2005 Saturn Relay | Review | Buying Guide
Saturn enters the realm of the crossover vehicle in 2005 with the introduction of the all-new Relay, a model that it claims blends SUV-like exterior styling with the functionality of a midsize van. In other words, the Relay is big, roomy and quite rugged when it needs to be…or perfect for busy families with demanding driving schedules.
As all Saturns are, the Relay is practical and safe. Its interior is also quite flexible with its available configurations. Able to seat seven with all the seats in place, the Relay can also fold its 50/50-split third-row bench seat to create a level load floor when combined with an available rear storage bin.
Standard features for the new Relay include 4-wheel antilock disc brakes and a luxurious overhead DVD rear-passenger entertainment system with a 7-inch flip-down screen. But that’s not the only upscale piece of equipment that comes with the base package; also included is a standard CD/MP3 player with six speakers.
Under the Hood
The Relay is offered with a front-wheel drive configuration and as an all-wheel drive model. Your driving conditions will have to determine which model you choose, but rest assured that the AWD model can handle inclement weather.
Powering the new Relay model is a capable 3.5-liter V6 engine. It is able to pump out 200 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 298 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm.
To the V6 engine is mated a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, which provides smooth, seamless shifts. Electronic safeguards built into the transmission ensure trouble-free performance. When properly equipped, a Relay can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
All seven seating positions have three-point safety belts. Retractors for front seating positions have built-in load limiters that allow a controlled amount of give in the belt, which reduces the impact load on the chest. The StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system is optional with FWD models.
The Relay features a front overhead console and a standard overhead rail system. The rail system integrates the rear HVAC and audio controls, lighting and rear-seat entertainment system/DVD into a single unit.
There are more standards on the Relay 2 model, which is the uplevel trim, and there are quite a few options as well. There’s an available six-disc in-dash CD/MP3 player with XM Satellite Radio and a remote starter, among other things.
