Extra small sedans are not right for everyone. They are not ideal for families or those who need to tow or haul, for example. That said, they are perfect for those who want an efficient vehicle that is easy to maneuver around town. Although the sedan market has shrunk in recent years, there are still some respectable options out there.

One of those options is the 2022 Nissan Versa. This subcompact sedan has a lot going for it, including its available manual transmission and its comfortable cabin. Buyers can also get the latest safety features at a reasonably low price, making the Versa an even smarter choice.

There are only three trim levels available for the 2022 Nissan Versa, which simplifies things for shoppers to an extent. At the same time, buyers will want to really get to know all three options to ensure they are getting the one that has the features they use on a day-to-day basis. The entry-level S may look like a good fit at first, but on closer inspection, buyers may need to go up to the SV or even the SR trim to get the things that they need to be happy long-term.

Compare the S vs SV Trims. What is the difference?

The entry-level Versa S can be had for around $15,200, making it one of the most affordable options currently out there. A 1.6L four-cylinder engine comes standard for this Versa, as well as the other two available trims. The output is 122-horsepower and 114 lb-ft of torque. While this is not a lot of power, it does a respectable job of moving the Versa around. Being underpowered is pretty expected in the subcompact car class.

Buyers after a five-speed manual transmission will have to choose the S trim, where one comes standard. Available for the S is also the continuously variable transmission utilized by the higher trim levels. Adding the CVT will cost buyers around $1,600 more. With the manual, the Versa S is estimated to get 27mpg in the city and 35mpg on the highway. With the available CVT, those numbers are 32mpg city and 40mpg highway. The CVT estimates are excellent for the class, while the manual estimates are around average.

Front-wheel drive is standard for all 2022 Versa models. The S is equipped with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, plus a brake assist feature. Other performance highlights for this trim include electric power steering, an independent front suspension, and torsion beam rear suspension.

There are 15-inch steel wheels underneath the Versa S. Halogen projector automatic headlights are included, plus power outside mirrors. The S shows off Nissan's V-Motion front grille. There are black side mirrors, black door handles, and a carbon-fiber look for the rear diffuser. Altogether, the Versa S has a sporty and bold exterior look.

Now for the comfort and convenience found inside. Air-conditioning with an in-cabin microfilter is included, along with power windows. The driver's window has the one-touch auto up and down feature. Remote keyless entry is also part of the standard equipment. There is a 12-volt DC power outlet along with sun visors that include extensions and vanity mirrors.

A six-way manually-adjustable driver's seat and a four-way manually-adjustable front passenger seat come standard for the Versa S. There is cloth seat trim and a matte "carbon-fiber look" interior door trim. On the bright side, this otherwise bare-bones vehicle does have a 7-inch touchscreen and voice recognition features. Siri Eyes Free is included, plus Bluetooth. There are steering-wheel-mounted controls and a total of three USB ports.

When it comes to safety features, the Versa S has the basics. This sedan has an energy-absorbing steering column, zone body construction with crumple zones, and the Nissan Advanced Air Bag system. There is also a tire pressure monitoring system. Also included is an immobilizer system to increase security.

There are also a few advanced driver aids to be found. Intelligent forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning are all included. Automatic high beams are also found on the S and all other Versa trims, along with rear automatic emergency braking. The Versa S even comes with a hill start assist.

The Nissan Versa S has seating for up to five. It is small but offers 88.9 cubic feet of interior passenger volume, which is enough for four adults to sit comfortably. As for trunk space, this entry-level model offers up to 14.7 cubic feet. That may not seem like a lot, but it is really quite good for the class.

For approximately $2,800 more, buyers can decide on the 2022 Versa SV. Front-wheel drive is standard, along with the same 122-horsepower engine. This vehicle is only available with the CVT, meaning it has phenomenal fuel economy but does not offer the thrill associated with driving a stick.

