The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a compact crossover SUV with room for five people. This little SUV has a handsome and sporty appearance with a comfortable interior. Mitsubishi offers plenty of standard features for all trim levels. There are five trim levels in all, with two special editions. Most models are available with all-wheel drive (AWD) too.
The rear seats have a 60/40 split configuration. This means that they can be folded down flat for a good amount of cargo space. The available AWD gives the Outlander Sport some modest off-road capabilities. Mostly, the AWD is for improved handling and better traction on slippery pavement.
The Outlander Sport is a practical and budget-friendly car. There are a lot of options and models to sort out when one decides to purchase this vehicle. Here's a rundown of all available models and a look at how the trim levels differ from one another.
Compare the 2.0 S vs 2.0 ES. What is the difference?
The base trim level of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is simply called the 2.0 S. The next trim level up is called the 2.0 ES. The base trim level is only available with 2-wheel drive (2WD), while the ES offers AWD. Both versions of the Outlander Sport come equipped with the same engine and transmission system.
The base engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with dual overhead cams and 16 valves. This is an aluminum-block engine with aluminum heads. It's capable of producing 148 horsepower (hp) and 145 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque. Acceleration and passing power are good here, even with a full load of passengers. This motor gets paired with a CVT, or continuously variable transmission.
These two trim levels have the same suspension system and brakes too. There are MacPherson struts with a stabilizer bar up front and a multi-link suspension with another stabilizer bar in the rear. The brakes are 4-wheel disc ABS models, and there's Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist here as well.
All versions of the Outlander Sport that have the 2.0-liter engine share a combined fuel-economy rating of 27 miles-per-gallon (mpg). All trim levels have a maximum cargo volume of 49.5 cubic-feet. The base model comes equipped with a set of 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. The ES model has a set of 18-inch, two-tone alloy wheels with all-season tires.

Compare the 2.0 ES vs 2.0 LE Trims. What Is the Difference?
The next trim level up after the 2.0 ES is called the 2.0 LE, which stands for limited edition. This model has the same engine and transmission system as before. It's again available as either a 2WD or AWD vehicle. The suspension system, brakes and electronic power steering are identical in these two versions of the Outlander Sport. That means the fuel efficiency, performance and handling are all the same as well.
On the outside, the exterior features are the same as before except where upgrades or additions have been made. The front grille and exterior mirrors are black or black accented for the LE model. The outside mirrors match the body color on the SE models. The 18-inch alloy wheels on the LE trim level come painted black as well. Other than the LE badges, this is the extent of the differences on the outside.
Moving on to the inside, the 2.0 LE gets heated front seats. The upholstery is black with some red stitching. This stitch pattern is also carried over for the steering wheel and gearshift knob and parking-brake cover. These all come wrapped in fine leather for this trim level. The audio panel gets some additional cosmetic flourishes such as a glossy black finish with some silver accents.
The infotainment system for the 2.0 LE gets some nice upgrades. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility get added on to this version of the infotainment system. It's now compatible with SiriusXM Satellite radio too. Mitsubishi even throws in a free 3-month all-access trial for new-car buyers. Voice Recognition Control now allows for hands-free access to the system.
Mitsubishi adds some extra USB ports for the rear passengers inside of the 2.0 LE. All of the safety features are the same when comparing these two trim levels. They both share the same driver-assist technology too. Last of all, they have the same exact warranty coverage as before. Going forward, it's safe to assume that all trim levels have the same features as the previous level, except for where upgrades have been made and extra features have been added.
Compare the 2.0 LE vs 2.0 SE. What is the difference?
The next trim level is called the 2.0 SE. This model again has the same engine and transmission system as before. All of the mechanical features are the same. The two models function and perform exactly the same. This trim level gets another new front-grille design. This time, it's a combination of gloss black and satin silver. There's some additional chrome trim for the exterior too.
The exterior mirrors go back to being body-colored for this trim level. They add on integrated turn signals for these mirrors. The mirrors can even be folded in with a power-folding feature. This helps to avoid mishaps when in tight parking spots. The SE goes back to the two-tone alloy 18-inch wheels. This model is available in both AWD and 2WD variations.
The upholstery for the seats is now Mitsubishi's Soft-Touch material. There's some additional silver trim on the inside of a 2.0 SE model. This trim also gets the owner Push-Button Start and Mitsubishi's FAST-KEY entry system. Most of the safety features and driver-assist tech is the same as before. The 2.0 SE does add on a Blind-Spot Warning, Lane-Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, though.
One interesting this about the 2.0 SE trim is that there's a special edition of it. This doesn't work like most special editions do. It's really more like an additional trim level that sits between the 2.0 LE and the 2.0 SE by price point. It's identical to the regular 2.0 SE in every way except that it removes the Blind-Spot Warning, Lane-Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert features. This makes it cheaper than the regular 2.0 SE.
Compare the 2.0 SE vs 2.4 GT Trims. What Is the Difference?
The final trim level for the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is called the 2.4 GT. This trim level actually has a special edition just like the 2.0 SE does. It also works the same way as before. The Special Edition 2.4 GT removes some driver-assist features and then is otherwise identical to the regular 2.4 GT models. It's less expensive than the regular 2.4 GT but more expensive than the 2.0 SE.
The 2.4 GT has an upgraded, more-powerful engine. This time around, it's equipped with a 2.4-liter engine that produces 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. This engine has a combined fuel-economy rating of 25 mpg. It shares the same brake system, CVT and suspension as the previous trim levels. The warranty coverage is once again the same as before.
There are no major feature changes for the 2.4 GT on the outside. On the inside, the seats are now covered with leather-appointed upholstery. The driver's seat is a performance bucket seat with more support, but it goes back to being a 4-way power-adjustable model while the 2.0 SE had 6-way adjustments.
The infotainment system and audio setup don't change when moving up to the 2.4 GT trim level. This trim gets an auto-dimming rear-view mirror with Homelink. The rest of the safety features and driver-assist technology stay the same. The main difference between the 2.0 SE and the 2.4 GT is the more powerful engine with its additional horsepower and torque.
Which Trim to Choose?
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a great compact crossover vehicle. Few buyers would be disappointed with any of the available trim levels. With that said, there isn't a large price difference when moving up a trim level at any stage. Most buyers should go right for the top and select the 2.4 GT model. It's still a very affordable car when compared to the competition.
The 2.4 GT has a nice performance upgrade from its 2.4-liter engine. The extra horsepower goes a long way. It transforms a practical and reliable car into something that's just more fun to drive, without losing anything in the process. It also comes loaded with every convenience and safety feature that Mitsubishi has to offer. Unless the buyer is on an extremely tight budget, there's no reason to settle for anything less than the 2.4 GT.
