2005 Used GMC Savana 1500 Buying Guide

There are a number of GMC Savana models to choose from, and they all offer Professional Grade quality and commitment. The 1500 is the smallest of the lot, though as a big-time full-size van the very notion of ‘small’ has to be taken in context. There is no doubting these vehicles’ ability to carry passengers and cargo, that’s for sure.

The Savana is a popular choice for business customers looking for a full-size cargo carrier. Savana is also a very popular people-carrier—for both families and transport companies.

Savana models have two swing-open rear cargo doors and, on the passenger side, either 60/40 doors or a sliding door. Newly optional, from last year, are 60/40 doors on the driver side.

Under the Hood

The 1500 is the sole Savana model on the passenger side of things to offer all-wheel drive. Base rear-wheel drive models receive a 4.3-liter V6 engine with 195 horsepower at 4600 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed electronic automatic transmission with overdrive and torque converter.

All-wheel drive Savana 1500 models get more push with a standard 5.3-liter V8 with 285 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. This engine is optional with 2WD models.

The Savana is sturdy and rugged. Its three-piece boxed frames provide up to 43 percent more torsional stiffness, and upgraded independent front suspensions offer flat handling and more isolation from road noise. With the all-wheel drive model, an AWD system is employed that continuously transfers torque from slipping wheels to those with traction.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

While 2500 and 3500 Savana models come in an extended length body, the 1500 only offers the regular length frame. The 1500 can seat up to eight full-size adults with ease. The Savana’s front seats are buckets; others are benches, which can be removed to make room for large items.

There are a number of equipment packages that can be added to the standard base model. One among these is an SLE group, which includes such things as rear air conditioning, a rear heater, cruise control, heated power mirrors, power windows and door locks and remote keyless entry.
