2005 GMC Sierra Hybrid | Review | Buying Guide
GMC takes a leadership role in the fight against emissions with the new Sierra Hybrid. And though the Hybrid doesn’t drastically cut down on emissions, by using an advanced engine it is able to get fuel ratings more often associated with sedans.
The Hybrid system is available on 2WD and 4WD short-bed extended cabs. As in hybrid cars, the gas engine shuts off at stoplights to save fuel, and an electric motor restarts the engine when the gas pedal is pushed. Unlike most hybrids, the electric motor does not help propel the vehicle.
Under the Hood
Those of you thinking that you might lose some power with the Sierra Hybrid need to think again. That’s because the Vortec 5300 V8 engine delivers the same specs as its non-hybrid counterpart. That means it is able to produce up to 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 335 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 4-speed automatic transmission is standard.
The Hybrid’s fuel efficiency comes from its ability to automatically stop and restart the engine under different operating circumstances. Instead of a conventional starter motor and alternator, the Sierra Hybrid uses a compact 14-kw electric induction motor or starter generator integrated in a patented manner between the engine and transmission.
The starter generator provides fast, quiet starting power and allows automatic engine stops/starts to conserve fuel. It also smoothes out any driveline surges, generates electrical current to charge the batteries and run auxiliary power outlets and provides coast-down regenerative braking.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Another useful feature with the Hybrid is the inclusion of four 120-volt/20-amp electrical auxiliary power outlets ( APO). The power outlets are located under the rear seat of the cab and in the pickup bed and can be used without taking up the bed space. Did somebody say tailgate party?
The 2005 Sierra Hybrid is only available in the following states, for now: California , Florida , Nevada , Oregon and Washington. Hopefully it will be offered in more areas in the near future in order to curb the detrimental effects of vehicle emissions.
For 2005, you can equip most Sierras with the new OnStar system. The new system features hardware with digital and analog coverage, as well as upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy.
