2022 Hyundai Palisade Trim Levels, Configurations & Comparisons: SE vs SEL, Limited and Calligraphy

Compare the 2022 Hyundai Palisade Trims - SE vs SEL, Limited and Calligraphy. What is the difference between them?

The Hyundai Palisade is a relatively recent addition to the market, and it's already made a name for itself as a high-quality three-row SUV. Hyundai has given this model a capable V6 engine, a sizable cabin with room for up to eight passengers, and so many high-tech features.

Every 2022 Hyundai Palisade comes with a 3.8-liter V6 engine. It works together with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and it makes 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. There's plenty of responsiveness with this model. If drivers prefer to have some manual control, they can use the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. Towing capacity is 5,000 pounds, which is excellent.

There are four available trims, starting with the SE and going up to the Calligraphy. As readers will soon find out, the SE is quite refined in many ways, and the higher trims each have their own advantages.

Compare the SE vs SEL Trims. What is the difference?

Standard on the SE are LED accents, LED Daytime Running Lights, and LED headlights. It has LED turn-signal indicators embedded into its side mirrors as well. All of this advanced lighting makes the SUV look very modern. The SEL has the option of getting LED taillights, and it comes with LED interior cabinets lights and welcome lights embedded in the exterior door handles. Its door handles are satin chrome instead of being body-colored like the SE's door handles are.

Other exterior feature that the SEL has are a sunroof and roof rails. The sunroof makes the cabin feel more open, and the roof rails can be nice to have when securing cargo to the top of the vehicle.

Proximity key entry is a convenient feature included with the SEL, but not the SE. It allows drivers to keep their keys securely tucked away. The vehicle can sense when the key fob is in close proximity, and when it is, people just have to touch their door handles to unlock them. Push button start goes along with proximity key entry.

The biggest difference inside the cabins of these two trims has to do with the seating arrangement. The SEL has a pair of captain's chairs in its middle row. This provides easier access to the third row and gives people some extra room to move around.

In contrast, the SE has a second-row bench seat. The positive aspect of having a bench is that it comes with an extra seat in comparison to the configuration with the captain's chairs. The SE has a total seating capacity of eight instead of seven. It's important to note that the SEL does have the option to get a second-row bench.

Both trims have an underfloor storage compartment in the back, sliding second-row seats, and a 60/40 split-fold bench in the third row. They also both have cloth seats. Notably, the SEL offers heated front seats and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support. In addition, the SEL has an available heated steering wheel, and regardless of whether it has the heating element, the SEL's steering wheel is wrapped in leather.

There's a manual air conditioning system on the SE. On the SEL, that gets upgraded to an automatic one that has two zones. Both trims show the external temperature and have vents in the back to keep the air circulating better.

Those who love technology will be pleased with the Hyundai Palisade because it comes standard with an eight-inch touchscreen. That touchscreen is equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth, making it easy to access information stored on a mobile device.

A larger touchscreen that measures 10.25 inches is available on the SEL for an additional cost. With this touchscreen, navigation is included. Those who order the SEL trim also have the opportunity to get wireless charging, an in-cabin intercom, and a pair of USB ports in the third row. Every trim has three USB ports in the front row and two USB ports in the second row, which can definitely be enough for most situations.

The good news is that the safety package on the SE is already quite advanced. It includes various monitoring and mitigation systems that can look out for potential problems, warn drivers about issues, and take action if necessary. Blind spot collision-avoidance assist, parking distance warning (reverse), forward collision avoidance-assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, and smart cruise control are just some of the standard driver-assist technologies integrated into every trim of the Hyundai Palisade.

With the SEL, there's the opportunity to get an ultrasonic rear occupant alert system, a parking distance warning system in the front of the vehicle, and highway driving assist. While certainly not necessary, they could come in handy on occasion.

Compare the SEL vs Limited Trim Levels. What is the difference?

The SEL's available safety features that were just mentioned in the section above are standard on the Limited. Ultrasonic rear occupant alert significantly lowers the chances of a driver forgetting about a child or pet in the back seat. Highway driving assist can be used to prevent fatigue on long road trips, and it can do a good job of controlling steering and speed.

On the exterior of the Limited, there are 20-inch wheels and LED taillights. In contrast, the SEL has 18-inch wheels. The Limited trim has rain-sensing windshield wipers that can turn themselves on and off when necessary, and it has acoustic-laminated front side glass to keep things quieter in the cabin. A lot of customers will love that the Limited has a dual panel sunroof to bring in even more light.

