Many people can benefit from a little extra utility. At the same time, not everyone needs a huge off-roading beast of a vehicle. That is where smaller SUVs can fit the bill. They can be both capable and practical and are very popular in recent years.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is one of these vehicles. It is one of the smaller SUV offerings from Land Rover, with seating for up to five, but still lives up to this rugged brand's reputation. With luxury features found on all models, it is easy to see how it will appeal to many consumers.

This is the first year of the second generation of the Evoque. It sees some exciting changes for 2020, including the availability of a mild-hybrid powertrain. Legroom has also been increased by extending the wheelbase of the vehicle, which should help add to its appeal as a family vehicle.

Being a Land Rover, the Range Rover Evoque does have some useful off-road features. Hill descent control is standard, as well as a feature known as all-terrain progress control. The Evoque SE can remember up to three different seating positions, something very useful when there are multiple people who are driving it regularly.

The tech in this trim gets a major upgraded. Drivers now get the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, which adds a second touchscreen. This allows drivers to keep their navigation displayed on one screen while having the ability to change music and other settings on the other. Both screens are an impressive 10-inches.

Safety-wise, this trim gets a surround-view parking camera instead of the standard rearview one. There is a forward-facing ground camera that will reveal what is underneath the front wheels. Otherwise, there are no upgrades to the driver aids.

The SE has several important features that the S is simply lacking, making it a smart buy in many cases.

Going with the R-Dynamic S trim means going back to many of the same features that the regular S trim had. The major difference here involves the engine. Although there is still the same four-cylinder under the hood, it is now joined by a 48-volt mild hybrid system. As a result, this model can produce 296-horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission is still standard.

On the outside, the R-Design models are a little more athletic-looking. Inside, the are bright medal pedals to further enhance the sportiness of the vehicle. The R-Design S may appeal to those who want a little extra power as well as a different look for their Range Rover Evoque.

Once again, the R-Design name here is just referring to what lives underneath the hood. The R-Dynamic SE has the same interior and exterior features as the normal SE, minus a few styling differences. Consumers still get the dual-touchscreens and larger 20-inch wheels when choosing this trim. Just like the SE is a better choice than the S, consumers who are leaning toward more horsepower will be better off with the R-Design SE than the R-Design S.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque R-Dynamic Se vs R-Dynamic HSE. What is the difference?

The R-Design does offer a trim that was not seen earlier on the trim ladder. Known as the R-Design HSE, this model has the same engine as the previous two options. It also still rides on 20-inch wheels. The R-Design HSE is the first trim to add a power-gesture tailgate. This allows drivers to both open and close the tailgate without having to even touch the vehicle of their key fob. What sets this feature apart from competitors is the fact that there are sensors on both sides of the tailgate, rather than just one in the middle.

Inside, the seating upholstery is upgraded to soft duotone Windsor. Drivers also have the option of going with Kvadrat premium textile and Dinamica suedecloth. Although the infotainment system remains the same, the sound system does get upgraded to 10-speakers and adds HD radio. There is also a dual-channel subwoofer to enhance the music-listening experience.

This trim adds what Land Rover calls the Park and Drive Package. This means the Evoque R-Design HSE has high-speed emergency braking, blind spot assist, and adaptive cruise control. Consumers who have been waiting for a model of the Evoque with the latest driver aids will likely be very tempted by the R-Design HSE.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque R-Dynamic HSE vs First Edition. What is the difference?

Finally, buyers can consider the First Edition trim of the 2020 Range Rover Evoque. This model does lose the mild-hybrid powertrain, taking the horsepower back down to 246. At the same time, there are exciting additions like LED fog lights to the exterior.

Inside, there are the same seats that were found in the SE. For the First Edition, however, they have a unique cloud and ebony ingrained leather. There is also a fixed panoramic sunroof that helps let in natural light. Other interior upgrades include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and ambient lighting that can be highly customized.

The First Edition also gains a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column. Like the R-Design HSE, the First Edition has the premium 14-speaker sound system with HD radio capabilities. As for safety features, this trim gains a rearview-camera display mirror. This allows drivers to see the image from the rearview camera in their rearview mirror. It can be handy when the view through the back windshield is blocked.

Consumers who value a few extra luxury touches over more horsepower may be tempted to go with the First Edition over the R-Design HSE.

Although there are six different trims, most drivers will likely eliminate the entry-level S and top-of-the-line First Edition from their list of considerations quickly. The SE makes the S look too bare bones. As for the First Edition, consumers willing to pay for a top trim will likely find the R-Design HSE with its mild-hybrid powertrain more desirable.

The SE is a good choice thanks to its upgraded seating and tech features. All three R-Design trims are tempting thanks to their powertrain alone, although the R-Design S will likely be skipped-over. The R-Design SE is going to be a much better choice.

Ultimately, the best version of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is going to be the R-Design HSE. It has the better engine plus quite a few extra driver assistance features. This makes it ideal for both commuting and hitting the road with the family.
