2005 GMC Canyon | Review | Buying Guide
The Canyon was introduced last year as a replacement for the Sonoma. Larger, roomier, stronger and more versatile, the Canyon brought in a new level of commitment and quality to the GMC brand in the compact/midsize pickup truck segment.
With GMC, it’s all about Professional grade quality. As they say, that has to do with exceeding customers' expectations. With a truck, the tendency is not to change the offering as much, so you need a solid starting point. As last year showed, GMC certainly achieved that.
As it was unveiled mid-year in 2004, not much changes with the 2005 Canyon. It is offered in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab models with SL or uplevel SLE trim. Regular cabs seat three. Extendeds come with dual rear-hinged back doors and seat five. The four-door crew cab seats up to six and has a 5-ft-long cargo box vs. a 6-ft bed.
Under the Hood
There is one standard engine and one optional engine for all 2005 Canyon models. The base model is a 2.8-liter inline 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.
The optional engine is a 3.5-liter inline 5-cylinder motor. It jumps the specs up to 220 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. Both engines team with manual or automatic transmission, and either rear-wheel drive or 4WD that has low-range gearing but must be disengaged on dry pavement.
There are two suspension packages with the Canyon. The base suspension is designated Z85, but a high-riding Z71 off-road setup is available linewide.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Safety is of top priority with any vehicle, and the Canyon is no exception. All models include ABS and offer optional curtain side airbags for head protection in all seating rows. Traction control is available on 2WD models and now includes limited-slip differential.
All Canyons use 15-inch alloy wheels. There are a bevy of models available when you factor in the different suspension configurations and model trims, and all but the base SL Z85 model are quite comfortable.
There are also plenty of options to match the model lineup. Some of the availables include OnStar, satellite radio, a power sunroof, an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, leather upholstery, carpeting and a bed extender.