The wheels for the SV are 16-inches and are aluminum alloy. As for the side mirrors, they are body-colored and gain heat. The door handles are also body-colored for the SV. This model gains a push-button ignition and rear-door alert. While that last feature cannot detect if there is anyone or anything in the backseat, it does remind drivers to look back there if the rear door was opened prior to leaving. There is premium cloth trim on the upholstery, plus sophisticated chrome interior door handles.

Perhaps the biggest reason to go up to the SV trim is for the smartphone integration. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are added here, making it much easier to make phone calls, send text messages, and look up directions while on the go. Compatible smartphones will let drivers keep their hands on the wheel while still staying connected on the go. Satellite radio is included as well. The tire pressure monitoring system gets an upgrade to show the pressure of individual tires. It also adds an "Easy-Fill Tire Alert" feature to make life easier.

Elsewhere, the SV gains blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. This is also the first trim to have driver attention monitoring, a sophisticated tool that monitors the driver's patterns to watch out for signs of distraction or drowsiness. For some reason, the SV also has a larger trunk. It can handle 15 cubic feet, as opposed to the 14.7 cubic feet of space available in the entry-level S. The SV is the first trim to add 60/40 split-folding rear seats, further adding to its versatility.

There are a variety of packages and stand-alone features that are available for all three 2022 Versa trim levels, including the S. Buyers can add a center armrest with storage for an extra #320, for example. They can also get a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror with a universal remote for $215. Other options include an emergency road kit, a sliding trunk organizer tray, and illuminated kick plates.

Compare the SV vs SR Trims. What is the difference?

The best-equipped version of the Versa is the SR trim level. It costs around $600 more than the mid-level SV. Once again, this model is only available with a CVT. The engine and drivetrain remain the same as the prior two options. There are 17-inch 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels underneath the Versa SR, and the halogen projector headlights are replaced by LED ones here.

This model also has the V-Motion grille, but it is dark chrome here for a more sophisticated look. The heated side mirrors add LED turn signal indicators, but they are black instead of body-colored. The SR is the only 2022 Versa trim level to have a body-colored rear spoiler to give it a slightly sportier look. If buyers want a spoiler for the S or SV, they have to be ready to spend an extra $435.

Inside, automatic climate control becomes an available feature. A remote start is standard. Setting the cabin of the SR apart is the sport cloth front seats along with the leather-wrapped steering wheel and unique dash trim. Heated front seats are another available option when buyers choose the Versa SR. It is worth noting that not even the top model of this Nissan sedan offers power adjustment for the driver and the front passenger.

The S and SV models have only four speakers for their stereo systems. This number goes up to six inside the SR. The top trim has the same standard driver assistance features as the SV, but it gives buyers the option of adding adaptive cruise control as well. That feature is bundled with the heated front seats and automatic climate control in a convenience package that is exclusive to the SR.

Exclusive to this top model of the Versa is the "Follow Me Home" headlamp feature. This means that the headlights will stay on for up to fifteen seconds after the sedan has been switched off. They also come on when the Versa has been unlocked via the keyfob. The goal is to provide drivers with a lit path to and from the vehicle after dark.

Which Trim to Choose?

The 2022 Nissan Versa makes a fine choice in general. It has capable handling, a spacious interior, and excellent fuel economy. For those reasons, many critics name the Versa the best non-luxury compact car. There is no bad choice when looking at the three trims, either.

All models of the 2022 Nissan Versa are reasonably affordable. The entry-level model is the way to go for someone who is trying to spend as little as possible while still getting a brand-new vehicle. Purists who want a manual transmission will also want to settle for the S, although they may find themselves disappointed with the performance of the Versa overall. For most buyers, however, the S is lacking too many features to be a serious contender.

The mid-level SV makes significant improvements by adding smartphone integration and extra driver aids. Satellite radio is another nice touch. Ultimately, buyers will want to step up even higher on the trim ladder.

At around $19,000, the 2022 Nissan Versa SR is still quite reasonable. It adds comfort to the cabin and a bit more flair to the exterior with things like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a rear spoiler. If it fits in the budget, buyers should also opt to add the available convenience package to get the heated seats, automatic climate control, and adaptive cruise control, all for only $400 extra.
