Want a coupe, or are you more of the convertible type? You can take your pick on the 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE. This year's line-up receives a mid-cycle style upgrade, and the line-up itself gets a big shake-up with the deletion of the P340, P380 RWD, and formerly line-topping SVR trim levels. And, of course, that means many of the standard features on those trim levels have been shifted around on the remaining trims.

There are a lot of things to like about the F-TYPE, from its vibrant V8 engines to its highly sophisticated styling. All in all, it is quite a fun ride. But it can get a bit jarring for some folks, so it really depends on what kind of ride quality you are looking to get out of a new vehicle.

That being said, this review will go over the changes to the F-TYPE, what drivers might like about it, and what some drivers might find a bit off-putting. Be sure to read through to the end to get all the juicy details on what the 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE has to offer its buyers.

What's New for 2021?

Quite a few things are new for the model year, as we have already mentioned. The biggest change is that the P340, P380 RWD, and SVR models have all been given the ax, leaving the line-up with the base P300, the P300 First Edition, the P380 R-Dynamic, and the now-line-topping R trim levels. The R-Type has a newly tuned suspension on the rear and gets more power than before. Also, the front end has been massively restyled. The front grille is larger, and the LED headlights and taillights have been redesigned as well. The hood has a much more dramatic shape, having been resculpted in a way that really makes it stand out from the crowd. The integrated vents have also been put closer to the engine compartment, and the rear sculpting around the taillights is a lot edgier than before.

Top 10 Reasons to Buy a 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE – The Pros

1. The V8 Engine

One of the biggest highlights of the 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE is its V8 engine. This engine comes on the R, which gets the SVR's old 5.0-L supercharged V8 with the power boosted up to an impressive 575 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. If you want power, this engine delivers it. This engine is about as sporty as it can get, and it is much more desirable than the 4-cylinder or the V6 if you prefer something athletic.

2. All-wheel-drive is Standard on the V8

The V8 comes with standard all-wheel-drive. This gives the tail a bit of sliding out capability, which drivers will like if they want that athletic edge. It also makes for far more secure driving when you do have to drive on a slick road surface. We cannot imagine that you will be doing a ton of off-roading in it, but if you do need to travel down a dirt road, the AWD-equipped F-TYPE can certainly handle it.

3. Its Graceful Style

The 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE really evokes that classic sense of Jag style. There is no detail that hasn't been tweaked to the highest standards, inside or out. The revamped exterior styling brings the F-TYPE to the head of the pack when it comes to elegance. The additional curves and aerodynamic elements let you know that this is a sporty little number. Whether you get the coupe or the convertible, its style will be top-notch.

4. Responsive Steering Coupled with Secure Handling

Sporty vehicles should entail a responsive steering system, and the 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE definitely delivers on that front. While the steering tends to feel a bit light to the touch, it responds quickly to inputs from the driver. And a lot of communication comes back at you through the steering column. Also, the handling feels capable and secure while rounding through tight turns. Cornering should not be a problem, and drivers will likely feel a higher level of confidence in this vehicle.

5. Navigation is Easy to Use

Built-in navigation systems on newer vehicles are still pretty hit-or-miss. Luckily for F-TYPE owners, its native navigation system is one that is easy to use. It does not give you directional details (such as "turn left in .2 miles"), but it does mark your search results on the map it displays. Smartphone users can simply pair up with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto if they prefer to use an app for navigation instead. Either way, it makes for a user-friendly system that doesn't get lost to complex tech gadgetry.

6. The Standard Driver Aids Work Well

While adaptive cruise control is not offered and blind spot monitoring is merely an option, the standard features that are offered work just as they should. Warnings are issued only when it is appropriate, and none of the features come off as being intrusive. And, for the most part, they are easy for drivers to use. If you don't want them on, you can simply switch them off.

