2005 Pontiac Grand Prix | Review | Buying Guide
Last year, the manufacturers revamped the Grand Prix and let it out of the gates a little early as a spring model. The changes saw an upgrade to nearly every facet of the midsize sedan, placing it right in the middle of the competitive segment battle.
2005 sees a continuation of the modernization process, though without the major upgrades of last year. One thing that seems to have been a concerted effort on the part of Pontiac manufacturers was an attention to comfort. To that end, they made OnStar (with one-year Safe & Sound package) standard on all models.
Other improvements for 2005 include an MP3-capable CD radio replacing the CD/cassette player, an available DVD-based navigation system, remote start availability, available dual-zone air conditioning, rear-seat cupholders and a new family of 16- and 17-inch wheels and wheel covers.
Under the Hood
There are three trim levels with the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix: base, GT and GTP. Base and GT models use a 3.8-liter V6 engine. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and generates 200 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 230 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
The GTP is certainly the fastest of the bunch. Under its hood is a feisty 3.8-liter Supercharged V6 engine, which is capable of pumping out 260 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.
Steering-wheel paddles for manual shifting— Pontiac's TAPshift feature—are part of the GTP's available Competition Group. The option also includes a performance-tuned suspension and antiskid system.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
All models have a center console with integral armrest, storage compartment and two power outlets. Also standard are power programmable door locks, a driver information center, remote keyless entry, the new CD player and rear-seat passthrough.
There are plenty of options to be had as well. GT and GTP models offer a Leather Trim Package, which includes leather upholstery, heated front seats and driver-seat power lumbar adjustment.
In addition to its attractive driving package, the 2005 Grand Prix is also quite safe. All new 2005 Grand Prix models feature driver and front-passenger dual-stage airbags and front-seat safety belt pretensioners. Side-impact head-curtain airbags are also available as an option.
