The Ford Bronco was an iconic SUV produced from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. After a long hiatus, Ford brought the name back in 2021. This time, there would be two models of the Bronco. There's a full-sized model that's more akin to the 90s Broncos. There's also a compact SUV called the Bronco Sport.

The 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is an athletic little SUV with impressive off-road capabilities. Every model comes equipped with a 4X4 drivetrain. This compact SUV also provides a smooth and quiet ride while on paved roads. The Bronco Sport has a rugged build with an appearance to match.

Ford's Bronco Sport will be available in four different trim levels for 2022. All are quite capable and even practical vehicles to own. They have decent fuel-economy numbers for their class. They also provide a good amount of cargo space. Here is an overview of the four trim levels and how they compare to one another.


Compare the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport Base vs Big Bend Trim Levels. What Is the Difference?

The first trim level of the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is called the Base. While the name won't win any awards for originality, it's a well-equipped model. The Base trim level offers great value. Every model of the Bronco Sport has seating for up to five people. There's 65.2 cubic-feet of cargo space with even more on top thanks to some roof rails.

The second trim level up, when comparing by price, is called the Big Bend. Both of these models have a 4X4 drivetrain. Both come equipped with the same engine too. They're powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder that produces 181 horsepower. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The base engine has Start/Stop technology for efficiency. According to EPA estimates, this powertrain should get around 25 miles-per-gallon (mpg) in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Both of these trims get Electronic Traction Control as part of Ford's Co-Pilot360 Technology. Electric Power-Assisted Steering is standard. Both models also get 4-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock brake system (ABS).

These two different versions of the Bronco Sport get 17-inch wheels. The Base wheels come painted in a Sparkle Silver color. The Big Bend has high-gloss aluminum wheels painted in a Carbonized Gray tone. A set of 18-inch wheels is optional for the Big Bend. The Big Bend also has the option of being equipped with all-terrain tires.

These models have a neat safari-style roof that expands the cargo space even further. The roof was designed to accommodate up to 150 pounds of additional cargo. With the available bike rack, two bicycles can fit on the roof while standing. There are also roof-rack side rails. There's a manual liftgate with flip-up glass for the rear window.

The flip-up glass feature adds even greater accessibility. Both of these trims come with dual floodlights, which is a great feature for an off-road vehicle to have. Both models get daytime-running lamps. The Big Bend can have LED fog lamps added on as an option. The Big Bend also gets the option to add crossbars to the roof rails.

The exterior mirrors are power-adjustable, though they need to be folded in manually. The Big Bend can have heated mirrors for easy defrosting in the winter. The Base has a Carbon Black grille with the Bronco name displayed in black lettering. The Big Bend has a Carbonized Gray grille with the Bronco name in white.

On the inside, the Base gets cloth seating while the Big Bend has a unique easy-to-clean upholstery. There's a 6-way manual driver's seat and 4-way manual passenger's seat up front for the Base. The Big Bend gets an available 8-way power driver's seat and heated seats up front. Both models have a 60/40 Split-Fold-Flat configuration in the back.

Power windows and door locks are standard. The Big Bend gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel with access to some controls right on the wheel. The Big Bend also gets some extra cup holders and small-item storage spaces. Both have Ford's Terrain Management System with five different modes for optimum performance in different driving conditions.

The Big Bend gets an extra MOLLE system to make cargo hauling even easier. There's a 12V outlet as well as type-A and type-C USB ports. The Big Bend gets a few extra USB ports. The Base has basic heating and A/C from a single-zone system. The Big Bend offers Electronic Automatic Temperature Control with a rear air duct for the backseat passengers.

Both of these models of the Ford Bronco Sport have the same audio setup. There's an AM/FM stereo with six speakers. They also get Ford's SYNC3 Infotainment System with Enhanced Voice Recognition Technology. This makes it easy to operate the system through voice commands. The system can also be used to make hands-free phone calls with a compatible smartphone.

SYNC3 comes with an 8-inch touchscreen with swipe capabilities. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps are compatible with the system. With FordPass Connect, the system can also provide a 4G WiFi hotspot. The Big Bend trim even gets a navigation system that can be accessed with voice commands. Moving up to the Big Bend trim also gives access to SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio and Traffic with Travel Link.

Both trim levels get the same amount of airbags as part of Ford's Personal Safety System. There are dual-stage airbags up front, as well as side-impact bags. There are airbags to protect the driver's knees. Ford's Safety Canopy side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors provide another level of protection up front and in the rear.

All trim levels get the LATCH system for tethering child safety seats into the back passenger area. There's a Tire-Pressure Monitor for making sure that the tires are inflated to a safe level. The aforementioned Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology features a Post-Crash Alert System. It also provides Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, a Lane-Keeping System and Blind-Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert.