7. A Respectable Fuel Economy

You shouldn't expect a luxury sports car to get great numbers when it comes to EPA ratings, but the 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE makes out alright. The 4-cylinder is the most fuel efficient, of course, but the V8 with AWD is not awful. Fuel economy numbers range from 16 to 23 mpg in the city and 24 to 30 mpg on the highway. A lot of the competition falls short of these numbers.

8. Plenty of Soft Touch Surfaces

To go along with our comments about the F-TYPE's style, we really need to highlight the fact that there are a ton of soft touch surfaces inside of its cabin. Jaguar certainly did not go the cheap route by inserting a bunch of hard plastics. No luxury vehicle owner wants to drive something that is littered with hard plastic surfaces, but those vehicles are out there. Fortunately, the F-TYPE is not one of them. You also won't hear any odd rattles or feel as if anything is loose while driving this well-crafted vehicle.

9. Generous Warranty Coverage

Jag goes above and beyond on their warranty coverage. The 5-year/60,000-mile complimentary maintenance that comes included is basically unparalleled for this type of vehicle. While the vehicle's price tag itself can become staggering, Jaguar knows that good warranty coverage can help offset some of that cost. You will be hard-pressed to find a competitor that does better in this regard.

10. The R Model

If we had to pick just one model to buy from this line-up, our choice is the R. This trim level has everything a driver could possibly want, including an all-powerful V8 engine that helps this little vehicle zip along at high speeds. The acceleration is magnificent, and for the cost, buyers get a ton of features. If you're going to roll out in style, why not go all-out?

Reasons Not to Buy a 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE – The Cons

1. Limited Cargo and Cabin Space

This issue is pretty common for the segment. Both the 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE coupe and convertible lack cabin space, and cargo space is extremely limited. You can fit a suitcase back there, and that is about it. You will not be able to tote a golf bag full of clubs to the course. Taller drivers will also find that the roofline sits low, causing their heads to bump up against the headliner. That means they will have to slouch.

2. A Jarring Ride Quality

This vehicle is definitely sporty, and that means the ride quality can become a bit too jarring. If you are used to a smooth, compliant ride, then the F-TYPE might throw you for a loop. You can get adaptive dampers as an option, and they help smooth out the ride. But that, of course, means that you will have to spend more money.

3. A Glitchy Infotainment System

Jaguar's infotainment system is too glitchy for the liking. Apple CarPlay often struggles to connect, which is a huge disservice to drivers who want to sync yup their smartphones and use those apps as opposed to the native controls. And there really are not that many of those on the system. Native voice controls are oddly absent.

4. The V6 Engine

The V6 engine is basically pointless. It barely improves upon the performance of the 4-cylinder, and it doesn't come anywhere near being able to stack up to the V8. For having about 100 more hp than the 4-cylinder, it sure does not feel like that is the case.

How it Stacks Up to the Competition:

2021 Jaguar F-TYPE vs. 2021 Porsche 911

Competitively priced and designed, the 2021 Porsche 911 puts forth a strong performance with its superb handling capabilities. The engine options are also surprisingly generous with fuel consumption, and drivers are given a ton of options for customizing the interior. On the downside, however, the 911 has engine options that are not exactly enthralling. Also, the infotainment system is placed at quite a reach from the driver and can be difficult to use on a technological front.

2021 Jaguar F-TYPE vs. 2021 BMW 8 Series

If you are willing to pay a bit more, the 2021 BMW 8 Series is a cool ride that is all about performance. Its engine options are phenomenal when it comes to power output and acceleration. Additionally, the vehicle balances power with comfort. Taking a long ride in the 8 Series is sheer delight. The interior is extremely elegant, and you even get a bit more cargo space than you might assume just by looking at the vehicle. The rear seats are really cramped though, rendering them mostly useless. Also, outward visibility is hindered by the sloping roofline and roof pillars.

Conclusion

The 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE makes for one exciting ride. The V8 engine is superb, and the interior is decked out in some lovely upholstery and soft touch surfaces. Just bear in mind that the technology inside it is hit-or-miss, which is something you should not expect from a luxury automaker like Jaguar.
