The Kia K5 is a family-friendly sedan that offers a lot of excitement, thanks to two available turbocharged engines. Front-wheel drive is standard and the only option available with the LX. With the LXS, there's the opportunity to get all-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, the K5 can do a more effective job of gripping the road. The two disadvantages to having all-wheel drive are that it costs more and it reduces fuel efficiency. The LXS AWD get an estimated 28 miles per gallon (combined). In comparison, the front-wheel drive LXS can earn a combined 31 miles per gallon.
The LX has an Idle Stop and Go function that lets it shut the engine off when the vehicle has come to a stop. When the driver is ready to move again, the engine will turn itself back on, and the transmission is seamless. This is one reason why the LX has slightly better mileage than the LXS FWD does. The LX can earn an estimated 32 miles per gallon (combined).
When they're behind the wheels of their Kia K5s, drivers can choose from various drive modes. Eco mode saves gas, Sport mode makes the car more aggressive, Comfort mode makes the drive as smooth as possible, and Smart mode can adapt to the situation and switch between various modes. The LX has remote keyless entry, which can be very convenient. This is becoming quite commonplace, so it's expected to be the minimum that a new vehicle would have. The LXS takes things a little further by having a smart key system. With this system, it just takes a simple touch of the door handle to unlock it when the key fob is present. Along with the smart key comes push-button start and remote start.
Front seatback pockets might seem like a minor upgrade in the LXS, but they can be very much appreciated when there are smaller items, books, or papers to keep safe. It's also nice that the LXS has a 60/40 split-folding great bench seat with adjustable headrests. It gives people some flexibility when it comes to transporting cargo, as they can fold down one part of the seatback to give themselves more room for gear.
Kia has given all of its trims a set of driver-assist technologies. The K5 can hit the brakes if it's about to hit another vehicle or a pedestrian, it can correct steering to stay centered in a lane, and it can warn drivers when they seem to be losing their focus.
The LXS has two extra features. Its blind-spot collision-avoidance assist and rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist programs are likely to be used quite often, or at least their warning components will. While the LXS has cloth seats, the GT-Line has seats covered in a combination of cloth and SynTex. SynTex is a synthetic leather, so it elevates the level of luxury. The GT-Line benefits from having a ten-way power-adjustable driver's seat, which comes with two-way power lumbar support. This makes it easier for someone to find his/her perfect position.
Just like the LXS, the GT-Line is available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The difference in drivetrain is the main distinction between the GT-Line FWD and GT-Line AWD. Another thing is that only the GT-Line AWD has heated front seats and an available heated steering wheel. Both have a sporty D-shaped, or flat-bottom, steering wheel.
Kia has given the GT-Line many upgrades when it comes to technology. This trim has wireless charging, which many people will find convenient, and its Bluetooth system can connect with more than one device. Importantly, the GT-Line has a 10.25-inch touchscreen instead of an eight-inch one, and it comes with navigation, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and UVO link remote connectivity. UVO technology allows a personal device to connect with the vehicle so that people can remotely start their cars, call for roadside assistance, and more.
The GT-Line has the same safety components as the K5 does. However, it presents customers with the opportunity to upgrade. It's available with navigation-based smart cruise control, highway driving assist, and a forward collision-avoidance assist system that includes cyclist detection and assistance with junction turning.

The K5 is fun to drive, and with the available Active Sound Design (ASD) function on the EX, it can be even more so. With ASD, audio effects can be emitted to match certain drive modes. For example, if the car is accelerating in Sport mode, the engine noise would seem to be enhanced to help people feel like they're in a race car.
Speaking of audio, it's important to point out that the EX can come with a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system if anyone wants to pay a little extra for it. Otherwise, it would have the same six-speaker sound system that's included in every K5 trim.
The EX provides an additional USB charging outlet in the center console. Since people sometimes travel with multiple devices, it can be nice to have.
Like the other trims, the EX has dual-zone climate control. The difference is that it has rear air conditioning vents so that passengers can enjoy some cool air, too. The EX stands out from the lower trims because it has LED interior lighting and SynTex upholstery on its seats. Other standard features are a wood-graphic accent trim in various spots around the cabin and front seats that are both heated and ventilated.
There are several available upgrades on the EX. It can have a power-adjustable front-passenger seat that can move in ten ways, just like the driver'r seat can. Its driver's seat can have a memory system that can remember two favorite positions. This memory system would work for the side mirrors as well.
On its exterior, the EX doesn't have all of the same sporty design elements that the GT-Line has. For example, it doesn’t have black accents, a rear spoiler, or LED fog lights. It does, though, have a panoramic sunroof. This sunroof can bring in fresh air and more light. When it's too hot, the power sunshade can close things up. Like the GT-Line, the EX has 18-inch wheels, but its wheels have a gray machine finish instead of a black one.
Compare the EX vs GT Trims. What is the difference?
All of the K5s have turbocharged engines. The EX and all of the lower trims have 1.6-liter turbo engines, while the GT gets to utilize a 2.5-liter turbo engine. Because of its larger displacement, it can do much more.
This bigger engine is able to generate an impressive 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. It's used in conjunction with an eight-speed dual clutch transmission (wet type). The GT gives drivers the opportunity to take some manual control over shifting using the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Plus, the GT has a sport-tuned suspension and GT brake calipers that many people will notice and appreciate.
From a fuel efficiency perspective, the GT doesn't do as well as the others. It has a combined fuel economy of 27 miles per gallon. The best that the other trims can do is 32 miles per gallon (combined).
On its exterior, the GT has the same type of styling that the GT-Line has, for the most part. This means that it has the same aggressive designs and black accents. Like the EX, it comes with a panoramic sunroof. Some other differences are that it has 19-inch wheels rather than 18-inch ones, and it has a quad-tip dual exhaust that is functional and looks very sleek.
Inside the cabin, the GT has many of the same features as the EX does. It has the same type of infotainment system as the EX has, and it has SynTex seats, though it has special sport bolster front seats. However, it doesn't have ventilation as a standard component. This is only optional.
One thing that the GT shares in common with the GT-Line and not the EX is that it has a sport D-shaped steering wheel. Finally, the GT-Line is the only one to have a hair-line accent trim in its cabin.

Which Trim to Choose?
If performance matters a lot to a prospective customer, then the GT would be the trim to select if the budget allowed for it. The others simply can’t match its power.
That being said, the standard turbo engine provides plenty of power. The smaller engine on the K5 is more than acceptable, and it’s intriguing that two trims have available all-wheel drive.
When taking all the factors into account, including cost, technology, safety, and style, it seems like the LXS would be a great choice. It has some extra driver-assist systems and the smart key system, in addition to many other attractive elements.
