Luxury and athleticism are almost unparalleled in the new 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. This variant of the ever-popular Range Rover is designed to be even sportier than its sister. The handling and acceleration have been tweaked to become even more athletic, but the cabin is just as plush and spacious.

The Range Rover Sport has not been overhauled since the introduction of its second generation in 2014. Because of that, some buyers might initially think that the Range Rover Sport seems a bit outdated. However, there is a lot of good technology inside of this vehicle, and the design does embrace practicality. The Range Rover Sport has had enough minor updates, though, and that should help keep it seeming somewhat up-to-date.

Last year, the Range Rover Sport saw the addition of a new 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid variant as well as an inline-6 cylinder engine that came onto the market midway through the model year. Up first is the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport's base SE trim level. This vehicle is powered by a 3.0-L TDV6 diesel engine that generates 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Along with an automatic transmission, this vehicle can get from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.2 seconds and hits a top speed of 130 mph. This 4x4 4WD vehicle gets about 19 mpg combined on the gas-only variant. There are a whopping 26 different exterior body colors and 17 interior color options to choose from.

Optional packages include the Drive Pack (which has blind spot monitoring, a driver condition monitor, and a traffic speed recognition system), the Drive Pro Pack (which adds blind spot assist), the Park Pack (which has a 360-degree surround view camera, a rear traffic monitor, and a monitor for making a clear exit), the Driver Assist Pack (which includes everything from the Park Pack and Drive Pack Pro), the Vision Assist Pack (which has front fog lights, automatic high beams, and a head-up display), the Towing Pack (which includes a tow hitch receiver, advanced towing assist, and an activity key), and the Climate Comfort Pack (which features a heated steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors on the sun visors, and a refrigerator compartment in the front console).

So, which features come standard on the SE? Standard safety and security features abound, of course, so let us start off with those. The SE has approach/perimeter lights that can be remote activated, a remote keyless entry system, electronic stability and traction control, adjustable front head restraints, glass that is built to resist breakage, power door locks including those on the rear door/tailgate, an anti-theft security system, an engine immobilizer, and LED daytime running lights. Standard driver aids include forward collision warning.

On the exterior, the SE bears a few distinguishing features. It has a body-colored front bumper, a black grille with a chic metallic surround, a black insert on the rear bumper, a metallic front bumper insert, a chrome exhaust tip, black bodyside cladding, a rear spoiler, an automatically dimming side mirror on the driver's side, body-colored door handles, roof rails, a power liftgate, and heated side mirrors. Optional features can include trailer backup assist, auto-latching for the doors, a trailer hitch, mud flaps for the front and rear, side steps, Class IV trailering with just a hitch or with a hitch and harness, two-tone paint jobs, and metallic paint.

What about the cabin and the cargo area? Convenience abounds inside of the cabin, that's for sure. The SE is loaded up with a proximity key, a remote release for the cargo area, power windows, access to the doors and liftgate with the use of a keyfob, hands-on steering assist cruise control, bins on the rear doors, one-touch down on the windows, memory settings for the front seats and side mirrors, a built-in navigation system, and a covered box with the full floor console. In addition to that, the SE has a power tilting and telescoping steering column, a day/night rear-view mirror, 5 USB ports throughout the cabin, automatic climate control, remote engine start, and power folding on the heated side mirrors.

There are vanity mirrors for both sun visors, and there is an overhead console for additional storage. A valet function comes standard, as do an illuminated glove box, four 12-volt DC power outlets, illuminated entry, and a footrest for the driver. Takte note: While this vehicle is a standard 5-seater with its two rows, a third row can be added that will allow for two more passengers. Up front, the passenger's seat is power-adjustable 6 ways, as is the driver's seat. The rear seat is a 60/40-split bench seat that has the ability to recline. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather with some metallic trim around it, and the gear shift knob is done in the same fashion. There are crisp chrome trim elements throughout the cabin, and leather upholstery is standard.

