2005 Honda CR-V | Review | Buying Guide
Like most Honda models, the CR-V has a treasure chest full of awards and accolades. This isn’t surprising considering a solid engineering philosophy underlies all Hondas. For 2004, the CR-V added such titles as Edmunds' "Lowest True Cost to Own: SUV under $25,000" and Intellichoice's "Best Overall Value of the Year: Segment Winner, Compact Utility over $21,000."
For 2005, the CR-V gets a number of interior and exterior trim updates, along with more standard safety equipment and a new top-line model. The uplevel Special Edition (SE) is a leather-clad luxury version of the hard-working compact SUV.
Now safer, the 2005 CR-V becomes even more appealing than before. Front side airbags were an extra-cost feature last year, but are standard for 2005. They are joined by head-protecting curtain side airbags for both seating rows.
Under the Hood
One engine is used to power the 2005 lineup of CR-Vs. It is a 2.4-liter dual-overhead cam inline 4-cylinder model. Power ratings for this year are 160 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.
There are two transmissions offered: 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic. The automatic system is brand new this year, and it provides a seamless transfer between gears so you can concentrate on the road.
Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are both offered on 2005 CR-V trims, though the new SE model can only be had with AWD. A new cam-driven real-time AWD mechanism replaces the previous pump-type system, improving acceleration and hill climbing performance from the previous model.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
2005 CR-Vs have a more contemporary look than ever before. The key updates include a redesigned front grill, cylindrical-shaped headlights and an aerodynamic front bumper. A new side sill and side protector adorns the side of the CR-V, while newly designed rear combination lights and rear bumper boost the rear of the vehicle.
Interior improvements match those found on the exterior. On the EX trim level, steering mounted audio controls and an outside temperature gauge have been added. Also, all models now feature new retractable grab rails and larger seatback pockets. Finally, a new Ivory interior color replaces the Saddle interior color.
Along with leather upholstery, the new SE model adds a number of other decadent features for driving comfort. Included are heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated power mirrors.
