This three-row SUV seems to have it all, from a spacious and comfortable interior to an engine that's quite capable. The 2022 Lexus GX can be driven confidently in a variety of situations, as it's equally able to handle city highways as it is off-road trails.
All trims run on the same type of engine. It's a 301-horsepower, 4.6-liter V8 that makes the SUV feel strong and athletic. It comes with 329 pound-feet of torque. Every GX model comes with full-time four-wheel drive, which is enhanced with a Torsen limited-slip center differential. Lexus has given this SUV a six-speed sequential-shift automatic electronically controlled transmission. For being a luxury vehicle, the GX can do well in rugged conditions.

Heated and ventilated seats can be added on to the base trim. These days, it seems like so many vehicles have this feature, and it may be a good idea to take advantage of it. To be honest, it's a little odd that heated front seats aren't even standard on the base trim.
Beyond that, the 460 Premium has some options that aren't available with the base trim. For instance, it's available with 19-inch wheels, a satin chrome finish on the lower grille, and a sportier front fascia. In addition, its exhaust tip can shine with a gunmetal metallic finish. At its rear, there can be scarlet taillamps that stand out a bit more than the traditional type. The cabin of the 460 Premium can be upgraded with a heated steering wheel, and the back row can have power-folding seats that can recline.
It's great that both of these trims have several amenities that show off the quality of the brand. They have NuLuxe material on their seats as well as reclining middle-row seats and ten-way power-adjustable front seats. With the 460 Premium, but not with the 460, there's the opportunity to get second-row captain's chairs. This would reduce seating capacity to six, but it would give rear-seat passengers a bit more space to spread out. The default configuration is to have a second-row bench with three seating positions.
If multiple people drive the Lexus GX, it can be nice to have its standard memory system. It can remember settings for the driver's seat and side mirrors so that with the push of a button, things can just slide into place.
Both trims have premium triple-beam LED headlamps that can get a lot of attention. The illuminated running boards might not play a huge functional role, but they definitely add to the style of the SUV. They make it easier to see the door when getting in the SUV at night. These trims come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels. This split-six-spoke design is eye-catching. The 460 Premium can be upgraded with the same-size wheels, but ones with a dark gray metallic finish. The technology packages on these GX trims are mostly identical to each other. Customers will appreciate having 10.3-inch touchscreens with integrated navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM. A remote touchpad can be used to control the infotainment system, but voice commands are accepted as well. With dynamic voice command, many common phrases are recognized so that people can speak naturally to set up phone calls, send messages, look up songs, and input addresses into the navigation program. They can even operate the climate system using everyday speech.
The standard Lexus Enform Remote system works with the Lexus app and is compatible with Alexa and Hey Google. Through that app, users can remote start their engines, check on vehicle health reports, schedule service, and more. With Lexus Enform Destination Assist, there's 24-hour access to a concierge service that can assist people with various tasks, like finding restaurants and looking for certain businesses.
On the 460 Premium, but not on the entry-level trim, there's the option to get a Mark Levinson 17-speaker sound system. It's a 330-watt audio system that provides surround sound.
Technology is also incorporated into the safety package on the GX. All trims have several driver-assist technologies like pre-collision braking, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. They have intuitive parking assist to make it easier to make maneuvers in tight spots. This program uses front and rear sonar sensors to provide drivers with warnings when they're getting too close to other objects.

From a technology perspective, the only thing that the Premium has that the Black Line Special Edition doesn't have is an available Mark Levinson sound system. Otherwise, all of the high-tech components and the safety systems are the same in these two trims.
The mechanical components are also the same between the trims, so the main way in which the Black Line Special Edition is distinct is because of its stylings. It uses trim-specific 18-inch wheels with a gloss black finish. There's a special front and rear valance design as well as a foglamp bezel. Dark chrome accents, black window surround, black roof rails, and scarlet taillamps round out the look. While those taillamps are available on the Premium, the other components just mentioned are exclusive to the Black Line Special Edition.
Also, the Black Line Special Edition has headlamp washers that can be used if the vehicle ever goes through muddy areas. These washers are optional on the Premium.
Going along with the dark and edgy aesthetic, the cabin of this trim has a black headliner. This matches the black NuLuxe seats. Those seats have gray stitching and gray bolster inserts to add a little bit of contrast. Unlike the Premium, the Black Line Special Edition is not available with captain's chairs.

In many aspects, the 460 Luxury is able to handle itself better than the others. It does have the same type of engine and transmission, so this isn't what affects the experience. The difference is due to the 460 Luxury's adaptive variable suspension and auto-leveling rear air suspension. Adaptive variable suspension constantly takes in data so that it can make precise adjustments to the dampers.
With the auto-leveling rear air suspension, things can be more balanced. Anyone who has loaded down the backs of their vehicles with heavy equipment knows that this could otherwise be an issue.
All trims of the GX do have a better-than-average suspension that's called kinetic dynamic suspension system. With it, the jointed stabilizer bars can move independently, and body roll can be reduced. As a result, stability is increased.
Optional on the Luxury are multi-terrain select and crawl control. Multi-terrain select comes with different settings for various conditions. There's a rock mode, one for sand and mud, and one for moguls, for instance. It may be a good idea to get this feature if someone is planning on traversing through very difficult terrain.
Crawl control is a mechanism that maintains a set speed. It's kind of like cruise control, but it's meant to be used in challenging terrain. It can keep the SUV moving slowly and steadily along a trail while the driver focuses on navigating around obstacles. It has five speed modes to choose from.
The safety systems on the Luxury match those of the other trims. The same can be said for the technological elements. However, a small distinction is that the Luxury is available with 17-speaker sound system, a panoramic view monitor, and a multi-terrain monitor. These monitors provide a complete picture of how the GX is doing in relation to objects around it. The multi-terrain monitor has an under-vehicle camera so that it can show the terrain underneath the vehicle and around the tires. It can be very useful when there are a lot of rocks or dips in the trail.
A few minor differences are seen on the outside of the GX 460 Luxury. Instead of riding on 18-inch wheels, it has 19-inch ones. Those wheels come standard with a gray and machined finish, but they can alternatively have a dark gray and machined finish.
More major upgrades have been made to the cabin of this trim. Remember that the lower trims have NuLuxe, a synthetic leather upholstery, on their seats. The Luxury gets to have semi-aniline leather seats. Its steering wheel is enhanced with a built-in heater, and it's wrapped in wood and leather.
The third row of the Luxury has a neat feature that allows the seats to recline and fold with the touch of a button. For those who frequently lower that back row to create more room for cargo, this is going to be appreciated. The Luxury, in addition, has a tonneau cover for the cargo area and illuminated door-sill scuff plates. Like the Premium, but not the Black Line Special Edition, the Luxury can either have a middle-row bench or a pair of captain's chairs.

Which Trim to Choose?
All of these Lexus GX trims are nicely equipped. They have advanced equipment and powerful engines, and they have comfortable interiors with plenty of convenient amenities.
As mentioned previously, the entry-level 460 trim and the 460 Premium aren't that far apart from a budgetary perspective. If someone is prepared to buy a Lexus, then he or she might as well get at least the Premium trim. This trim also gives customers the opportunity to choose from a six-seat or a seven-seat configuration, depending on whether captain's chairs are selected.
The Black Line Special Edition doesn't add too much other than a unique style. For some, this will be enough to attract their attention. For the average buyer, it might not be.
The Luxury has excellent upgrades both inside the cabin and in terms of its mechanics. However, it's more than $8,000 more expensive than the 460 Premium is. This steep price increase may be a bit too much, especially considering that the Premium already feels very elegant.
