2012 Ford Escape Highlights:

Ford has indicated that it will overhaul the Escape in 2013, but that doesn't mean the 2012 Escape isn't anything to get excited about. Although the compact crossover category has grown more crowded since the Escape effectively defined it, the 2012 Ford Escape shows that it is still a strong contender.

One category in which the 2012 Ford Escape leads the competition is in fuel efficiency -- this model provides 28 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg in the city, although upgrading to a hybrid version will bring those numbers up to 34 mpg and 31 mpg. The standard rig is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine capable of 170 horsepower, but a V6 channeling 240 horsepower is also available. And though it is more compact than other SUVs, the 2012 Ford Escape can haul up to 3,500 pounds.

Ford offers the 2012 Escape in all-wheel and front-wheel drive versions, and handling is assisted by stability control, anti-lock brakes and traction control. However, this Escape has less than impressive braking power and safety scores -- an overall 3 out of 5 star rating for rollover, side- and front-impact tests.

The 2012 Escape seats five, and the Bluetooth and media-playing Sync system is available on most trims. Possible upgrades include navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system, rearview camera and parallel parking assist. The 2012 Escape provides some features not matched by rivals, including a folding second row of seats for additional cargo space, but it no longer steamrolls its competition. Ford provides a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and starts at $21,440.

Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost of a New 2012 Ford Escape:

  • Example: Base dealer Invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of Options + Destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost. (Dealer Cost Example)
  • What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.

Total Dealer Cost (calculated above) + Taxes/Licensing Fees - Rebate/Incentive = True Cost (You can get the rebates, incentives & invoice options pricing at Edmunds.)
