2022 Expedition vs Yukon - How Do They Stack Up? Which is Better?

The 2022 Ford Expedition is a large SUV with seating for up to eight people. This full-sized SUV measures in at 210-inches long, 80-inches wide and 77-inches high. There's a total of 20.9 cubic-feet of cargo space with a full load of passengers. With less people along for the ride, the seats can be configured to provide 104.6 cubic-feet of storage space.

The full-sized SUV market has no shortage of great options in a wide range of prices. One of the Ford Expedition's top competitors for 2022 will be the GMC Yukon. The Yukon has an almost identical size, coming in at just 1-inch wider than the Expedition. It can seat seven or eight and has a cargo capacity of 25.5 cubic-feet with all of the seats in use. This can be expanded up to 122.9 cubic-feet with the rear seats folded down.

Somehow, the engineers at GMC have managed to cram a lot more cargo space into the same basic dimensions as the Ford. The Ford Expedition, however, has a lower starting price when compared to the GMC Yukon. But is this enough to make it the superior SUV? Here's a look at how these two vehicles compare in a number of other important categories.

The Powertrain

Large, heavy vehicles need a strong powertrain for adequate performance. After all, carrying heavy loads of people and cargo is what they're built for. Fortunately, both the Ford Expedition and the GMC Yukon offer strong engines and excellent mechanical features.

The latest Ford Expedition only has one engine choice, but there are different versions of this same engine. The base model is a 3.6-liter V6 with twin turbochargers. This engine produces 380 horsepower (hp) with 470 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque. The power gets boosted up to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque for the Limited and Timberline trim levels. Adding Ford's Stealth Package to a Limited model upgrades the power again to 440 hp with 510 lb-ft of torque.

Every version of the 2022 Expedition gets a 10-speed automatic transmission. The wide ratio span and perfect gear spacing makes for responsiveness and great performance, especially during acceleration. Every model of the Expedition has four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-locking brake system (ABS). Most models come in two-wheel drive (2WD) and 4X4, all-wheel drive (AWD) variations. Ford offers a couple of different 4X4 systems here, like Intelligent 4WD with a Terrain-Management System.

The Expedition has a multi-link, independent rear suspension with stabilizer bars up front and in the rear. This SUV also has some advanced systems like Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control and Electronic, Power-Assisted, Rack-and-Pinion Steering. With the right setup, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds. The 2WD models get around 17 miles-per-gallon (mpg) in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. AWD models are slightly less efficient.

The GMC Yukon, unlike the Ford Expedition, offers multiple engine choices. There's a 5.3-liter V8 engine for the SLE, SLT and AT4 models. This motor produces 355 hp with 383 lb-ft of torque. There's also a 6.2-liter V8 that's optional for the AT4 and standard for the top trim level, which GMC calls the Denali. This bigger V8 makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

GMC also offers a diesel model of their Yukon, which is something that Ford doesn't offer at all for the Expedition. This is a 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel that produces 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Like the Ford, The GMC Yukon comes in 2WD and AWD configurations. The most fuel-efficient setup is a 2WD Yukon with the 5.3-liter V8 engine. This combination has a fuel-economy rating of 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

All models of the Yukon have a 10-speed automatic transmission. Just like the Expedition, there are four-wheel disc brakes with ABS here. The front suspension has a coil-over-shock setup while the rear gets a multi-link suspension with coil springs. The Yukon also gets GMC's StabiliTrack technology which includes Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control. Magnetic Ride Control and a Premium Smooth-Ride Suspension are available for the higher trim levels.

When comparing the powertrains of the 2022 Ford Expedition and the 2022 GMC Yukon, there are a lot of similarities. The main difference is that the Yukon has more options, including an available diesel engine. Both offer similar power and torque ratings, though performance is overall better from the GMC Yukon's V8 engines. The Ford Expedition offers better fuel-economy numbers, but not by a significant amount.


With all of its horsepower, the Ford Expedition should be quick enough to satisfy most buyers looking for a large SUV. The GMC Yukon takes a bit longer to get to 60 miles-per-hour (mph), but it's not a huge difference. Once they both get going, the Yukon's power can be felt more. It has more passing power and doesn't get as bogged down as the Expedition does when there's a full load of people and cargo.

Both SUVs have solid brakes with smooth and adequate stopping power. Their automatic transmissions shift smoothly and accurately. The Yukon has better steering and handling, but that's not to say that the Expedition is bad in this category. Neither vehicle is built for taking tight curves, but they both have accurate, responsive steering. The Yukon feels more nimble overall.

The Expedition and Yukon both provide a smooth, quiet ride. The Yukon wins again here, though, when equipped with either Magnetic Ride Control or GMC's Premium Smooth-Ride Suspension. Both have comparable traction-control and stability systems. Both vehicles have decent off-road capabilities, but the Yukon is better overall once the vehicles leave paved roads.

The Ford Expedition has comfortable and supportive seats for every row. Leather trim is available, along with 8-way power adjustments and lumbar support up front. Heating and ventilation are available for the seats as well. The Expedition has a Tri-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature-Control System and a Particulate Filter for the cabin.

The GMC Yukon has 10-way or 12-way power seats for the driver and front passenger. Heating, ventilation, lumbar support and leather upholstery are all available. Both SUVs have attractive, well-designed interiors with plenty of small-item storage spaces. Both have stylish and modern gauge clusters that are well laid out for easy viewing.

