2005 Honda S2000 | Review | Buying Guide
The S2000 is easily the most performance-oriented of all the Honda models. That is, it is the sports car of the lot. While the stable includes hybrids, dependable coupes and sedans and highly versatile sport utility vehicles, the S2000 focuses on one thing: speed.
Last year, the Honda S2000 received a major round of improvements that included a larger displacement engine with a broader power band, a re-tuned suspension and enhancements to the body and interior designed to make the roadster even more appealing.
As a result, there are no changes to the 2005 Honda S2000. However, that doesn’t mean that the speedster is any less capable or cool-looking. Only the most hardened cynics would disagree, and that would surely change after a test drive.
Under the Hood
The S2000's power is derived from a 2.2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. The high-revving model produces 240 horsepower at 7200 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 6200 rpm. The dual overhead cam I4 features Honda's Variable Valve-Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC)(TM) technology to provide maximum power and efficiency at both low and high engine speeds.
6-speed manual transmission is standard. The longitudinally mounted transmission uses a compact design that features a direct shift linkage with class-leading feel and short throws.
The rear-wheel-drive S2000 has a torque-sensing limited-slip rear differential for excellent traction in both performance and inclement weather situations. It also uses a hybrid monocoque body for exceptional torsional and bending rigidity. The in-wheel double wishbone suspension (front and rear) is great under hard cornering.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The key design feature of the S2000 is its convertible top. The two-seater employs a power soft top and heated glass rear window, though a removable aluminum hardtop is available through Honda dealers.
The conceptual model for the S2000’s interior was inspired by a Formula 1 racecar's cockpit with a driver-oriented control layout and large performance oriented digital gauges. At the center of it all is a read “Start” button.
Standard equipment includes Xenon headlights, alloy wheels, dual front airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. On the inside, there’s air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, leather upholstery, bucket seats, a center console, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/CD player, a digital clock and a rear defogger.