Optional interior features include heated seatbacks for the front seats, a cargo net, a vinyl/rubber cargo mat, the 50/50 bench third row seats that can fold down into the floor, a tire mobility kit, a cargo tray, a genuine wood and metal insert for the console, genuine wood door panel inserts, and heated rear outboard seats.

Entertainment features are abundant as well, naturally. There is a standard 8-speaker sound system as well as HR Radio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and AM/FM/MP3 player capabilities. You also get a real-time weather display, turn-by-turn navigational directions, wireless phone connectivity, internet access, and voice activation for the radio.

Lighting features include standard front and rear parking sensors for the parking aid system, a tachometer, delay-off projector beam LED low- and high-beam headlights, an ignition switch light, tire pressure sensors, a front and rear reverse sensing system, rear fog lights, windows that are deeply tinted, a fading dome light, front map lights, interior ambient lighting, and variable intermittent windshield wipers. Optional features include a heated front windshield, front fog lights, Park Assist monitors, blind spot monitoring, and windshield wipers that can detect rain.

That's all well and good, but what about the HSE? What does it add? For starters, it is also powered by the 3.0-L inline-6 cylinder engine that creates 355 hp. It also gets the same 8-speed automatic transmission as the SE. The Drive and Park packages get added as standard features to this trim level.

Other standard features that come fresh on the HSE include a hands-free liftgate, a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, upgraded trim throughout the cabin, and a 13-speaker Meridian sound system. The P400e powertrain ups the ante by adding the Off-Roading Package as well as the 19-speaker Meridian sound system. The Off-Roading Package gives you extra terrain modes and a low-range transfer case. Go for the P525 and you will get all of that plus added leather trim, beefy 21-inch wheels, and an aerodynamic kit. But you will be taken back down to the 13-speaker sound system on this powertrain option.

The HST marks a big jump in trim levels. It only comes with the P400 engine though, and it gives you the Off-Roading Package as standard features. In addition to that, you get the 19-speaker sound system, the panoramic sunroof, black-painted trim on the outside, a roof that is painted black to match that, and wheel-mounted shifter paddles.

The upholstery gets upgraded to faux suede, and there is even more leather trim to be found inside of the cabin. Heating and ventilation come equipped on the front sport seats, and the rear seats have a heating function too. Tri-zone climate control also gets tacked on for good measure here.

The Autobiography trim level can be ordered as either the P400e or P525 powertrain. It takes what you find on the HSE P400e and gives it much of what you will find on the HST. To all of that, the Autobiography trim level adds a heated steering wheel that is wrapped in leather and has paddle shifters. It also gets astonishingly comfortable 22-way power adjustable front seats, even more leather trim, upgraded leather upholstery, a 360-degree surround view parking camera, and doors that are power closing.

The Autobiography trim level probably seems like it is beyond fully equipped, so just wait until you hear about what comes on the line-topping SVR trim level. This trim level comes with the amazingly powerful P575 engine and basically everything else that the Autobiography equips. The P575 engine generates 575 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, which is absolutely enough to get the Range Rover Sport up and moving in no time at all.

In addition to the super powerful engine, the SVR is given a sport-tuned suspension in order to enhance its performance. Other standard features include unique interior and exterior trim and stylings and special sport seats up front. You can opt for sticky summer performance tires for no additional fee.

You can still opt for the 23-speaker sound system, ventilation on the rear seats, a massaging function on the front seats, and the Wade Sensing system.

Which Trim to Choose?

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is indeed a powerful vehicle, and the line-up is full of choices. While this vehicle certainly has its pitfalls, it also promises a lot of power and a lengthy list of standard features. So, which one will buyers drift toward the most?

We think that honor should go to the HSE. The base SE trim level leaves little room to configure it and really make it your own. The HSE, on the other hand, tacks on two of the SE's packages and lets you choose between the hybrid P400e or the supercharged V8 P525 engine. Either powertrain is an excellent choice but depends on whether you want something more fuel savvy or if you are really going for power output. But the HSE is, overall, a reasonable buy that most prospective buyers will likely be attracted to.
