The 2022 Toyota GR Supra is a vehicle that's built for thrills. This athletic two-door has the bold stylings that one would expect from a sports car. It sits low to the ground and seems to hug the road, offering excellent handling. This performance-oriented Toyota manages to have a good amount of technology and interior amenities. It's certainly a showpiece and will attract attention anywhere it goes.

The name "Supra" is taken from the Latin prefix that means "to surpass." This is fitting, since a car like the Supra is one that anyone can picture zooming down the highway. The roots of Toyota's Supra go back to the 1980s. It went through a few variations over the years, only to go on a long hiatus in 2002.

Toyota brought back the Supra for the 2020 model year. It gained a lot of attention as it made its return to the market. The 2022 version is modern and athletic, and it has many high-tech features for people to take advantage of. There are four trims for people to consider.

Compare the 2.0 vs 3.0. What is the difference?

The 2.0 and 3.0 might look similar to each other, but there are actually a lot of differences between the two. The names of these trims make sense, once one learns that the 2.0 runs on a 2.0-liter engine while the 3.0 is powered by a 3.0-liter engine.

With the smaller engine, there are four cylinders. Horsepower is 255, and torque is 295 pound-feet. These numbers aren't disappointing by any means. For a car of this size, having that much power means that the ride can be quite exciting. The 2.0 can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in five seconds, and its top speed is 155 miles per hour. Sport-calibrated electric power steering, rear-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters contribute to the fun.

The larger engine has six cylinders and can make 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. It can take the car from a standstill to a speed of 60 miles per hour in only 3.9 seconds. This is a significant upgrade over what the smaller engine can do, and it should make prospective buyers really think carefully about what they're looking for in their next vehicles.

As the enhanced model, the 3.0 had an adaptive variable sport suspension system. This system uses high-tech equipment to make small adjustments to the suspension. Adjustments can be made every 20 milliseconds, and information is constantly being processed in order for the suspension to respond appropriately to the conditions. The ride can be soft when the Supra is going over bumps. On the highway, things will be stiffer since the car is traveling at a steady rate.

The 3.0 has Brembo, four-piston fixed caliper disc brakes in the front. In contrast, the 2.0 has one-piston aluminum floating-caliper disc brakes in the front. Brembo brakes are widely considered to be better because they're generally larger, lighter, more durable, and more responsive than other kinds of brakes.

The 3.0 looks a bit more upscale than the 2.0 does. It rides on 19-inch wheels instead of the 18-inch wheels that the 2.0 have. Note that both types of wheels are sophisticated. The smaller ones are cast-aluminum and have a ten-spoke design with a dual-tone finish. The larger ones have a dual-tone finish as well, and they're forged-aluminum twin-spoke wheels.

Both trims have dual rear exhaust outlets. On the 2.0, the exhaust tips are polished stainless steel, and on the 3.0, those tips are brushed stainless steel.

The 2.0 has gloss-black heated side mirrors with an auto-folding function. The mirrors are similar on the 3.0, but they're matte-black and also have a memory function. On the two trims, the driver's-side mirror can automatically dim when it senses bright lights, and the passenger-side mirror can tilt down when the vehicle is backing up. This helps the driver see how close the tires are to the curb, other objects, or parking lines.

LEDs are standard on the GR Supra. All trims have LED front turn signals, LED Daytime Running Lights, six-lens auto-leveling LED headlights, LED taillights, and LED backup lights.

As one would expect, the inside of the GR Supra feels kind of like a cockpit. The sport seats are supportive, and everything looks sleek and streamlined. Behind the steering wheel, there's an 8.8-inch full-digital LCD gauge cluster that drivers can use to track how they're doing.

Black leather and Alcantara seats are standard. The 2.0 has manually adjustable seats with knee-support cushions. The carbon-fiber interior trim is modern, and the push button start and smart key system are convenient. On the 3.0, the power-adjustable seats are upgraded with heating elements.

There are some slight changes to the 3.0's technology package. It treats passengers to a 250-watt, ten-speaker HiFi sound system. In comparison, the 2.0 only has four speakers. On both trims, though, there's the opportunity to get a 500-watt surround sound system with 12 JBL speakers.

Both trims have an 8.8-inch display screen with digital audio, Bluetooth connectivity, and SiriusXM. They offer the option to get an 8.8-inch touchscreen with smartphone compatibility and voice recognition.

