2022 Highlander vs Grand Cherokee - How Do They Stack Up? Which is Better?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander and 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee are both full-sized SUVs with plenty of room for family or friends. Both vehicles have massive amounts of cargo space, too. The Highlander and Grand Cherokee each provide excellent off-road performance, making them true Sport Utility Vehicles in the purest sense of the term. They both offer comfortable interiors, making them ideal vehicles for family hauling, road trips or just daily commutes to work.

The Toyota Highlander has three rows of seats, providing plenty of room for seven or eight people. There are two body-style variations for the Grand Cherokee. There's the standard model with two rows of seats and the Grand Cherokee L with its three rows of seats. The standard model can seat five, while the L models have room for up to seven people. Both vehicles have a similar size and body style.

Toyota's Highlander measures in at 195-197-inch long, 76-inches wide and 68-inches tall. There is 141.3 cubic-feet of passenger volume and a maximum of 84.3 cubic-feet of cargo space. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is 194-inches long, 78-inches wide and 71-inches tall and has a passenger volume of 105 cubic-feet. Grand Cherokee L models come in at 205-inches long, 78-inches wide and 72-inches tall and have a passenger volume of 152 cubic-feet. A Grand Cherokee gets 68.3 cubic-feet of cargo space while the Grand Cherokee L offers 84.6 cubic-feet of cargo space.

There are a lot of similarities between these two large SUVs. They are often compared to one another and will frequently appeal to the same crowd of potential buyers. With that said, there are also a lot of differences between the Highlander and Grand Cherokee that set them apart from one another. Here's a look at how they compare when it comes to their powertrains, drivability, safety features and overall value. We will then try to decide which is the better overall vehicle.

The Powertrain

Toyota offers two different powertrains for their 2022 Highlander. There's a 3.5-liter V-6 and an hybrid model with two electric motors and a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The V-6 engine has a Dual Overhead Cam design with 24 valves and Dual Variable Valve Timing. It produces 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. It also has Start/Stop Technology for better fuel efficiency.

For the hybrid powertrain, the combustion engine produces 186 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The combined power output for this powertrain is 243 horsepower. The hybrid gets a continuously-variable transmission, or CVT. The standard V-6 models will come equipped with an 8-speed, electronically-controlled automatic Transmission.

The Highlander has several drive-trains, depending on the trim level. There's Front-Wheel Drive (FWD), All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and an Electronic On-Demand AWD system. A Highlander with FWD and the V-6 engine should get around 21 miles-per-gallon (mpg) in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. This drops to 20 mpg and 27 mpg for models with AWD. Hybrid models have a combined fuel-economy rating of 36 mpg with FWD and 35 mpg with AWD.

The Highlander has a drive-mode select system for different driving scenarios. Some models get modes such as Sport, Eco, Normal and Snow. The Hybrid Limited models add EV and Trail modes. There's also an available Multi-Terrain Select with choices such as Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt or Normal. The Highlander provides excellent performance on or off of paved roads and in various weather conditions.

Every model of the Highlander gets Electric Power Steering. There's power-assisted, ventilated front-disc brakes as well as rear disc brakes. The front end has an independent, MacPherson strut suspension with a stabilizer bar. The rear has a trailing-wishbone suspension.

Jeep offers three different powertrain options for their latest Grand Cherokee. Models will be equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 , a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 or a plug-in hybrid. Both of the gasoline-only engines get Variable Valve Timing. They also both come equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission. FWD is standard for models with the V-6 while the V-8 and hybrid models automatically get AWD.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V-6 engine and FWD will have a combined fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg. This engine makes 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Models with the V-8 HEMI produce 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. These models of the Grand Cherokee have a combined fuel-economy rating of 17 mpg.

The Grand Cherokee pug-in hybrid models will combine a turbocharged, 2.0-liter I4 engine with two electric motors to produce 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The EPA has estimated that a Grand Cherokee with this setup and AWD will have a fuel-economy rating of 56 MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent).

Every Grand Cherokee has four-wheel disc brakes and an anti-locking brake system. There's Electric Power Steering for all models. The front gets an independent MacPherson strut suspension. This includes coil over gas-charged shock absorbers. The rear features a load-leveling suspension, utilizing a Quadra-Lift® Air Suspension.


Drivability covers engine performance, acceleration, braking power and steering dynamics. It can also cover things like traction and off-road performance. The ride quality, interior comfort and entertainment features also have a large impact on the overall driving experience.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander has good acceleration from its standard V-6 engine. It can get up to 60 miles-per-hour (mph) in a reasonable 6.7 seconds. The brakes are strong yet smooth and work just fine for being attached to a large, heavy vehicle. Steering and handling is good, but unremarkable. The overall ride quality is extremely comfortable, thanks to a cozy interior and the excellent suspension system.

The Highlander excels at off-road performance. A 10-way power driver's seat with power-adjustable lumbar support is available. Heating is available for the first- and second-row seats. Most models come stock with SofTex®-trimmed seats, though leather trim is available as well. There's ambient interior lighting and a Three-Zone Automatic Climate-Control system with an air filter.

