The 2021 Infiniti QX50 has the size that many consumers are looking for. Straddling the line between an SUV and a crossover, the QX50 has good versatility. It's equipped with many modern components to keep people safe and make everyday commutes more pleasant. Since the QX50 is an Infiniti, it has a lot of high-end amenities and a refined style that the brand is known for. All of these benefits, along with the fact that the QX50 is relatively affordable considering its luxury status, make the vehicle a smart buy.

What's New for 2021?

The QX50 first hit the market in 2019. It makes sense that there haven't been any significant changes so far, as the SUV is still gaining followers. What Infiniti has done for this model year is make little changes to the SUV that make it more completive with premium rivals. For instance, being able to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot is now a standard ability. On the Luxe trim, which is a step up from the base model, there are now heated seats in the front row and numerous driver-assist technologies.

Top 10 Reasons to Buy a 2021 Infiniti QX50 – The Pros

1. A Solid Powertrain

Under the hood of a new Infiniti QX50, there's a turbocharged two-liter engine. It can churn out 268 horsepower, giving the SUV a good amount of excitement. Torque is equally strong at 280 pound-feet. At all different speeds, drivers will have the power they need to feel confident. Recognizing that people have various preferences, Infiniti has put in a drive mode selector into this model. The default mode is Standard, but drivers can select from the Sport, Eco, or Personal modes, the latter of which is customizable.

2. Power Can Be Redistributed

Unlike some other crossovers and smaller SUVs that only come with front-wheel drive, the Infiniti QX50 has available all-wheel drive. Infiniti uses an intelligent all-wheel-drive system with this SUV, and it's ready to make the necessary adjustments if the vehicle runs into difficult situations. On snowy or icy roads, for example, the front wheels could have some trouble gripping the road. In this scenario, power would be sent to the rear wheels so they could do some of the heavy lifting. The way in which power is distributed depends on the exact situation, and drivers can simply drive and let their vehicles figure out the specifics.

3. Stretch Out the Legs

It's practical to have two rows of seating, but only if that second row is large enough to comfortably accommodate larger passengers. Infiniti has designed the QX50 to be fairly spacious with 38.7 inches of leg room in the back and almost 40 inches of leg room in the front. This should keep passengers happy even if they're confined to the back seat for a few hours or more.

4. Lots of Storage Space

SUVs are ideal for many consumers because they have so much interior space. In the Infiniti QX50, there's a sizable cargo area behind the seats. It has a volume of over 31 cubic feet, and this is large enough to accommodate a wide variety of items. On some occasions, people may have to transport bikes, skis, or other types of gear. For these situations, the rear seats can be folded down. This increases cargo capacity to approximately 65 cubic feet.

5. Modern Lighting

At night, and sometimes during the day, the lights on a vehicle are the most visible feature. They can leave a lasting impression and can help a model look more edgy and sleek. With the QX50, Infiniti has given all the trims LED headlights that can automatically turn on and off. There are LEDs in the rear lights as well. Most of the trims have LED front fog lights to improve visibility.

6. High-Tech Exterior Features

It's not just the lights that are impressive on the outside of this Infiniti SUV. The liftgate, side mirrors, and window wipers all have more than meets the eye. The liftgate comes standard as a power-operated version, and it's upgraded to a hands-free version in the higher trims. The side mirrors are power-adjustable as one would expect, but they can also be heated and have a reverse tilt-down function. This can provide the driver with useful information when maneuvering in tight spots and trying to park within the lines. Finally, the wipers on some trims can sense rain and automatically turn themselves on to save the driver the trouble.

7. Convenient Interior Amenities

Inside the cabin, there are many details that people will appreciate. Just getting in the vehicle and starting things up can be a nice experience since the QX50 has a smart key, welcome lighting, and a push button start. The climate system comes standard with two zones and can be upgraded to have three zones, and the available panoramic moonroof can easily be opened and closed. For those times when a 12-volt outlet is needed for power, people can use the ones in their center console or cargo area.

