2016 Land Rover LR4 Pros vs Cons. Should You Buy?

Why Buy a 2016 Land Rover LR4?

Should You Buy a 2016 Land Rover LR4? Here are the Pros and Cons

In a world of SUV and Crossovers, the 2016 Land Rover LR4 is one of the few remaining true SUVs. New for 2016 is the traditional look of the Land Rover dating back to the 1990s Discovery model. The LR4 is ultra-boxy with sharp, well-defined edges that sits up high. However rugged in appearance and performance, drivers will find the interior to be both functional and luxurious in style.

Top 10 Reasons to Buy a 2016 Land Rover LR4 – The Pros

1) Off-road performance (Height-adjustment air suspension)

This feature comes standard and offers four settings:

• Access (lower for loading and unloading)
• Standard
• off-road
• Extended

The LR4 also features intelligent off-road electronics, such as Terrain Response which allows the driver to select the traction control, and off-road condition choices such as "mud and ruts" or "sand and dunes".

2) Seating and comfort (Standard five, or seven-passenger)

The LR4's interior cabin is both comfortable and rich in style. Both first and second rows offer ample room and comfort for adults. Despite the rugged truck-like exterior, the cabin keeps road noise and wind to a minimum for added passenger ease.

In the front seats, the well-contoured buckets offer good support and adjustable armrests. The design allows the driver to sit upright with a clear view of the road. The second row is positioned slightly higher than the first in "stadium seat" design.

3) Cargo (Space and features)

Both the five and seven passenger models offer rear seats that fold flat for optimum cargo space. With the second and third rows folded down, the seven-passenger model provides up to 90 cubic feet of cargo space.

In addition to open space, the 2016 Land Rover LR4 features many options for storing passengers’ items, such as:

• Two large glove boxes
• Large cup holders
• Abundant cubbies

4) Engine

The 2016 Land Rover LR4 engine is a 3.0 liter V-6. While this is the only option, this contemporary engine won't disappoint with features like:

• Direct injection
• Supercharging
• Dual-independent variable cam timing

Its ability to go 0-60 mph in around 7.5 seconds is almost as fast as its V-8 model that proceeded it.

5) Towing capability

When equipped with the properly braked trailer, the LR4 can pull up to 7716 pounds with ease, one of the highest in its class.

6) Safety (airbags and safety packages)

The 2016 Land Rover LR4 offers expected safety features, such as side airbags and curtain airbags as well as:

• Anti-lock Brakes
• Stability control
• Integral off-road mode

The seven-passenger model also provides separate side curtain bags to protect the third road passengers. The LR4 also presents a Vision Assist package that features such as:

• Automatic high-beam assist
• Surround-view Camera system
• Blind-spot monitoring with reverse traffic detection

7) Trim Features

In the base model for the 2016 Land Rover LR4 starts at around $51,000. In the LR4 one can expect:

• Leather upholstery
• Front and rear parking sensors
• 11 speaker Meridian audio system

The next step up to the HSE trim and includes the following features:

• 825-Watt audio upgrade
• Navigation with traffic alerts
• Heated steering wheel/side mirrors

With the HSE-LUX comes, even more, luxury with:

• Interior mood lighting
• Center console cooler box
• Optional access to the extended leather package

8) Fuel Economy

The 2016 Land Rover LR4's slightly smaller engine offers more fuel economy than the previous model’s V-8 engine. The LR4 is EPA rated at 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.

10) Overall look

The 2016 Land Rover LR4 is definitely an SUV rather than a crossover with a tall, boxy look. The LR4 is proportioned well and has been called safari-chic. It is perhaps the most recognizable Land Rover. The exterior lives up to its authentic off-road vehicle capabilities while keeping its passengers comfortable with a smooth ride.

Reasons Not to Buy a 2016 Land Rover LR4 – The Cons

1) Fuel Economy

While the LR4 is more efficient than the previous V-8, it still is not very efficient in comparison to its competitors. The 15/19 city/highway rating is quite a bit lower than the 2016 Porche Cayenne's 20/29 and the 2016 Audi Q7's 16/25.

2) Passenger space (Third row)

The second-row seats do not have the largest amount of leg and knee room, and the third row is virtually off-limits to adults. The seats fold up from the cargo floor, which means head room is severely limited to children.

3) On-road handling

Most owners of luxurious SUVs are not going to do much off-roading, so the on-road capabilities are critical. The LR4's handling is clumsy at best, body roll is noticeable, and the steering can be described as numb.

4) Safety

The 2016 Land Rover LR4 does not have any crash-test results from either of the two major agencies in the US. For drivers that like to see statistics and test results, the LR4 may not be the SUV for them.

Overall, the 2016 Land Rover LR4 is both the rugged exterior and luxurious interior. The LR4 is also a win in the price category when compared to its competitors in the three-row luxury SUV category, the BMW's X5, Audi's Q7, and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. Its classification as an SUV means it has superior off-roading capabilities compared to the Q7 and a higher towing capability.

Whether a driver is looking to tear up the terrain or cruise comfortably with their family, the 2016 Land Rover LR4 offers it all in looks, comfort, and capability.
