2005 Honda Civic | Review | Buying Guide
Probably the most recognizable compact car on the planet, the Honda Civic lineup continues to dominate the segment with its diversity. There is a Hybrid model (covered separately) along with an absolute glut of different models ranging from price-buster up to speedy Si hatchback (also covered separately).
That lineup grows in 2005 with the introduction of a Special Edition package to top-line EX models. It is available in both coupe and sedan configurations, and ups the comfort considerably.
Included with the new Special Edition models is an upgraded audio head unit that not only adds in-dash 6-disc changer capability, but will also play MP3's and includes an auxiliary input jack for plug-in of portable music devices and satellite radio receivers. Also added are alloy wheels, an exclusive leather wrapped steering wheel, a wing spoiler and Special Edition badging.
Under the Hood
DX, VP and LX models use a standard 1.7-liter inline 4-cylinder engine capable of 115 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 110 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. It is teamed to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic setup.
The top-line EX model, as well as the new Special Edition trims, uses a similar 1.7-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. However, it pumps out 127 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 114 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm.
Once again, Honda provides a series of Civic coupes and sedans that go a long way in between fill-ups. The worst mileage you can get this year is with automatic-transmission models with the base I4 engine, and their rating is still 29/38 mpg (city/highway).
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
DX models are really stripped-down, but Honda carries over the popular Civic Value Package. The Value Package adds air conditioning, a CD player and a center console with armrest and storage on both body styles, resulting in a savings of approximately $500—that is basically what the VP trim stands for (Value Package).
The LX model starts where the VP models ends—in terms of standard features. It includes cruise control, a height-adjustable driver seat, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, a tachometer, map lights and floormats.
The Civic coupe is the only affordable compact class car to earn a five-star rating for all passengers in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) frontal and side impact crash tests.
