2005 Pontiac Sunfire | Review | Buying Guide
The Sunfire is one of those cars on the road that doesn’t offer many frills or too much excitement. But on the other hand, customers that come across the Sunfire’s decidedly reasonable price are often warmed with that pleasant feeling of surprise.
The Sunfire is a favorite with young buyers for its sporty style, low price, dependability and versatility. Though a subcompact, the Sunfire still provides a 60/40 split-fold rear seat. The split-fold rear seat extends Sunfire's cargo-carrying capacity by enabling longer items to be conveniently transported inside the vehicle.
For those people who are really on a tight budget, Pontiac does everything to accommodate them with this year’s Sunfire. For 2005, a special-value model called 1SV comes with manual transmission and a CD player, but it cannot be ordered with any options. The costlier base coupe offers the CD player in option packages labeled 1SB and 1SC.
Under the Hood
You’re not going to win any drag races with the Pontiac Sunfire, and if you think you are you’re sorely mistaken. The point of the Sunfire is not speed, but dependability and efficiency. It may not get you there quickly, but slow and steady never hurt the turtle in its race with the hare.
The engine responsible for the Sunfire’s life is a 2.2-liter Ecotec inline 4-cylinder motor with 140 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Customers can choose between 5-speed manual transmission and 4-speed automatic.
With gas prices seemingly always on the rise, shoppers will take interest in the 2005 Sunfire’s fuel ratings. Automatics get an estimated 23/32 mpg (city/highway), while manuals do slightly better with a consumption rate of 24/33 mpg (city/highway).
Antilock brakes and traction control are two of the available options.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
There are four new colors for 2005. Also new is a Sport Appearance Package for 1SB and 1SC models. It includes: 16-inch Chrome Tech wheels with bright chrome finish, 205/55R16 performance blackwall tires, sport suspension, a Sport interior package (leather-wrapped steering wheel, parking brake handle and shift knob, driver lumbar with manual adjust and passenger seatback pocket), dual exhaust outlets with chrome tips, body-color door handles and custom sill plates.
A three-point seatbelt is standard for the rear center position in all Sunfires. For more safety equipment, buyers can opt for a Protection Package, which features side airbags and the OnStar communications and security service.
