2019 Jeep Wrangler Trim Levels with Comparisons & Configurations.

2019 Jeep Wrangler Trim Levels, Configurations & Comparisons: Sport vs Sport S vs Sahara, Rubicon & MOAB

What 2019 Jeep Wrangler Trim Level Should you Buy? What is the Difference Between Trims?

Last year, Jeep released a much-anticipated redesign of one of its most iconic vehicles with the all-new Wrangler. This classic received new available engines, an upgraded transmission, and new designs for the windshield and soft top. After this makeover, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler arrives with few major changes, although several new driver assistance features have been added as options. If you're shopping for a compact SUV with unmatched off-roading ability, here's what you need to know about the various trims of the 2019 Jeep Wrangler.

Compare the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Sport vs Sport S Trims. What is the difference?

When selecting your Wrangler, you need to choose between the two-door body style and the four-door version (known as the Wrangler Unlimited). All but the second-highest Sahara trim, which comes only in the Unlimited model, are available in both body styles. The two-door Wrangler seats four and has 13 cubic feet of cargo space, which can expand to 47 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded flat. With the four-door Wrangler, you can seat up to five passengers and take advantage of 32 cubic feet of trunk space, which more than doubles to 72 cubic feet when the rear seats aren't in use.

The base engine for the Wrangler is a 285-horsepower V6 that provides 260 pound-feet of torque, long the engine of choice for this particular Jeep. A six-speed manual transmission is standard but can be replaced with an available eight-speed automatic. You can also upgrade to a 270-hp turbo-four that gets 35 additional pound-feet of torque for more powerful acceleration. Your gas mileage will also improve, from an EPA-estimated 18/23 city/highway miles per gallon to 23/25 city/highway mpg.

You'll be able to tow up to 2,000 pounds with the two-door model and 3,000 with the four-door Wrangler. All Wrangler trims can be upgraded with the Trailer Tow Group. This options package includes a class II receiver hitch, auxiliary switches, both four-pin and seven-pin wiring harnesses, a 240-amp alternator, and a 700-amp battery.

Both the Sport and the Sport S as well as the Sahara come standard with all-season tires, which can be upgraded to all-terrain tires.

The base Sport model is equipped with air conditioning, a five-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an eight-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and both USB and auxiliary ports. The only safety tech for this trim is a rearview camera. As for options, you can upgrade the Sport trim with satellite radio. The standard soft top can also be swapped out for a hard top. Black steel 17-inch wheels are standard for this trim.

All trims can upgrade with the Smoker's Group, which adds a cigar lighter and ash tray to the Wrangler cabin. The engine block heater, soft-top window storage bag, and all-weather floor mats are also available as an upgrade for all trims.

As for the Sport S, it comes with standard keyless entry and power windows along with the same infotainment system in the S. However, it can also be upgraded with several different options packages:

- The Active Safety Group, with rear parking sensors, cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring
- The Advanced Active Safety Group, which is new for the 2019 Wrangler and includes forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control
- The Technology Group, with an upgraded 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with satellite radio and automatic climate control
- The Cold Weather group, which is exclusive to the Sport S and adds heated front seats and steering wheel as well as remote start
- The Convenience Group, which is exclusive to the Wrangler Sport S and includes a universal garage door opener as well as a remote start system if you have chosen the automatic transmission

A premium Alpine audio system is available as a stand-alone option for the Sport S. You can also upgrade to 17-inch polished granite crystal wheels from the standard 17-inch silver aluminum wheels.

Compare the 2019 Wrangler Sport S vs Sahara Trims. What is the difference?

The four-door-only Sahara has distinctive interior styling features like low-back bucket seats with premium cloth upholstery, ambient LED interior lighting, a console bin task light, and special instrument panel bezels. It's also equipped with upgraded suspension. This trim comes with 18-inch polished wheels with gray spokes, which you can upgrade to 18-inch wheels with a gray polished face.

Additional features over the Sport S trim include standard automatic climate control, the upgraded infotainment system offered in the Technology Group options package, and a household-style 115-volt power outlet.