Toyota offers a premium audio system by JBL with 11 speakers, a subwoofer and an amplifier. There's an available 12.3-inch touchscreen and a built-in Dynamic Navigation system as well. The system has Bluetooth for music streaming and Voice-Command technology, which allows for hands-free phone calls. The infotainment system has compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

For the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the acceleration from the V-6 engine is comparable to that of a Highlander with a V-6 engine. It gets noticeably better when the Grand Cherokee is equipped with the V-8 HEMI, as one would expect. The stopping power of the brakes is just about equal when comparing these two SUVs. Steering and handling is more tight and accurate when one is behind the wheel of a Grand Cherokee.

The ride quality is not quite as smooth and refined when inside of a Grand Cherokee. Off-road capabilities, however, are far superior in the Jeep. Lower trim levels get 8-way power seats up front. The top trim levels have 12-way power seats with adjustable lumbar support. Jeep offers a variety of upholstery choices for the seats, including Capri and Nappa leathers.

Heating and ventilation is available for both the front and rear seats. The interior is downright luxurious in the top trim levels. Jeep's Uconnect® 5 Infotainment System has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, an available WiFi hot-spot and an available navigation system. It's also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's even an available High-Performance Audio system with 14 speakers and a 950-watt amplifier.


Every model of the 2022 Toyota Highlander comes equipped with eight standard airbags. Toyota's Star Safety System™ includes features such as Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Electronically Controlled Braking, Anti-Lock Brakes and Traction Control.

Toyota's Safety Sense™ 2.5+ system has a wealth of driver-assist features and safety tech. This includes a Pre-Collision System that can even detect pedestrians. There's Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane-Tracing Assist and Lane-Departure Alert with Steering Assist.

Toyota's Safety Connect includes an Emergency Assistance feature as well as Roadside Assistance. There's a Vehicle Locator in case your Highlander is stolen. The Highlander also gets an anti-theft alarm and engine immobilizer to shut down the vehicle if an unauthorized driver tries to take it. Automatic Collision Notification alerts emergency services in the event of a crash.

Every Toyota Highlander has child safety locks and windows in the rear. There's always a LATCH system for securing child safety seats in the rear-seat area. A Tire-Pressure Monitor reminds drivers to keep their tires safely inflated. All seating positions get 3-point seat-belts. Last of all, there's a Blind-Spot Monitor that can even detect rear cross-traffic.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has advanced multi-stage airbags up front. There are also supplemental, seat-mounted, side-impact airbags up front. Additionally, the driver and front passenger get airbags for knee protection. Supplemental side-curtain airbags protect passengers up front and in the rear seats.

A ParkView® Rear Back-Up Camera and ParkView Front- and Rear-Park Assist are standard for all trim levels. There's a Tire-Pressure Monitor as well as a Tire-Fill Alert feature. Every Highlander also gets an Active Lane-Management System as well as Blind-Spot and Cross-Path Detection. The aforementioned Electronic Stability Control and Four-Wheel Traction Control also make for a safer ride.

Like the Highlander, the Grand Cherokee also has child safety locks, safety windows and the LATCH system. Being a Jeep, the Grand Cherokee offers an available Integrated Off-Road Camera. Every Grand Cherokee gets LED Daytime Running Lamps to increase the vehicle's visibility to oncoming traffic. Every model also gets a security alarm to deter would-be thieves.

Which Has the Best Value?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander has a starting price of $35,855. This is the starting cost of an L trim with FWD. Prices of course will go up as optional features and packages are added on to a model. The most expensive Toyota Highlander is the Hybrid Platinum model. It starts out at $51,460. The best value among the Highlander's trim levels is either the LE trim or the Hybrid LE.

The LE and Hybrid LE models have the best balance of starting cost, performance and features. AWD can be added on to either for just a small increase in price. For most buyers, this will be worth it for the increased traction and improved handling that comes with AWD.

The cheapest 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the Laredo model with FWD, and it starts out at $38,325. The slightly larger Grand Cherokee L Laredo starts out at $40,720. The most expensive model is the Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve 4X4. It starts at $67,175. The base model offers excellent value, as it comes with a great amount of standard features. The Overland trim, however, starts at $56,635 and is well worth the increase in price.

The Toyota Highlander has the cheapest model of the bunch, and it's still filled with plenty of convenience and safety features. There's a lot of high-tech stuff here, including driver-assist aids and a fantastic infotainment system. For the best budget buy, the base trim of a Toyota Highlander is a real steal. For a little bit more, the LE models offer the best value of any trim level from either of these two SUVs.

Which Is Better?

We've already established that the 2022 Toyota Highlander offers the best value when compared to the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Highlander also has more room for passengers and significantly more cargo space. The Grand Cherokee offers more available horsepower and far superior off-road performance, but these will cost you more. The Toyota will save owners on fuel costs if selecting a regular engine, however, the Jeep offers the better hybrid model between the two.

Toyota provides the better ride quality on paved roads. Jeep offers better steering, handling and traction. The Toyota has more standard features and superior safety equipment and driver-assist technology. While the Toyota Highlander is the best bargain and wins out in many categories, it's hard to definitively call it the best vehicle. The Jeep Grand Cherokee still does so many things better.

At the end of the day, the Toyota Highlander will be the better buy for most consumers. For those who prioritize horsepower and off-road fun, however, the Jeep Grand Cherokee wins hands down. Still, the Highlander is no slouch in those categories, and for anyone wanting some occasional off-road fun, it's more than adequate. The best model this time depends on the specific needs and expectations of the buyer.