The Base and Big Bend trim levels also offer LED headlights, LED taillights and an anti-theft alarm system with a perimeter alarm. The Base model gets Remote Keyless Entry that's attached to a key FOB. The Big Bend comes with Ford's SecuriCode Keyless-Entry Keypad.

Compare the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend vs Outer Banks Trims. What Is the Difference?

After the Big Bend, the next trim level is called the Outer Banks. This model shares the same engine, drivetrain, transmission system and brakes as the previous two trim levels. It's basically the same when it comes to the mechanical features. The steering, handling, fuel economy and performance stats are all the same here.

The Outer Banks comes sporting a set of 18-inch machined-faced aluminum wheels with an Ebony Black paint scheme. There's now a Shadow Black roof to add some contrast to the body color. The door handles now match the body color of the Bronco Sport. A bottle opener located in the hatch is convenient for tailgate parties and camping trips.

The Outer Banks comes with LED signature lighting and automatically gets the LED fog lamps. The front grille is a sleek black with bold white lettering for the Bronco emblem. This new trim level gets rain-sensing wipers up front and a rear intermittent wiper in back with a de-icer.

On the inside, the Outer Banks gets upgraded seating. This model automatically gets an 8-way power driver's seat and a 6-way power seat for the front passengers. Up front there are now bucket seats with leather-trimmed upholstery. The steering wheel gets an even finer leather covering and now offers heating and controls for the audio system.

The Outer Banks gets the option for a wireless charging pad. The audio system can up swapped out for a B&O© Sound System by Bang & Olufsen with 10 speakers and a subwoofer. This model also gets Dual-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control to keep multiple passengers comfortable and happy.

The interior of the Outer Banks gets even more small-item storage spaces. There are even more USB ports than before. There's also some nicer ambient lighting. Things get more upscale in general with some higher quality materials. The safety features, security alarm and driver-assist technology is the same when comparing these two trim levels.

Compare the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport Outer Banks vs Badlands. What Is the Difference?

The fourth and final trim level for the Ford Bronco Sport is called the Badlands. This trim level, for the most part, has all of the best features offered from the previous trim level and then some. It also gets a performance upgrade from a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. This motor produces an impressive 250 horsepower with 277 pound-feet of torque.

The Badlands still gets an 8-speed automatic transmission. There's a new upgraded off-road suspension here. This includes a new advanced 4X4 system with a Twin-Clutch Rear-Drive Unit. There's also a new Trail Control feature that works a lot like cruise control but for off-road driving. During specific modes like Rock Crawl Mode and Mud/Rut Mode, the Trail Control uses the 180-Degree Camera for added visibility.

Metal brash plates give some added protection to the underbody of the Badlands. There are also front tow hooks to help get the vehicle out of ruts. The exterior features are largely the same here, with the exception of the trim colors and trim-level badges.

On the inside, the Badlands automatically gets the upgraded, premium audio system. It gets the top-tier Temperature Control System. The instrument cluster is 6.5-inches, which is larger than the 4.2-inch cluster for the first two trim levels. Rubberized flooring, seat backs and cargo flooring makes for an easier cleanup after some off-road fun.

The amount of interior storage gets boosted yet again with the Badlands trim level. This time around there's even an under-seat storage area for the passenger's side. All of the power windows now have one-touch operation for both up and down. The upholstery gets upgraded to perforated leather trim for the front bucket seats.

The infotainment system remains basically the same here. The navigation system is added on automatically with the Badlands trim level. There are now 110V/400W AC outlets behind the center console and cargo area. This trim level comes with a full-sized spare wheel and tire. This can certainly come in handy while off-roading or on the highway.

In addition to the Rear-View Camera that's found on every model of the Bronco Sport, the Badlands also gets a 180-Degree Camera with Split-View. This camera even has a washer to keep the view unobstructed. This is another thoughtful addition for a vehicle that was designed with off-road performance in mind.

The rest of the safety features and driver-assist technology is basically the same here. The Badlands does get some extra sensors to assist with rear parking. It also gets Ford's AdvanceTrac system with Roll-Stability Control. This is yet another extra feature that will be useful for drivers taking on some serious off-road terrain.

Which Trim to Choose?

The 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is a fun vehicle to drive and to own. Its off-road prowess really sets it apart from the competition in its class. If off-road fun is a prime consideration, then buyers should go right for the top-tier trim level. The Badlands also has the more powerful engine for better acceleration and overall performance.

If off-road adventures won't be too frequent, then the Outer Banks may be the best choice. It will save the buyer some money while still providing many of the best features that the Bronco Sport has to offer. It's also no slouch when it comes to off-road performance and will hold up just fine for occasional off-road fun.
