2005 Saturn Ion | Review | Buying Guide
There are quite a few changes to this year’s Saturn Ion. A versatile subcompact car available as a sedan and as a Quad Coupe, the Ion enters 2005 with a fresh new look for sedans, new automatic transmission and a host of other upgrades. Clearly, things are on the rise at Saturn.
The Quad Coupe has two rear-opening half doors behind the front doors that do not open or close independently of the fronts. These dual rear access doors are more than just a clever design feature; they are an industry first. Versatility is just one of the many adjectives that describe the Ion.
Saturn classifies its Ion models with a simple number system: 1, 2 and 3. In another improvement to the line, Saturn has given Ions new sound-reduction insulation for a smoother, quieter ride. In addition, the interiors have been retrimmed for a more refined look and feel.
Under the Hood
The sole powertrain is a 2.2-liter, Ecotec inline 4-cylinder engine with 140 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 145 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. It is mated to 5-speed manual transmission. 4-speed automatic transmission is also available for 2005.
Good fuel economy is one of the many selling points for the Ion line. Vehicles with manual transmission get 26/35 mpg (city/highway), while automatics get 25/33 mpg (city/highway).
Ion’s variable-ratio electric power steering allows customized steering assist for different tire/wheel combinations and suspension levels. For 2005, the electric power steering calibration has been adjusted, providing more responsive steering, especially when combined with the new, larger steering wheel.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Ions have rear drum brakes and offer optional ABS bundled with traction control. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are available for all as well. The base-trim Ion 1 sedan has 14-inch wheels, while midlevel 2s and top-line Ion 3s have 15- or 16-inch wheels.
At the top of the model line is the 3. It features such things as special sport suspension, cruise control, power mirrors and windows, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, automatic headlights and more.
There are many options as well, which can be added individually or in groups. Among the items are the OnStar system, a power sunroof, leather upholstery, a premium radio system and satellite radio.
