all standard. Premium trim adds heated seats and stylish 17-inch chrome alloy wheels.
