The Lexus IS is a stunning sedan that looks sporty and modern. It's available with three different engines. While all of them are high-quality engines, the faster ones really enhance the coverall experience. Lexus has given the IS a number of impressive features inside and outside of its cabin. Compare the 2022 Lexus IS 300 vs 300 AWD. What is the difference?

It should come as no surprise that the 300 AWD is an all-wheel-drive version while the 300 is not. Rather, it has rear-wheel drive. Interestingly, the 300 and 300 AWD have two different engines. The base-trim, the 300, uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with four cylinders. In comparison, the 300 AWD uses a V6.

With the smaller engine, having a turbocharger gives it an advantage. The IS 300 is able to pump out 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Fuel efficiency is estimated to be 21 miles per gallon in the city and 31 miles per gallon on the highway, and it takes just under seven seconds to go from a standstill to a speed of 60 miles per hour. Lexus has matched the engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission that comes with paddle shifters.

On the 300 AWD, there's a six-speed paddle-shift transmission. Acceleration is faster, as this car takes just 6.1 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph. The V6 engine has a displacement of 3.5 liters, and it comes with 260 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Having slightly more horsepower and slightly less torque kind of balances things out in comparison with the 300.

What is somewhat significant is the difference in fuel economy. The 300 AWD gets an estimated 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway. This lower fuel economy may end up being important to some buyers.

Both trims have drive mode select that gives drivers a little more control over the way their cars perform. The IS 300 has a turbo-boost display as well.

The exterior features on the IS 300 and IS 300 AWD are the same. They ride on 18-inh split-five-spoke alloy wheels, with 19-inch wheels being optional. They have LED taillamps and Bi-LED headlamps, and they can be upgraded with premium triple-beam LED headlamps and side mirrors with an auto tilt-down feature.

Similarities are seen in the cabins of these two trims, too. They have the exact same safety and technology packages. Fortunately, they have driver-assist technologies, SiriusXM, Satellite Radio, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, along with eight-inch touchscreens. Customers can choose to get navigation, 17-speaker sound systems, and larger touchscreens for an additional cost.

Dual-zone climate control is standard, and these trims have a sophisticated NuLuxe upholstery on their seats. Heated and ventilated front seats, as well as a heated steering wheel, are optional.

Compare the 2022 Lexus IS 300 AWD vs 350 F Sport Trims.  What is the difference?

When moving to the 350 F Sport from the 300 AWD, there are many key differences. The 350 F Sport has rear-wheel drive, and this gives it a little bit higher fuel economy than the 300 AWD has. Importantly, the F Sport has special suspension in the front and back, and this results in it displaying better handling. It uses the same V6 as the 300 AWD does, but it has an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Notably, the V6 on the 350 F Sport has been improved upon. It's able to generate 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, a considerable step up from the 260 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque of the 300 AWD.

This trim comes with many available bonus features. It can have a Torsen limited-slip rear differential for better traction, and it can have an adaptive variable suspension that can make small, precise adjustments depending on the inputs it receives. Its available drive mode select program can have Eco, Normal, Sport S, Sport S+, and Custom modes.

Sitting in a 350 F Sport is kind of like sitting in a race car. Behind the steering wheel, there's a G-force display and performance-inspired instrumentation. The aluminum sport pedals shine, and the black geometric interior trim looks bold and edgy.

To make things more comfortable during any time of the year, the front seats on the F Sport are heated and ventilated. The driver's seat is power-adjustable, as it is on the 300 AWD. On the lower trims, it can move in eight ways, and on the 350 F Sport, it can move in ten ways and has power lumbar. Plus, the front-passenger's seat is power-adjustable and can move in eight ways. Both seats have four-way adjustable headrests, and the leather-trimmed steering wheel is heated. A rear center armrest can be appreciated by passengers, especially since it comes with cupholders.

The wheels of the 350 F Sport measure 19 inches. They have a split-five-spoke design with a dark metallic finish. They're also available with a matte black finish if anyone prefers a darker color. The F Sport is further enhanced with F Sport stylings, so its grille, rocker moldings, bumpers, and rear spoiler have a more aggressive aesthetic than what's seen on the 300 AWD. This car comes standard with rain-sensing windshield wipers, and another element at the back of the car is an F Sport exhaust.

There is one other feature that the 350 F Sport has. It's active sound control, and it enhances the engine noise. A loudspeaker is hidden behind the dashboard, and when the program is turned on, the engine noise will seem like it's louder. The speaker actually produces an artificial engine noise, but it seems like the real deal. Best of all, the volume can be adjusted.

