Let’s see what separates the available trims.

Prices for the BMW 640i Gran Coupe start at $82,395. Even this trim packs a great deal of performance. Motivating the 640i Gran Coupe is a turbocharged, inline-six engine. It’s rated by BMW to develop a stout 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. An estimated 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds makes the 640i Gran Coupe a relatively quick performer. Every new 6-Series uses an eight-speed automatic transmission.

A traditional RWD system comes standard on the 640i Gran Coupe. However, you can opt for BMW’s xDrive AWD system. Sport-tuned adaptive suspension dampers help promote responsive handling. While RWD models are rated to return an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in town and 29 mpg on the highway, AWD model deliver 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

When it comes to exterior styling, the 640i Gran Coupe has an attractive look. Adaptive LED headlamps and LED fog lights come standard. BMW also equips the sedan with a sporty set of 18-inch wheels. As expected for a car in this price class, the BMW 640i Gran Coupe has a quite luxurious interior. Full leather upholstery comes standard. You’ll also enjoy the 10-way power front seats, which provide four-way power lumbar adjustment. Dual-zone automatic climate control is another standard creature comfort. Driver-seat memory settings and ambient lighting further highlight the 640i Gran Coupe’s list of standard equipment.

There’s also ample technology inside the 640i Gran Coupe. Featuring a 10.2-inch display screen with a touch-pad controller on the center console, BMW’s iDrive Infotainment system is a big highlight. It includes Apple CarPlay for easier iPhone integration. Navigation is also built into the iDrive interface. A Wi-Fi hot spot ensures easy access to the web. Some of the other notable standard features consist of a nine-speaker stereo system with satellite radio, a USB port, and a wireless charging pad.

Meanwhile, an auto-drying brake feature helps inspire confidence on rainy days. Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are also found on the 640i Gran Coupe.

As expected, the 640i Gran Coupe offers a long list of optional equipment. You’ll be able to outfit the sedan with two different safety packages. You can further enhance your safety by opting for the Driver Assistance Plus package, which adds full-speed automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.

If you spend a lot of time in crowded areas, consider getting the optional Parking Assistance package. The combination of a 360-degree camera and an automatic parking system helps make the task of maneuvering in tight spots a bit easier.

There are plenty of ways to enhance the luxuriousness of the 640i Gran Coupe. The Executive package definitely makes the sedan feel more upscale by adding soft-close doors and climate-controlled seats with massage functions. Four-zone climate control further enhances passenger comfort. Meanwhile, a Harman Kardon premium audio system improves the sound of your music. Upgraded interior trim also comes in the Executive package.

For drivers seeking a more powerful look, BMW offers the M Sport appearance package. It decks out the 640i Gran Coupe with a special body kit. You can choose from either 19- or 20-inch performance wheels. A few racy interior upgrades also come in the M Sport package, including a performance steering wheel and simulated-suede headliner.

If you still aren’t satisfied, you can equip the 640i Gran Coupe with some stand-alone options. The available Adaptive Drive stabilizer bars and rear-wheel steering system help enhance handling. Meanwhile, a night vision camera helps you to detect road hazards after dark. You can also get the 640i Gran Coupe with an even more powerful, 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system.

Although the 650i Gran Coupe may not look drastically different from the 640i Gran Coupe, it does come standard with a larger set of 19-inch alloy wheels. Prices for this trim start at a steep $81,500 before checking any options.

The biggest difference is found under the hood. BMW equips the 650i trim with a stronger turbocharged V8 engine, which generates 445 horsepower and 485 horsepower. This more potent trim clocks a lower 0-60 time of 5.1 seconds. Fuel economy also drops to 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Aside from packing more performance, the 650i Gran Coupe comes standard with some of the 640i Gran Coupe’s options. All of the other equipment remains optional, including the available safety technologies.

Compare the 2019 6-Series 650i Gran Coupe vs 640i Gran Turismo Trims. What is the difference?

There’s a key difference between the 6-Series Gran Coupe and 6-Series Grand Turismo. A hatchback design sets apart the 6-Series Gran Turismo, which has a starting MSRP of $70,300. This means you enjoy a bit more cargo space in the back.

Unlike the 6-Series Gran Coupe, the 6-Series Grand Turismo is only available with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Total output stands at 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive also comes standard. A rear air suspension is also exclusive to the newly available Grand Turismo model. In regard to fuel economy, expect to get 20 mpg in city traffic and 28 mpg on the open road.

The 6-Series Gran Turismo comes standard with a similar list of features. You’ll receive the same iDrive infotainment system. However, BMW equips this model with a 12-speaker stereo system opposed to a nine-speaker unit. A panoramic sunroof replaces the Gran Coupe’s tilt-only sunroof.

In comparison to the 6-Series Gran Coupe, the 640i Gran Turismo model comes standard with a greater number of advanced safety technologies. You’ll enjoy blind-spot detection, low-speed automatic braking, and lane departure warning. All of the other available driver-assist features are optional.

Not available on the Gran Coupe, a rear entertainment system enables the Gran Turismo to provide a more exciting ride for folks sitting in the back. It includes dual screens, which allows movie watching and video game play.

You can also elevate the hatchback’s curb appeal with an M Sport appearance package. Meanwhile, a Dynamic Handling package enhances the Grand Turismo’s ability to take corners.

Which Trim Level to Choose?

The base 2019 BMW 6-Series 640i Gran Coupe is a fine choice. Its twin-turbo inline-six engine feels very stout during normal driving situations. You will also enjoy plenty of nice standard features, including BMW’s iDrive touch-screen interface and a Wi-Fi hot spot. If you need all-wheel drive, prepare to pay an extra $3,000

Of the options available for the 640i Gran Coupe, the Driver Assistance package is the most beneficial. The various safety technologies promise to give you more confidence on today's dangerous roadways. You may also be interested in the M Sport package, which gives the sedan a meaner look.

Drivers seeking the most power will ultimately choose the 650i Gran Coupe. Its twin-turbo V8 engine is the biggest attraction. Optional equipment, like the 640i’s available Harman Kardon sound system and upgraded seating, also come standard on the 650i version. Remember, you can save nearly $12,000 by choosing the less expensive 640i Gran Coupe.

If you need the practicality of a hatchback, go for the 640i Grand Turismo model. It’s actually more affordable than the Gran Coupe body style. You’ll also enjoy more standard driver-assist safety technologies. Most importantly for drivers living in cold-weather states, the 6-Series Grand Turismo benefits from a standard xDrive AWD system for improved traction on slippery streets.

Like the sedan, the 640i Grand Turismo offers several high-end upgrades and a stylish M Sport package. At the end of the day, you must decide whether you prefer the sleek and athletic profile of the Gran Coupe or the extra cargo space provided by the 640i Grand Turismo.

Key Features of the 2019 BMW 6-Series

All versions of the 2019 BMW 6-Series come equipped with an excellent iDrive infotainment system. A useful controller knob makes the interface easier to operate for drivers. While Apple CarPlay is included, you must pay a subscription fee. Android Auto is not offered on any trim.

Even the base engine delivers enough performance to make your everyday commute entertaining. However, upgrading to the V8 engine gives the 6-Series a more aggressive feel. Highway fuel economy also isn’t bad with the available V8 engine. Both engines require the use of premium gasoline.

If you don’t want to add any pricey options, the base stereo system should meet your expectations. On the other hand, expect the mid-level Harmon Kardon unit to sound better at high volumes. Atop the range sits the booming 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system. It rivals the sound quality of the Grand Turismo model's optional Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system.