The Yukon has Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control that's on par with the Expedition's system. Both vehicles offer excellent audio and entertainment features. The Yukon has an available 14-speaker system with Surround-Sound by Bose. The infotainment system has a 10.2-inch screen and an available navigation system. The infotainment system also has wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Yukon offers wireless charging for smartphones, as well as a number of USB ports both up front and for the rear passengers. Bluetooth is available for music streaming. Voice-Recognition Technology is available here as well. The Yukon also has an available WiFi hot-spot.

The Ford Expedition has an available sound system by Bang and Olufsen. The system has an AM/FM stereo, 22 speakers and a subwoofer for amazing bass sounds. The infotainment system for the Ford has a lot of the same features as the GMC system. The Expedition has Bluetooth Tech, hands-free calling and a navigation system. There's once again wireless compatibility with Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a WiFi hot-spot.

Steering and handling is better in the Yukon. It also offers a more comfortable ride quality. The Ford, however, has a better infotainment system and audio setup. For some buyers, the better entertainment and multimedia features will make for a more enjoyable driving experience. The Expedition and Yukon both have comfortable seats and plenty of comfort-and-convenience features.


Safety may be the most important thing to consider when purchasing a new vehicle. This is especially true when buying a large SUV that will be used to transport your family and friends around. Both the Ford Expedition and the GMC Yukon have a good amount of standard safety features. They're also both equipped with a lot of modern technology and driver-assist features to keep everyone safe.

The Ford Expedition has dual-stage front airbags, side-impact airbags and Ford's Safety Canopy. The canopy adds a level of protection for passengers in all three rows. The aforementioned stability and traction-control systems make for a safer ride. The ABS brakes should be noted again here as well. The Expedition has child safety locks, child safety windows and the LATCH system for securing child safety seats.

Every Expedition gets a Tire-Pressure Monitor, a Rear-View Camera and Ford's Reverse Sensing System. Every trim level comes with Ford's Co-Pilot360™ Technology. This is a number of driver-assist features for both convenience and safety. The higher trim levels get a few extras from the Co-Pilot360 system.

Co-Pilot360 provides AdvanceTrac™ and RSC Roll-Stability Control. Ford's BLIS system monitors potential blind-spots. There are advanced sensors in the front and rear of the vehicle. The Expedition also has Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking. The available Active Park-Assist 2.0 System helps with all forms of parking, including parallel parking.

The Expedition has a Lane-Keeping System. A separate Lane-Centering Assist works in tandem with the system to keep the Expedition safely in its proper lane. Adaptive Cruise Control makes sure the SUV stays the proper distance from the vehicle that's ahead of it. Finally, the Expedition also offers Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control features.

The GMC Yukon has seven airbags in models with front bucket seats. Those with a front bench seat get six airbags. Like the Expedition, the Yukon has child safety seats and locks, as well as the LATCH system. It also has an HD Rear Camera, a Tire-Pressure Monitor and Hill Descent Control. Every model comes ready for OnStar® and GMC Connected Services.

Like the Ford, this GMC has systems to keep the vehicle in its own lane. This includes Lane-Keep Assist, Lane-Change Alert and a Lane-Departure Warning. There are also sensors to monitor blind-spots and rear cross-traffic. A set of LED daytime-running lamps makes the Yukon more visible to other vehicles.

Forward-Collision Alert warns of an impending crash, while the Front Pedestrian Braking detects people and other objects and applies the brakes as needed. The Yukon offers Front and Rear Park Assist. While these are great, they're not quite on par with Ford's advanced Parking-Assist System. The Yukon also has Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking.

The GMC Teen Driver System let's parents and guardians set some guidelines for younger, inexperienced drivers. This system allows the owner of a Yukon to enable and disable certain vehicle features. These can then be attached to a key FOB so that they apply automatically when the younger driver gets behind the wheel. The Teen Driver System also provides a report on the driver's habits so that parents can provide some feedback and coaching.

Which Has the Best Value?

The 2022 Ford Expedition starts out at $52,620 for the XL STX trim. The highest trim level, the Platinum Max, has a starting price of $80,805. The 2022 GMC Yukon starts out at $55,795 for the base model. A Denali model with 4WD starts out at $76,895. The prices can go up quickly for either SUV once packages and options are added on.

The Ford has the lowest base price, but the higher price when comparing the top trim levels. It also has the most horsepower for the money, though most of the Yukon models perform better overall. The Ford may save owners money on fuel over time, but not enough to matter very much. The Yukon offers more standard features. This includes both convenience features and safety features.

The 2022 GMC Yukon has far more options at every trim level. It also gives the buyer more choices when it comes to the powertrain. Deciding which has the best value isn't so cut-and-dry here. The prices are similar, but at the highest trim levels, the Yukon offers the best value. For some buyers, however, a lower trim level of the Expedition may just have the right combination of price and features to suit them.

Which Is Better?

When it comes to performance, the Yukon fares better, though it's a close call. The Yukon has significantly more cargo space and also does better during off-road driving, if that's something you're looking to do with your full-sized SUV. The Yukon even has better steering and handling.

Once inside of the vehicles, things start evening out a bit. They're both extremely comfortable with a lot of nice features. The Ford probably has the superior sound system and infotainment system. The Yukon is a bit more upscale and better designed overall. At the higher trim levels, the Yukon provides a much more comfortable ride.

In almost every way, the GMC Yukon beats out the Ford Expedition. It also has a cheaper top trim level, so if you plan to go for the best with all of the bells and whistles, the Yukon is a great bargain. It's going to be the best choice for the most buyers.