As its name suggests, the 350 F Sport AWD differs from the 350 F Sport because it has all-wheel drive. Going along with this, it has a six-speed paddle-shift transmission. Unlike the 350 F Sport, it's not available with a limited-slip rear differential.

All of the other mechanical components are identical, though, to what the 350 F Sport has to offer. In fact, these two trims have pretty much all of the same features, other than what was just mentioned.

Compare the 2022 Lexus IS 350 F Sport AWD vs 500 F Sport Performance Trim Levels. What is the difference?

There are major changes at the 500 level of the Lexus IS. All of the 500 trims have rear-wheel drive and eight-speed transmissions with paddle shifters. They have F Sport performance 19-inch wheels, and they come standard with adaptive variable suspension.

Most importantly, they all have V8 engines. One of these engines has a displacement of five liters. It's much larger than what the 350 F Sport AWD works with, and it's much more powerful, too. It delivers 473 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. As a result, it's able to hit the 60-mph speed in a blazing fast 4.4 seconds.

There is a small decline in fuel economy, but it's not drastic by any means. The 500 F Sport Performance can earn 17/25 (city/highway) miles per gallon compared with the 19/26 miles per gallon of the 350 F Sport.

The 500 F Sport Performance has multiple drive modes, which is an option on on the 350 F Sport. It has a Torsen limited-slip rear differential and premium rear brake rotors, along with Yamaha rear performance dampers. Its stacked quad exhaust tips give it a sports-car vibe.

The list doesn't just end there. This trim has a raised hood, and it has a dark chrome trim around its mirrors. Its side mirrors have a convenient function, as they can auto tilt-down when driving in reverse. This can be useful when trying to maneuver between parking lines or get into a precise location in a garage, for example.

There are some adjustments to how the 500 F Sport Performance's cabin looks. To enhance its style, it has F Sport performance front door-sill scuff plates, and it has a power tilt-and-slide moonroof. Its steering wheel column is power-adjustable in terms of how it tilts and extends. A heated steering wheel and power rear sunshade aren't options on the 500 F Sport Performance, though they are on the 350 F Sport AWD.

To go along with the power-adjustable driver's seat and steering wheel, the 500 F Sport Performance has a memory system. It actually works for the driver's seat, steering wheel, and side mirrors.

Unfortunately, navigation is not an option on this trim, nor is a premium sound system or a panoramic view monitor, which are all available on the 350 F Sport AWD. What it does have is intuitive parking assist with automatic braking and rear cross-traffic braking.

Compare the 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance vs 500 F Sport Performance Premium Trim. What is the difference?

The 500 F Sport Performance Premium takes things even further. It has a power rear sunshade to keep some of the sun's heat out of the cabin, and it has premium triple-beam LED headlamps. It comes standard with a 10.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, dynamic voice command, and Mark Levinson premium surround sound with 17 speakers. Its control knobs are machined aluminum, so they look futuristic and sleek. Lastly, it has a panoramic view monitor to give drivers a better idea of what's around them.

Compare the 2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance Premium vs 500 F Sport Performance Launch Edition. What is the difference?

Lexus is making a limited number of the 500 F Sport Performance Launch Edition trim for the 2022 model year. Only 500 models will be available, and like with so many other things, when something is hard to get, it makes it that much more desirable.

This trim has everything that the 500 F Sport Performance Premium comes with, plus a little more. It's only available with an Incognito Grey exterior color that makes it stand out; this color is not an option on any other term. It sits on 18-inch BBS wheels that have a matte black finish.

Inside, it has exclusive black and gray ultrasuede trim instead of NuLuxe. This ultrasuede is found on the door accents and center console, too. The ash wood interior trim looks elegant and complements all of the other details. This car looks stunning from every angle.

Which Trim to Choose?

While it would be cool to drive a limited edition version of the Lexus IS, that's not going to be a practical prospect for most people. If anyone wants a high-performance model of the Lexus IS, it makes much more sense to go with the 500 F Sport Performance Premium. This trim is recommended over the 500 F Sport Performance because of its nicer technological components and more refined details. It delivers the entire package.

The 500 F Sport Performance Premium, however, is expensive, having a cost of more than $60,000. If this isn't within someone's budget, then the good news is that there are many other options.

In fact, the base trim would be a great choice for someone concerned with budget. Priced under $40,000, it's relatively affordable, and it has a lot of upscale features in its cabin, in addition to a nice infotainment system and several driver-assist technologies. It doesn't come standard with heated and ventilated front seats or a power moonroof, but these can be added on. The IS 300 isn't the fastest of the bunch, but it does well, and it should provide a fun ride. Of course, the 300 AWD would be recommended if anyone feels that having all-wheel drive is very important.
