The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-sized SUV with room for seven or eight people, depending on the specific model. It also offers a total of 122.9 cubic-feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. The Tahoe has a comfortable interior with three rows of seats. There's plenty of convenience features, safety equipment and driver-assist tech in this SUV. The Tahoe also offers a surprisingly high towing capacity of 8,400 pounds.

The 2022 Ford Expedition is also a large SUV with room for seven or eight people. It has a maximum storage capacity of 104.6 cubic-feet behind the front row of seats. The Expedition is quick and can tow even more than the Chevy. It offers a maximum tow rating of 9,300 pounds. The Expedition comes equipped with plenty of standard features, including some impressive entertainment and tech features.

It's no secret that Chevrolet and Ford have a long-standing rivalry. The two American automakers are fierce competitors, often producing vehicles as a direct challenge to a vehicle made by the other company. Ford's Expedition and Chevy's Tahoe are two such vehicles that are directly competing for the same market. Here's a closer look at how these two SUVs compare with each other.

The Powertrain

Chevrolet's latest Tahoe has three available engines. There are two powerful gasoline-powered V8 engines. There's also an available Duramax Turbo-Diesel I6. The 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 makes 355 horsepower, while the 6.2-liter V8 makes 420 horsepower. The diesel engine cranks out 277 horsepower with 460 pound-feet of torque.

The diesel engine offers the best fuel efficiency of the three. The EPA estimates that both V8 engines should get around 16 miles-per-gallon. The diesel can get up to 24 miles-per-gallon in combined driving in the city and on the highway. No matter which engine the Tahoe is equipped with, it will have an automatic 10-speed transmission.

The Ford Expedition only has one engine choice, but it also comes in two supped-up versions with more power than the base model. The engine is a 3,5-liter EcoBoost V6 with dual turbochargers. This makes 380 horsepower with 470 pound-feet of torque. On Limited models, the engine is fine-tuned to produce 400 horsepower. For the Timberline trim, this gets boosted again to 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.

The Expedition gets a 10-speed automatic SlectShift transmission. With its optimal setup, it has a combined fuel-economy rating of 19 miles-per-gallon. This is slightly better than the gasoline-powered Tahoe, but less than what the Tahoe offers from its diesel engine. Both the Ford and the Chevy come in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variations. Both have anti-lock disc brakes that provide smooth stopping power for these large vehicles.

Ford's Expedition beats out the Chevrolet Tahoe when it comes to pure power and torque. It accelerates a lot quicker and can tow more weight. It even offers better fuel efficiency when only comparing gasoline engines. The Tahoe offers a diesel option, something the Expedition doesn't have at all.


The Chevrolet Tahoe has adequate acceleration and refined road manners. The suspension system provides a smooth ride. The brakes are firm yet smooth. Chevy's sound-proofing is exceptional. Little engine or road noise can be heard inside of the Tahoe, even at highway speeds.

The Tahoe has accurate steering and can take a sharp turn as well as any large vehicle. It can even handle light off-road duties too. The seats are extremely comfortable, especially up front in models equipped with bucket seats.

The Ford Expedition has much better acceleration and exceptional steering and handling. It provides a smooth ride, though the Tahoe does a slightly better job of soaking up every bump in the road. The Expedition's braking power and smoothness is equivalent to what the Tahoe offers.

The Expedition has a quiet interior, though perhaps not as quiet as the Tahoe. Both SUVs have attractive, well-designed interiors. Both are about equally comfortable. The Ford has a bit more of a premium feel on the inside. It fairs a bit better when driving over off-road terrain too.

The Tahoe offers 8-way power seats up front with 2-way power lumbar support. The Expedition has an 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar support. The Expedition also has a 60/40/60 third row with power-folding, power-reclining and power-folding headrests. The second row is a 40/20/40 bench with a fold-flat feature. The Chevrolet's 2nd and 3rd rows can be folded down flat as well.

Both vehicles have available heating and ventilation for the front seats. Ford offers cloth, ActiveX™ and leather upholstery. Chevy offers cloth, leather-trimmed or full-leather upholstery. Both vehicles have power locks and windows. The Expedition has Tri-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control while the Tahoe offers Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control.

The Tahoe and Explorer both have ample room for the passengers to stretch out in. There's plenty of headroom and legroom at all three rows for both vehicles. Part of the driving experience also includes entertainment features, and both of these SUVs have top-notch, modern infotainment systems.

Ford's stock infotainment system for the Expedition has an AM/FM stereo with MP3 capabilities. Bluetooth Technology is available for audio streaming. Speaking of the audio, the default setup comes with six speakers. A WiFi hotspot is available to keep everyone connected. There's also Smart USB ports and available wireless charging.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work with all levels of the Ford SYNC Infotainment system. Built-in navigation is available. The system will have a 12-inch or 15.5-inch display depending on the trim level. Music lovers can also upgrade the audio to a B&O® Unleashed Sound System by Bang & Olufsen, complete with 22 speakers and a subwoofer.

The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system and upgraded Infotainment 3 Premium System are easier and more intuitive to use when compared to Ford's SYNC systems. They do come with a smaller, 10.2-inch touchscreen display, however. Bluetooth, WiFi and compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all here, just like in the Ford Expedition.

The Tahoe also has Voice-Recognition Technology for hands-free phone calls and hands-free use of some of the system's functions. Rear entertainment screens can be added for the second and third row. Ford has a similar rear-entertainment setup for the Expedition. The Tahoe has an available, integrated navigation system like the Expedition. Both have compatibility with SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

Chevrolet's Tahoe has a Bose® 10-speaker surround-sound system with CenterPoint® audio technology. The sound is amazing and there's plenty of volume, though perhaps not as much as what the Ford Expedition offers with its B&O® Unleashed Sound System. However, keep in mind that the Ford upgraded audio system is only available on higher trim levels or as an option.

