The Ford Maverick is a brand new vehicle for the 2022 model year. It's the smallest truck in the company's lineup. Ford is hoping that the Maverick will appeal to adventure-minded customers who don't feel the need to drive something that's too large.
The Maverick has a youthful spirit that goes along with its name, and what's most intriguing about it is that it comes standard with a hybrid powertrain. The standard engine has a displacement of 2.5 liters, and when combined with the electric motor, total horsepower is 191. Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds, and trucks with this type of hybrid equipment use continuously variable automatic transmissions.
If someone decides that he/she wants more power, there's the option to get a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine instead. It would increase horsepower to 250, and it would come with 277 torque. This 2.0-liter engine is available with all-wheel drive, while the 2.5-liter engine can only be paired with front-wheel drive. With the 2.0-liter engine and an optional towing package, towing capacity is bumped up to 4,000 pounds.
Obviously, the EcoBoost engine is going to be the one to pick if capability is of prime importance. However, people also have to take efficiency into consideration. When taking city and highway driving into account, the EcoBoost can earn about 25 or 26 miles per gallon. In contrast, the hybrid versions of this Ford truck can earn about 37 miles per gallon. Ford gives only one option for the size of the cabin and the bed, so there's no opportunity to customize the configuration. The XL and XLT both have seating for five, with there being about 36 inches of leg room. Note that when the truck has the non-hybrid powertrain, it provides about one more inch of rear-seat leg room. Whether this is important, or even noticeable, would be up to buyers to decide.
Many will find the under-seat storage bins in the back to be convenient. It's a clever way to maximize storage options. Of course, the bed itself can be used to hold a variety of items. The bed measures about four and a half feet long. It can come with a FLEXBED system that helps people stay organized. Tie downs, optional storage cubbies, and outlets can be useful. The XL has six cargo tie-downs while the XLT has ten of them.
On the outside of the XL and XLT, there are a few minor differences. The handles and mirrors on the XL are black, and so is the grille. It's a black mesh grille with a black surround. This looks perfectly fine, but it doesn't particularly stand out. In comparison, the XLT can come with body-colored side mirrors and it has a standard gray grille bar that provides a bit of contrast.

The XLT has a keypad on the driver's side door. This eliminates the need to physically use the key to unlock the doors. As long as the key fob is nearby and the correct code is entered on the keypad, the door will unlock.
Inside the cabin of these two trims, there are definitely more differences. The cloth seats in the XL are black onyx and medium dark slate, and in the XLT, the seats are a navy pier and medium slate. This color combination is a little more unique.
Both trims have manually-adjustable front seats with manual lumbar support. In the back, the bench seat has flip-up seat cushions. In the XLT, but not the XL, there's a rear armrest with cup holders integrated into it. Also with the XLT, there's the option to get a power-adjustable driver's seat and heated front seats. For comfort and convenience, some buyers would definitely take advantage of those options.
Another option that's available with the XLT is a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Having that extra source of heat can be very much appreciated in the winter. If the Maverick doesn't have this type of steering wheel, it would have a traditional black steering wheel covered in urethane.
Unfortunately, the XL does not have cruise control like the XLT does. Cruise control can prevent fatigue and can really be useful on long stretches of highway.
The XL does have several other safety mechanisms, though. Like most other modern vehicles, it has a rear view camera to make sure drivers can see what's behind them while they're backing up. It has headlamps that can turn on and off depending on how much light is detected, and it has automatic high beams as well.
Finally, it comes standard with pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking. If the truck senses that it's approaching another vehicle too quickly, it can warn the driver. If the driver doesn't react appropriately, this program can engage the brakes. It can sense pedestrians in certain conditions, too.
Other driver-assist technologies are available on the XL. They include blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane keeping aid. On the XLT, the only difference is that there's an additional option, which is hill descent control. This feature can limit the truck's speed when it's traveling downhill, and it reduces the need for the driver to shift gears or ride the brakes.
The XLT can be upgraded with the FX4 Off-Road Package. It would beef up the truck and make it more suited for rugged conditions. This package comes with slid plates, tow hooks, all-terrain tires, an engine fan and heavy-duty radiator, and five drive modes. It's only available if the XLT already has the EcoBoost engine and all-wheel drive.
It's important to quickly mention that both trims have solid technology systems. Standard on the Ford Maverick is an eight-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, as well as Wi-Fi capability.

There's another thing that sets the Lariat apart from the rest of the Maverick trims. It's the only one that can be equipped with the First Edition Package. This optional package gives the truck an added flair. It would give the truck a black roof with a power moonroof, a soft-folding Tonneau bed cover, special badging, and premium wheels.
Now, to get the First Edition Package, one would have to also get the Luxury Package. This package gives the truck convenient things like heated side mirrors, remote start, a Bose premium sound system, and wireless charging.
