2005 Lincoln Aviator | Review | Buying Guide
The 2005 Lincoln Aviator is a credible mid-size SUV offering strong competition in the same segment as the Cadillac SRX and the Acura MDX. Simplifying their line-up with a single trim level that has many of the features from last year’s up level Ultimate edition means an improved list of standards and greater consumer choice from a collection of comprehensive options packages.
Like all Lincoln models, the upscale thoroughbreds in the Ford stable, the Aviator has a heavy emphasis on luxury and performance. Styled like the larger Navigator, the Aviator is similar to its massive relation in many regards. However, it is not just a smaller version without a style of its own and this year’s upgrades add to last year for a combination of performance, luxury and high-tech communications technology that is unprecedented.
Under the Hood
The Aviator is equipped with a 4.6-liter V8 that can produce up to 302 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 300 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm. In other words, there is plenty of kick under the hood of this mid-size luxury SUV. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and comes with rear-wheel-drive, though all-wheel-drive is available. These get between 13 and 18 mpg (city/hwy).
This year, innovative AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control is standard equipment on all models as are 17-inch, seven-spoke machined aluminum wheels. The 2005 Aviator also has some exterior refinements with a chrome grille surround and slots and new exterior colors: Ivory Parchment Clearcoat Tri-Coat, Charcoal Beige Clearcoat Metallic and Light Tundra Clearcoat Metallic. New 17-inch chromed clad and full chrome wheels are available as optional extras.
A 4-wheel independent suspension configuration dampens the biggest shocks, while power-assisted 4-wheel antilock brakes does the stopping. Additional safety features include standard dual front airbags, curtain side airbags, a battery saver feature and rear park assist.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Aviator is big, bold and roomy and now has even more standard features to enhance interior comfort and convenience, including dual-zone automatic climate controls, rear climate controls, cruise control, leather upholstery on 8-way power front bucket seats with lumbar adjustment, power-adjustable pedals, memory settings for the driver’s seat, mirrors and pedals, 2nd- and 3rd-row stowable seats, wood interior trim, heated power mirrors, remote keyless entry and keypad entry.
The stowable seats fold flat to the floor and with optional second-row 40/20/40 split bench seat combined with the standard third-row bench, the Aviator can suit seven adult passengers. The 2005 Aviator options list is also impressive. Major packages include such features as a moonroof, navigation system, heated/cooled seats and so on.
