2005 GMC Safari | Review | Buying Guide
The Safari, GMC’s midsize van, receives a grand total of zero changes from last year’s model. But that really doesn’t matter that much to customers looking for a no-nonsense minivan. The 2005 Safari still has one of the highest horsepower ratings in its class. And like last year, a roomy interior cabin and a thorough set of safety features compliment this power.
Like the Chevrolet Astro, with whom the Safari shares its truck-based design, 2005 will be the final year for the GMC minivan. It has earned its rest however, and will confidently roll out of 2005 with the same poise with which it has approached each year.
Under the Hood
Under the Safari’s hood is a 4.3-liter V6, able to provide 190 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed electronic automatic transmission with overdrive.
This combination enables Safari to tow trailers weighing up to 5,400 pounds. All models feature 16-inch wheels and P215/70R16 all-season steel belted radial tires, with aluminum wheels standard on all uplevel SLE and SLT models.
2005 Safari models can come with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The choice is up to the shopper. Optional are a trailering package and limited-slip differential. The trailer package includes a platform hitch and an 8-lead wiring harness.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The versatile Safari has 170.4 cubic feet of cargo volume in its hold, perfect for all sorts of cumbersome items. With three rows of seating, up to eight passengers can fit comfortably inside
The 2005 Safari has energy-absorbing foam attached behind trim panels, moldings, the headliner and all other vital areas to protect occupants from potential head injuries. It also has a standard four-wheel antilock braking system featuring four-wheel power discs, a highly responsive Hydroboost hydraulic assist power brake booster and GM's Dynamic Rear Proportioning.
The braking system includes highly audible warning chimes that alert drivers of a failure or malfunction in the braking system and the need for repair. The chimes are activated whenever the red BRAKE or amber ABS telltale is illuminated.
Comfort and style options include leather upholstery, running boards, rear air conditioning, a rear heater, an overhead console, a roof rack and a cargo net.