In terms of safety, there aren't any differences between the standard packages on the two trims. They both have a good number of driver-assist technologies and other mechanisms that can work to keep people out of harm's way. They have rearview cameras, pre-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning with steering assist. Hill start assist keeps them from rolling backwards after being stopped on a hill, and automatic high beams can be useful on dark roads. While they don't have all-wheel drive, they do have traction control.

Unfortunately, the Toyota GR Supra trims don't have 360-degree monitors, nor do they have adaptive cruise control. In regards to the latter, perhaps the company figured that somebody buying a sports car would actually want to be in control of it on the highway rather than letting it adjust its own speed.

One other piece that the GR Supra lacks is standard blind spot monitoring. That's commonly found in Toyota models, so this may be something that consumers notice. As part of a package, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available on the 3.0. This safety package also includes parking sensors and adaptive cruise control.

Compare the 3.0 vs 3.0 Premium Trims. What is the difference?

The 3.0 Premium, as its name suggests, uses a 3.0-liter engine like the 3.0 does. This more advanced trim has slightly different brakes than the 3.0 does. Its Brembo brakes have red-painted calipers and a silver Toyota Supra logo on them. Red floating calipers are found on the cast-iron disc brakes in the back. The 3.0, on the other hand, has aluminum floating-caliper rear disc brakes. These red accents are little details that can make a big impact on the overall style of the car.

Other than this, the 3.0 Premium looks just like the 3.0 does from the exterior. Inside, there are some notable upgrades. Instead of having Alcantara and leather seats, the 3.0 Premium has leather seats. The 3.0 Premium steering wheel is pure leather as well, rather than being a mix of Alcantara and leather. Alcantara feels like suede, but it's actually a synthetic material. It looks fairly upscale and is easy to care for, but many feel that it's not as high-quality of a material as genuine leather is.

On the 3.0 Premium, the sport pedals enhance the appearance of the car and can help drivers feel like they're getting ready to race down a track. Plus, the driver benefits from having a full-color head-up display that can show key information like the speedometer. It eliminates the need to glance down as much to read that information on the digital information cluster.

From a technology standpoint, the 3.0 Premium has some more attractive offerings. It has a faster charging port than what's found on the 3.0, and the optional 12-speaker sound system on the 3.0 becomes standard at the 3.0 Premium level. Importantly, the 3.0 Premium has the 8.8-inch touchscreen with touchpad control, and it has navigation. It also has Qi-compatible wireless charging and Toyota Supra Connect, which gives users the ability to do several tasks, such as make emergency calls, get real-time traffic information, and remotely lock the doors. The touchscreen and Toyota Supra Connect, but not wireless charging, are options on the 3.0 and 2.0.

Compare the 3.0 Premium vs A91-CF Edition. What is the difference?

New for the 2022 model year is the A91-CF Edition. "CF" stands for carbon fiber. This trim has very limited availability, so if anyone is reading this and is interested in getting one, it's a good idea to contact a dealer and reserve this vehicle as soon as possible.

This A91-CF Edition has the same mechanical components as the 3.0 Premium does, so it doesn't have any advantage from a performance perspective. How is it different then? It has a few stylistic enhancements that make it seem more luxurious.

Living up to its name, it has a carbon-fiber front splitter, side rockers, canards, and a duckbill rear spoiler. Those with high-end tastes are going to love all of these details.

Inside its cabin, it has Alcantara and leather seats. While the other trims have pure black seats, the A91-CF Edition has black and red seats with red stitching. This helps them pop in terms of style, and it gives the car a unique flair.

Unfortunately, the A91-CF doesn't have the same type of fast USB charging port that the 3.0 Premium does. It doesn't have a head-up display either. It does have heated front seats to provide extra warmth in the colder months. It also has sport pedals.

Which Trim to Choose?

When choosing between the various Toyota GR Supra trims, it all comes down to the overall experience. This car is designed to be one that's fun to drive. All trims offer some excitement, but the trims with the 3.0-liter engine do a much better job at this. The 2.0-liter engine is fine, but some who are considering buying themselves a GR Supra or a vehicle of this caliber aren't going to be that happy with something that's just adequate.

There are three GR Supra trims that have the larger engine. The 3.0 Premium and A91-CF do have some extra features, but they're associated with higher price tags. Whereas the 3.0 costs about $51,500, the 3.0 Premium costs almost $54,700 and the A91-CF tops things off with a cost of over $63,000.

That's why the 3.0 is the recommended trim for the 2022 Toyota GR Supra. It has the type of engine that people will be attracted by, it has a nice cabin with plenty to appreciate, and it has a more reasonable cost than the higher trims do.
