The Volkswagen Arteon was first introduced in Europe in 2017, and it just became available in the US market last year. Despite its newcomer status, it is quickly gaining the attention of those shopping for a sports sedan.
What's New for 2021?
The Volkswagen Arteon arrived in the United States just in time to get some noticeable interior and exterior updates. For 2021, there is updated infotainment software that also comes with an upgraded touchscreen, and the addition of Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Volkswagen also has a newly updated logo, and it has been added to the latest version of the Arteon, along with an updated front grille.
Other updates include thicker material around the steering wheel, adjustable ambient lighting in the cabin, and upgraded climate controls. The dashboard, including the air vents and surfaces, have been given a facelift. The interior has been redone with upgraded fabrics and leather, along with premium stitching. A digital gauge cluster is now a standard feature, and Kings Red metallic exterior paint is now available across all trim levels. Two additional colors, Lapiz Blue and Oryx White, have been added as exterior color options for the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line trim levels.
Top 10 Reasons to Buy a 2021 Volkswagen Arteon – The Pros
1. Innovative Safety Features
Safety is a main priority with most drivers, and the Arteon does not disappoint in this department. The rear view camera system has a wide lens that ensures you have a full view when backing up. The body of the Arteon is protected by a safety cage, which directs forces away from the passengers and driver in the event of a crash. If the airbags are deployed, the Intelligent Crash Response System unlocks the doors, disables the fuel pump, and turns on the hazards lights. There is also a tire pressure monitoring system, as well as an automatic post collision braking system. For even greater peace of mind, the Arteon also comes with six stability-enhancing systems, which do things like help to protect the vehicle when the driver has to come to a hard stop.
2. The Latest Driver Assistance Features
The Arteon comes with a long list of impressive driver assistance features, including a blind spot monitor, parking and lane assist systems, and area view. Rear traffic alert, park distance control, and adaptive cruise control are additional features that fall into this category.
3. Cutting-Edge Technology
The 8-inch Discover Media touchscreen display is accompanied by the most up-to-date MIB3 entertainment system, which includes voice control. This system can also accommodate multiple smartphones. App-Connect is a feature available with the Arteon, and it allows the apps on your smart phone to appear on the touchscreen display by plugging the phone into one of the ports. With Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, which also includes full-screen navigation, drivers are able to select certain personal settings.
4. Eye-Catching Exterior Style
Many drivers purchase sports sedans for their performance, but they are also very interested in its appearance. Aesthetically, the exterior of the Arteon is beautifully engineered and extremely tasteful. The way that the body has been designed makes it appear to be a coupe, but it has all of the interior space of a sedan, and its classy, refined, and sleek appearance is sure to turn heads on the road. If you are looking for an even sportier appearance, you have the option of choosing one of the R-Line trim levels.
5. You Will Be a Trendsetter
If you are someone who likes to be on the front end of new trends, then the Arteon is a great choice. Because it was just made available in the US last year, drivers in this country are still getting acquainted with this new addition to the car market. Why not be amongst the first to show it off on the road?
6. Specially-Designed Sound System
One of the premier audio companies, Kardon/Harmom, has designed its first special high-end system for automobiles and it is available in the Arteon. It is a 700-watt, 12-speaker system that operates on a 16-channel Ethernet amplifier. It comes pre-programmed with such channels as Live Energy or Chill Out, and it can be programmed to reflect the driver's personal tastes.
7. Transmission With Triptonic Shifting
The transmission that the Arteon comes equipped with is not your run-of-the-mill transmission. This type of transmission offers the best of both worlds by being able to operate as both an automatic and a manual. The driver can operate their vehicle in automatic mode, but they can also switch to manual mode without having to use a clutch. All of this is with the touch of one button.
8. Volkswagen Car-Net
Volkswagen's Car-Net is an app that is available with the Arteon, and it allows you to control certain aspects of your car from your smartphone. This app is the epitome of convenience, and it includes a hot spot, parking information, family guardian alerts, and remote commands.
9. Extensive Cargo Space
The rear hatch is not just for style purposes. Underneath it is a cargo area that measures 27 cubic feet, and expands to 37 cubic feet if you opt to fold the rear seating. This is a welcome feature for anyone who does not want to compromise on storage space. There is enough room back there for multiple suitcases, large pieces of equipment, or anything else that your lifestyle may require.
10. Plenty of Interior Space
Sports sedans are classy and stylish, but they are not always known for providing passengers with comfortable seating and leg room. Volkswagen must have taken note of this, because they made sure that both the driver and passengers have plenty of room to spread out while riding in the Arteon.

Reasons Not to Buy a 2021 Volkswagen Arteon – The Cons
1. Interior Styling is a Disappointment
Volkswagen may have used high-quality materials inside of the Arteon, but in terms of styling, it all comes together to make a pretty underwhelming presentation. When you compare the interior to peers in its class, it just does not measure up. This may be a deal breaker for drivers who want their interior appearance to match that of its stunning exterior.
2. Just An Average Driving Experience
The Arteon comes equipped with a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, but when behind the wheel, it doesn't provide the exhilarating ride that some of its competitors are capable of. It is certainly adequate, but it may not meet the expectations of those looking for a sports sedan.
3. No Hybrid Option
While there is a plug-in hybrid option for the Arteon in the European market, it is not offered here in the US. As drivers become more environmentally conscious, this will prove to be a glaring omission, especially considering that others in its class do offer this option.
How It Stacks Up to the Competition?
2021 Volkswagen Arteon vs. 2021 Kia Stinger
The 2021 Kia Stinger could be tough competition for the 2021 Arteon because it gives drivers more options. It has four trim levels compared to the Arteon three, and drivers can choose between two available engines. This is definitely a relevant selling point considering that some drivers may find the Arteon's only engine option to be lackluster. As far as the interior, the Stinger is nice and comfortable, but it also lacks the finish and design that would place it in the luxury category. Compared to the Stinger, the Arteon has considerably more cargo space. The Stinger performs well during regular driving, but may not be as composed with higher speed numbers. The Stinger also has many of the same driver assist, safety, and technology features available in the Arteon, including the new Harman/Kardon audio system. It even has a similar exterior hatchback appearance.
2021 Volkswagen Arteon vs. 2021 BMW 3-Series
When considering sports sedans, 2021 BMW 3-Series has been the leader of the pack. It provides the exhilarating ride that the Arteon is not able to deliver, and it offers two excellent engine options. There is even a plug-in hybrid option for those intent on driving that type of vehicle. This model no longer comes with a manual transmission option, which is something to think about considering the Arteon's ability to switch between automatic and manual. The 3-Series has 10 less cubic feet of cargo area than the Arteon. The Harman/Kardon audio system is also available with the 3-Series, as is an impressive list of technology, safety, and convenience features. Once equipped for optimal comfort and performance, however, the 2021 3-series gets pretty expensive.
While there are areas that Volkswagen can improve on, the Arteon is still a solid sports sedan that is worthy of serious consideration. More attention to interior styling, as well as engine options and performance, will surely make it a stronger competitor when considering other vehicles in its class. It is important to remember that the Arteon is a very young model, and with continuous attention to improvement, it will only get better.
