2005 Honda Pilot | Review | Buying Guide
The Honda Pilot gains 15 horsepower this year, giving the midsize sport utility vehicle a little more snarl and jump out of the starting gates. The surge in muscle is joined by new equipment for both comfort and safety.
The Pilot is a big, roomy SUV with three rows of seating for up to eight passengers. You can easily carry around plenty of goods with 60/40 split folding bench seats for the second and third rows, plus a one-piece liftgate with fixed glass. The total cargo volume is tallied at 90.3 cubic feet.
On the inside, designers and engineers have updated this year’s Pilot for more accessibility and refinement. A revised instrument panel adds ambient lighting, while there is also an additional driver footrest, a new integrated remote key fob and a new magnesium frame steering wheel.
Under the Hood
The 2005 Honda Pilot features an advanced 3.5-liter, SOHC, 24-valve, 60-degree, V6 engine with an aluminum-block-and-head design that is compact, light and powerful. The new power ratings for 2005 are as follows: 255 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm.
A wide variety of technologies have been engineered to provide 250 horsepower, a broad and flat torque curve, very low emissions, high fuel efficiency and instantaneous throttle response. The engine is coupled with an innovative drive-by-wire throttle system, which reduces overall weight by incorporating the cruise control function, and helps to reduce shift shock by communicating with the transmission during up and down shifts.
All three Pilot trims (LX, EX and EX-L) have all-wheel drive. The system lacks low-range gearing, but has a dashboard button for locking-in an even front/rear power split.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
A tire-pressure monitor is newly standard this year. It joins an LX package that includes antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and front side airbags. Comfort features include front and rear air conditioning, an interior air filter, power mirrors, windows and door locks and an AM/FM/CD player.
Midlevel EX models add automatic climate controls, an AM/FM/cassette player with in-dash 6-disc CD changer, steering-wheel radio controls, a universal garage-door opener, roof rails and alloy wheels.
Top-line EX-Ls have leather upholstery, an antiskid system, heated front seats, heated power mirrors and a sunroof. They can also be had with a DVD system or a navigation system.