8. Premium Seating

The QX50 base model, which is the Pure trim, starts things off with leatherette seating. The Luxe has this type of seating as well. On the Essential, there's the option to get leather seats, which are standard on the Sensory trim. At the top of the line, the Autograph has semi-aniline leather seats.

Certain upgrades, like quilted seats and blue piping, can make the seats look even more upscale. In the back, the rear seats can slide and recline to enhance comfort. In the front, there can be climate controlled seats, and all trims have power-adjustable front seats that can move in eight ways. Plus, they have power-adjustable lumbar support that can be useful on long road trips.

9. Keeping Music Lovers Happy

While the Infiniti QX50 starts out with six speakers, it can get upgraded to have 16 Bose speakers. This advanced audio system includes a subwoofer, tweeters on the doors, and metallic speaker grilles. The result is a crisp and clear sound. To give people more listening options, Infiniti has made SiriusXM Radio a standard component, and of course, people can play their downloaded or streamed music using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

10. Protecting Passengers

All five trims of the Infiniti QX50 come with numerous advanced safety mechanisms. The QX50 can monitor its blind spots, predict forward collisions and engage emergency braking as necessary, warn drivers when they're veering out of a lane, alert people to the presence of rear cross traffic, and engage rear automatic braking to keep the Infiniti from backing up into an object. It can be very beneficial to have an extra pair of "eyes" looking out for drivers since problems can pop up at any moment.

Reasons Not to Buy a 2021 Infiniti QX50 – The Cons

1. Fuel Economy Not Great

Being a relatively new addition to the market, it's reasonable to assume that the Infiniti has pretty good fuel economy. That's not the case, though. Front-wheel QX50s can earn an estimated 29 miles per gallon on the highway and 23 miles per gallon in the city. All-wheel QX50s can achieve just 28/22 (highway/city) miles per gallon. Given the increase in hybrids in recent years, customers have a lot of options that do much better than the QX50 in this department.

2. Regular Suspension

There seem to be a lot of vehicles that feature high-quality suspension systems, especially in the luxury market. With these types of suspensions, vehicles can adjust how they compensate for bumpy roads and can even raise or lower themselves depending on what type of road conditions there are. The Infiniti QX50, unfortunately, just has regular components, not unlike something one would see on a very basic car or SUV.

3. No High Performance Option

Just as there's no way to improve the suspension on the QX50, there's no way to boost horsepower. It's conceivable that Infiniti could have given its top trim, the Autograph, a stronger engine. That didn't happen, and this lack of extra horsepower may push customers towards other models that have supercharged or turbocharged trims available.

How it Stacks Up to the Competition:

2021 Infiniti QX50 vs 2021 Acura RDX

Acura's RDX is comparable to the QX50 in many ways. They are about the same size, have a decent amount of power and efficiency, and have several premium features. The QX50 beats the RDX in terms of cargo capacity, both when the rear seats are up or folded down. Also, the Infiniti's rear seats have a touch more leg room. From a price standpoint, the Infiniti QX50 is a little cheaper than the Acura is, and this may be an important difference to some buyers.

2021 Infiniti QX50 vs 2021 Volvo XC60

The XC60 by Volvo is another SUV that has a similar vibe to that of the Infiniti. Like the Acura, the Volvo is more expensive than the QX50 is. This price difference can be quite large when looking at the higher XC60 trims. Another factor is that the lower trims of the Volvo, those with the T5 designation, don't have as much horsepower as what's found in the Infiniti.

Conclusion

A lot of people really want to drive luxury vehicles because of their overall style. For those types of consumers who want versatile models that aren't too bulky nor expensive, there's the 2021 Infiniti QX50. The QX50 has a timeless look to it, with tasteful exterior details and a sophisticated cabin. It's capable enough to make driving fun, and because there are five available trims, people can easily find a model that suits their preferences.