Overall, both vehicles have strong points when it comes to the drivability and ride quality. The infotainment systems and tech are similar, though Ford wins in the audio department when moving up to a higher trim level. Both vehicles offer good handling and a smooth, quiet and comfortable ride.


Chevrolet's Tahoe has six airbags in models with a front bench seat. Models with bucket seats get seven airbags. This includes front and side-impact bags for the driver and front passenger. Head-curtain airbags provide protection for passengers in every row. The Tahoe has a Sensing System to detect when the passenger airbags are needed and an indicator light to let you know when the airbags are turned on or off.

Chevrolet offers a lot of standard safety features and tech. Every model gets StabiliTrak, Chevy's stability technology that also includes a Traction-Control System. There's also GM's Teen Driver Technology. This system lets the owner turn vehicle features on and off and then save these settings to a key fob. It also provides feedback so that owners can monitor a teen driver's habits while behind the wheel.

Every Tahoe has a tire-pressure monitor to make sure all four tires are inflated to a safe level. There's a rear-view camera with a washer to ensure the driver always has a clear view of what's behind them. All models of the Tahoe get Automatic Emergency Braking and Front Pedestrian Braking. There's a LATCH system for securing child safety seats. All Tahoe models get LED daytime-running lamps to make them more visible to oncoming traffic.

Some more standard driver-assist features include Forward-Collision Alert, Hill-Start Assist and a Following-Distance Indicator. Every Tahoe is compatible with OnStar® & Chevrolet Connected Services. Some of the optional safety features include Rear Pedestrian Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and a Lane-Keep Assist feature with Lane-Departure Warning.

The 2022 Ford Expedition also has a fair amount of standard safety features. There's a similar airbag system on all models. This comes with front and side-impact bags for the driver and front passenger. There's also Ford's Safety Canopy System to protect passengers in the third row. There's an SOS Post-Crash Alert System™ that's similar to Chevrolet's Connected Services.

The Expedition gets the same LATCH system as the Tahoe. Other similar features include a rear-view camera, child safety locks in the rear and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Both SUVs have anti-lock disc brakes for all four wheels. Ford has its own sophisticated Traction-Control System and Electronic Stability Control too, similar to what Chevy offers.

Every Expedition gets Ford Co-Pilot360™ Technology. This is a complete set of driver-assist features and technology to keep everyone safe. While the package is standard across the board, the higher trim levels get a number of additional features. There's Auto Start/Stop tech for better fuel efficiency. Stock features include Hill-Start Assist, Pre-Collision Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking.

Lane-Keeping Assist and Lane-Keeping Alert come standard on the Expedition, while being optional or available on higher trim levels for the Tahoe. The Ford also has a Blind-Spot Info System and Reverse Sensing System. Some possible upgrades include a Trailer Backup Assist, a 360-degree camera and Trailer Reverse Guidance.

Both vehicles are safe and reliable with plenty of standard features in this category. The Chevrolet may have a few more features here when compared to the Ford. The Ford Expedition, however, offers a few more standard features at the base trim level. Ford's Lane-Keeping features are a big perk to have on every model. The Chevrolet's Teen-Driver System may make the Tahoe more appealing to owners with a younger, secondary driver at home.

Which Has the Best Value?

The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe has a starting MSRP of $50,500. The highest trim level, called the High Country, starts out at $73,825. This can get significantly higher with optional features and additional packages. The 2022 Ford Expedition starts at $52,620 with its highest trim, the Platinum Max, coming in at $80,805.

The Ford Expedition is more expensive at almost every comparable trim level. It does offer more horsepower and torque, but the buyer will have to go up a few trim levels to reach the maximum performance stats. Keep in mind that the Tahoe still has plenty of power to suit the needs of most buyers. Unless one plans to get a diesel-powered Tahoe, the Expedition will save them a bit of money on fuel over time.

The Tahoe comes with more cargo space at a lower cost. Both vehicles have comparable safety features and driver-assist technology. The Ford interior feels a bit more upscale, but not by too much. The Chevy arguably has the better infotainment system while Ford has the better audio setup, though only at the highest trim levels. Both have comfortable seats and a similar number of convenience features at each comparable trim level.

when it comes to value, it's almost a draw between these two SUVs. The Ford costs more but provides stronger performance and more-powerful towing capabilities. If pure power isn't a top priority, the Chevy may be a better bargain with its lower cost and superior tech and entertainment features. It also offers significantly more cargo space, making it more practical for some buyers.

Which is Better?

The Ford versus Chevy rivalry is real. Both automakers have loyal fan bases that will no doubt want to see their brand win this competition. If you fall into that category, you might be disappointed with our conclusion. There really is no clear-cut winner here when comparing the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe to the 2022 Ford Expedition. Which is better will largely depend on the buyer's specific needs and particular tastes.

Both SUVs are attractive vehicles with plenty of passenger and cargo room. Chevy wins if cargo space is your ultimate goal. If power, acceleration and towing are more important, then choose the Ford. Both vehicles will provide plenty of convenience features and luxury appointments. Both have impressive infotainment systems and driver-assist technology.

The Tahoe and Expedition are both safe, comfortable vehicles to ride around in. Overall, the Ford probably wins in more categories, but the Chevrolet is also cheaper with more storage space in back. This will make it the better bargain for many buyers.
