2005 Jeep Liberty | Review | Buying Guide
Jeep’s compact sport utility vehicle doesn’t get the full redesign that that the bigger Grand Cherokee does, but it isn’t completely ignored. For 2005, there’s a new engine, new equipment and a freshened look, both inside and out.
Sport and Limited models have a contemporary appearance, while the Renegade is definitely the wild child of the bunch (covered separately). However, Sport and Limited models now offer a diesel engine, one of the first in a smaller SUV for North American markets.
Though you’ll still be able to recognize the 2005 model as a Liberty, most will agree that designers improved the look of the rugged SUV. The 2005 Jeep Liberty struts about with a new front fascia, grille, fog lamps, fender flares, bodyside moldings, a new standard roof racks and wheels.
Under the Hood
Entry-level Sport models come with a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that pumps out 150 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 165 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. It is coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission.
Standard with Limited models and optional with the Sport is a 3.7-liter V6 engine. It will produce 210 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 235 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The 3.7 is mated to either 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
2005 Liberty Sport and Limited models can be fitted with a 2.8-liter common rail diesel engine. Providing class-leading torque and towing (5000 lbs), the diesel engine is rated at an estimated 160 horsepower at 3800 rpm and with 295 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm for unmatched towing power.
All 2005 models offer rear-wheel drive or a choice of two 4WD systems, both with low-range gearing. Jeep's Command-Trac 4WD should not be left engaged on dry pavement, while Selec-Trac 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Sport models have a nice price and a good array of standard features. The list includes air conditioning, cloth upholstery, front bucket seats, a center console, an AM/FM/CD player, a digital clock, a rear defogger and a rear wiper/washer.
Stepping up to the Limited model ups the interior comfort significantly. On top of the Sport’s package, the Limited features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, map lights and more.
Options include a navigation system, a 6-disc CD changer and Infinity speakers.