You can upgrade the Sahara with most of the same options packages offered for the Sport S, as well as the Electronic Infotainment System Group. This comprises the upgraded Alpine stereo system, navigation, HD radio, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Leather-trimmed upholstery is also available.

This is the only trim that can be upgraded with full-time four-wheel drive; part-time four-wheel drive is standard on other trims. You can also opt for the Premium LED Lighting Equipment Group, which includes LED headlamps, daytime running lights, taillamps, and fog lamps. The Sahara can be upgraded with a one-touch power top.

Compare the Wrangler Sahara vs Rubicon Trims. What is the difference?

The Rubicon is the Wrangler to choose if you want to experience serious off-roading prowess. It's identical to the Sahara but comes equipped with a locking rear differential, off-roading tires, and upgraded performance suspension and brakes. The upgraded 4:1 Rock-Trac HD Part Time 4WD System is standard equipment. The Rubicon is also the only Wrangler trim that can be upgraded with a steel front and rear bumper.

You can also upgrade the Rubicon to 17-inch black wheels with a polished lip from the standard 17-inch polished wheels with black pocket. The Sahara comes with body-colored fender flares, which are optional on the Rubicon. Side steps are standard on the Sahara only.

2019 Jeep Wrangler MOAB Limited Edition

Jeep is known for offering creative Limited Editions of its models, and the 2019 Wrangler is no exception. This year, Wrangler drivers who want something extra special can opt for the MOAB model, named after the red rocks of the Utah town of its namesake.

The MOAB is available in a range of exciting exterior colors, including Granite Crystal Metallic, Black, Mojito!, Bright White, Ocean Blue Metallic, Sting-Gray, Firecracker Red, Billet Silver, Punk'N Metallic, and Hellayella. It's equipped with special flourishes that include 17-inch gloss black aluminum wheels, steel bumper, and rock rails. You'll also enjoy a dual power-dome vented hood, black tow hooks at the front and rear, and the Selec-Trac® Full-Time 4x4 System.

Inside, you'll find the same features as in the Rubicon, but with the upgraded 8.4-inch touchscreen and Alpine stereo. The MOAB is also upgraded with leather trim throughout the interior. This Wrangler is outfitted with the Premium LED Lighting Equipment Group, which includes LED headlamps, daytime running lights, taillamps, and fog lamps.

Final Thoughts

Most Jeep experts recommend choosing the Sport S if you're shopping for a Wrangler. Unlike the base model, it can be customized with a diverse range of options packages and high-tech features so you can truly get a Wrangler that works with your lifestyle. It's unwise to upgrade to the much more costly Sahara and Rubicon trims unless you plan to tackle some seriously tough terrain in your Wrangler. For most off-roading uses, the lower trims can handle the trails better than just about any SUV on the market.

As for choosing between the two-door and four-door versions of the Wrangler, both can comfortably accommodate up to four adult passengers and the Unlimited trim technically has room for five. Both have two sets of LATCH connectors for child safety seats. Unless you frequently travel with several individuals and prefer the extra headroom and legroom in the back, or you really need the extra cargo space, the two-door Wrangler can save you money over the nearly identical Unlimited trim.

2019 Jeep Wrangler Key Features

Few, if any, compact SUVs have the off-roading abilities of the 2019 Wrangler. It's challenging to compare this vehicle to its classmates because it's built for performance and durability, whereas many of its rivals focus on luxury and comfort. Still, if you want an affordable SUV that can be upgraded with high-tech features and can hit the beach, the mud, or the trails on the weekends, it's hard to do better than this classic Jeep. The Wrangler is an icon for a reason, after all, and many generations of fans have fallen in love.

Keep in mind that because the Wrangler is specifically suited for off-roading, it's not the best choice if you do a lot of road driving. You'll notice significant body roll around turns and might find that the handling is not as agile as you'd like. In addition, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler has a below-average predicted reliability score from J.D. Power and Associates and has not currently been crash tested by either the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute on Highway Safety.
