2005 GMC Sierra 3500 | Review | Buying Guide
The big news last year was the introduction of single-rear-wheel one-ton Sierra 3500s. These models were available in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab configurations with 4WD and a long 8-foot cargo box, and were rated at 9,900 pounds. In addition, they were also offered in a chassis cab configuration.
Well, GMC retains that bolstered lineup for 2005, making a few tweaks here and there in order to stay ahead of the pack. With the 3500, the makers at GM’s Professional Grade division offer regular cabs and extended cabs with the long box. Regular cab 3500s have two doors, while extended cabs have two additional rear-hinged back half-doors and a back seat.
There are three engines to choose from this year, including a diesel monster that was given an upgrade for more performance ability. You won’t be disappointed, that’s for sure.
Under the Hood
However, if you don’t ask for it, then you will be given the standard 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine. But that is not a bad thing. It is capable of churning out 300 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 360 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 5-speed manual transmission is standard; 4-speed automatic is optional.
For 2005, two optional engines are offered. One is an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 with 330 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 450 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. It can be mated to either 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic with Engine Grade Braking, an electronic feature that makes an automatic downshift when descending steep slopes.
The second engine available for 2005 is a 6.6-liter Duramax Turbodiesel V8 with 300-310 horsepower at 3000 rpm and between 520-605 lb-ft of torque at 1600-1800 rpm (depending on your transmission choice).
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Models in the Sierra heavy-duty series are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. An optional Z82 trailering package is also offered. It includes a heavy-duty hitch platform, integrated electric brake connection, a wiring harness and a high-capacity air cleaner. A suspension is also offered.
There are four trims to choose from: Work, base, SLE and, with the extended cab, a top-line SLT. The Work model does just what it should, featuring a special graphite-colored rubberized vinyl floor covering for your dirty boots.