Plus, the Limited has a hands-free smart liftgate. This makes it so easy to open up the back, even when someone is loaded down with bags. The height of the liftgate can be adjusted in case there's low clearance in a particular garage.

In many ways, the Limited feels like a luxury model. It has customizable ambient lighting with 64 color choices, and people will appreciate its premium Nappa leather seats, which look and feel so sophisticated. Instead of having a driver's seat with two-way lumbar support, which is what the SEL has, it has four-way lumbar support. There are even leg cushion extensions for the driver's seat. The front passenger gets to take advantage of a power-adjustable seat as well.

The melange headliner looks elegant, and to stay comfortable, the driver and front passenger can use the integrated heating or cooling elements in their seats. Passengers get to enjoy this type of comfort, too, as the rear seats are heated and ventilated. It's not too common to find these kinds of rear seats in non-luxury models, so this is an indicator of the quality of this Hyundai SUV. Further, the steering wheel has a heating element. It's clear that Hyundai wants its customers to feel comfortable in the Palisade.

Like the SEL, the Limited has captain's chairs in its middle row. It does not come with the option to get a second-row bench instead of those captain's chairs. Its third row has power folding/unfolding seats that can recline. This makes it easier to rearrange things. Seats can be quickly lowered if cargo needs to be accommodated.

On the technology front, the Limited has very nice amenities. It comes standard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and navigation. Also, it has a Harman Kardon premium sound system with 12 speakers and Clari-Fi Music Restoration Technology. The result is a crisp and clear audio quality.

The Limited and the lower trims have something called Rear Seat Quiet Mode. If those in the back don't want to listen to the same music as the driver, this program can make that adjustment to the speakers. The intercom system that was previously mentioned as an available option on the SEL becomes standard at the Limited level.

Another screen has been placed behind the steering wheel of the Limited. It measures 12.3 inches and serves as a digital instrument cluster. It offers useful information and has numbers and text that are bright and clear.

It's likely that the Palisade will have many people riding in it. That's why it's so great that the Limited has a total of seven USB ports, including two that third-row passengers can use. Wireless charging is standard, and the Bluetooth connection allows up to two devices to be connected to the infotainment system.

The safety features found on the Limited are impressive. On top of all the other driver-assist technologies that are included with the SEL, it has a blind spot view monitor, a head-up display, and a surround view monitor. The monitors provide greater perspective as to what's around the vehicle, and the head-up display shows key information, including safety alerts and the vehicle's speed.

Compare the Limited vs Calligraphy Trims. What is the difference?

With the Calligraphy, Hyundai has chosen to put in a few extra elements. The Calligraphy is marginally more expensive than the Limited, so nothing too drastic should be expected.

On its side mirrors, it has puddle lights that welcome the driver as he/she approaches. It has premium rear accent lighting as well as a unique front grille, skid plates, and side door garnish. It definitely looks like a premium vehicle from any perspective.

On the inside of its doors, there are quilted leather panels, and the headliner in the vehicle is made out of a microfiber material. Its steering wheel isn't just wrapped in traditional leather; instead, it has a more upscale perforated leather wrapped around it. Even the cargo sill plate has been enhanced on the Calligraphy.

The only interior color scheme available with the Calligraphy is a dark black one. The Limited, on the other hand, can either have a light or a dark color scheme.

Which Trim to Choose?

The Hyundai Palisade is athletic and capable as well as practical. Since it has three rows of seats and a sizable cargo capacity, it's going to appeal to many customers. Making it even better is the fact that it has so much technology integrated into its cabin.

Even the entry-level trim has a large touchscreen and smartphone compatibility. It also has a full set of driver-assist technologies. Because of this, the SE is recommended to those who don't want to spend too much money and still want to be able to rely on advanced safety systems and a solid infotainment system.

However, there are people who appreciate having extra features, such as heated seats, push button start, and proximity key entry. Then, there are some that want the best of the best, like premium leather seats and navigation. Remember, though, that this all comes at a cost. Because the Limited costs almost $10,000 more than the SEL and the Calligraphy is even more costly, the SEL is the next trim to be recommended. It really does offer so much while being available for a reasonable price.

One last thing to keep in mind is the seating configuration. The SE is the only trim to have a bench seat as a standard component. All the others have standard captain's chairs in their middle rows, but the SEL has the option to get a bench if a customer prefers having the extra seat. This is another reason why the SEL comes out on top if the budget allows for a little extra spending.
