2022 Volvo XC60 Trim Levels, Configurations & Comparisons.
Volvo is known for its reliability and quality. The XC60 is its mid-size offering in the SUV lineup. It has two rows of seats and a spacious cargo area in the back. It treats passengers to many high-end amenities and a smooth ride. With this model, Volvo offers a complete package.
This SUV first came out several years ago. Over time, it's been modernized in many ways. It's recently received a slightly different grille, front bumper, and wheel designs, and it now features advanced technology and multiple driver-assist systems.
Several high-tech components have been tweaked a bit for the 2022 model year. Monitoring systems have more sensitivity, for instance, and instead of using the Sensus program for the infotainment system, Volvo has chosen to go with a Google Android-based interface. This type of software allows for some personalization, gives people access to a voice-activated assistant, and comes standard with navigation through Google Maps.
Those who follow Volvo will notice that the XC60 powertrains have been renamed for the 2022 model year. There are still the same trims, which are the Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, but the terminology used to describe the powertrains has changed.
Instead of using the T5 and T6 designations to describe SUVs with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, Volvo is using the terms B5 and B6. This reflects a change in design, as the powertrains now have a 48-volt hybrid system contributing to their power delivery. It's a mild system that improves performance and efficiency.
There's a plug-in hybrid as well, and that's called the Recharge. The Recharge is a much newer version of the XC60, and it gives consumers a nice alternative to a traditional vehicle.
Compare the Momentum vs R-Design. What is the difference?
Before starting off with a specific trim-by-trim comparison, the available powertrains need to be discussed. The B5 powertrain uses a turbocharged two-liter engine and can be matched with a front-wheel or all-wheel drivetrain. In years past, having all-wheel drive would be associated with having more power, but now, horsepower and torque remain the same regardless of whether the B5 has FWD or AWD. The B5 FWD and B5 AWD come with 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
Thanks to a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, the B6 powertrain is more responsive and more powerful. It can make 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It's exclusively paired with an all-wheel drivetrain. With a B6 system, it takes just under six seconds to go from zero to 60 miles per hour. In comparison, the B5 powertrain can do the same in about six and a half seconds.
This is all important to know because the Momentum is only offered with a B5 powertrain. The R-Design, on the other hand, is available with either the B5 or B6 powertrain.
Even though the Momentum doesn't have the same potential as the R-Design, it still feels refined. On its exterior, it has auto-folding heated side mirrors and a panoramic moonroof that comes with a power sunshade. The bright aluminum trim surrounding the windows stands out, as does the chrome frame around the front grille. There are different design options for the 18-inch wheels.
The Momentum, like the other models, has LED lights. The LED front fog lights are useful in times of low visibility as well as when turning, as they provide some extra illumination. In addition, the door handles offer a soft illumination that welcomes people at night.
Inside the cabin of the Momentum, there are a lot of sophisticated features. The rearview mirror can automatically dim if it sense bright lights, there are aluminum Volvo tread plates, and there's a memory system built into the driver's seat. Both front seats are power-adjustable.
This entry-level trim doesn't have everything that a buyer with refined tastes might be looking for, though. Unlike the higher trims, it doesn't have heated front seats, a HomeLink system, or ambient lighting. On the R-Design, there are all of those features, and more.
The R-Design has a mix of Nappa leather, leatherette, and textile in its seating upholstery. In contrast, the Momentum only has a premium textile upholstery. Further, while the Momentum has two-zone automatic climate control, the R-Design has automatic climate control with four different zones. Another convenient components is the R-Design's rear armrest that can fold down from the center seatback when it's not in use.
This mid-level trim has a sporty aesthetic. It rides on 19-inch wheels and has numerous gloss black exterior accents. It has a bold look with a charcoal headliner, sport pedals, and a sport leather gear shifter.
In addition to this, it takes comfort and convenience to the next level. The seats are very supportive, and the front ones have four-way power-lumbar adjustment instead of two-way power-lumbar adjustment, which is what's found in the Momentum. Those front seats also have power cushion extensions, and the front-passenger seat has a memory program as well. In the back of the R-Design, the rear head restraints can be folded down with the push of a button. This can be used to enhance sightlines when no one is riding in the second row.
Both trims have a generous amount of advanced safety components. They come standard with rear park assist, a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. All of these make it easier for the driver to stay aware of what he or she may not be able to see. Additionally, the XC60 can keep itself centered in a lane, read road signs and display that information as a reminder to the driver, and hit the brakes if it seems like a frontal collision is imminent.
The only way in which the R-Design has been upgraded over the Momentum in terms of safety is that it has front park assist. This can be useful when trying to maneuver in tight parking spots.
In regards to technology, the XC60 is nicely equipped. A 12-inch information display shows key data to the driver and is conveniently located behind the steering wheel. There's a large touchscreen strategically placed within easy reach of the driver. As mentioned previously, it uses Google technology. It basically feels like a smartphone or tablet. Wireless charging, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM are all standard.
The audio system on the Momentum is pretty solid. It's a 220-watt system with ten speakers. On the R-Design, the audio package is upgraded to a 600-watt system with 14 speakers, one of which is an air-ventilated subwoofer.
Compare the R-Design vs Inscription Trims. What is the difference?
The Inscription has much in common with the R-Design. It has 19-inch wheels as well, but its design choices are slightly different. It has the same type of four-zone climate control system as the R-Design does, and it comes with the same type of technology and safety components.
There are some stylistic changes when moving from the R-Design to the Inscription. Think of the Inscription as a more exclusive model while the R-Design is dynamic and athletic. With this in mind, it makes sense that the Inscription doesn't have the same type of black accents as found in the R-Design. The Inscription's roof rails are bright aluminum rather than black, and it has bright aluminum surrounding its windows.
With this trim, the seating is upgraded even more. The Inscription benefits from having heated and ventilated front seats instead of just heated seats. Those seats also have power-adjustable side bolsters to provide more support. The seating material is made out of Nappa leather, and it doesn't have any leatherette or textile like the R-Design does.
Another thing to note is that the Inscription has a leather steering wheel. The lower trims have steering wheels wrapped in synthetic material.
One last upgrade on the Inscription is its gear selector. It's made out of a genuine, solid crystal that was handcrafted by Swedish glass artisans. Jewelry is, of course, completely not necessary to have in a vehicle, but it sure makes an impact.
Compare the Inscription vs Recharge. What is the difference?
Moving to the Recharge involves transitioning to a different type of powertrain. It uses a T8 system that comes standard with electric on-demand all-wheel drive. The Recharge, like the B6 powertrain, uses a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The difference is that it also relies on a set of electric motors.
With all of these elements working together, net horsepower is 455 and torque is 494 pound-feet. After being stopped, it can reach a speed of 60 miles per hour in only 4.9 seconds. Clearly, the Recharge wins in the performance category.
There are actually several different XC60 Recharge SUVs available. The Recharge Inscription is exactly the same as the regular Inscription, but with different type of equipment under its hood. The Recharge R-Design has the stylistic elements that the regular R-Design has.
There is one other Recharge version called the Polestar Engineered. This is considerably more expensive than all of the other XC60 models, and it has a number of exclusive amenities. To start, it has advanced shock absorbers to enhance grip when cornering, and it has high-quality Akebono brakes.
On the Recharge Polestar Engineered, there can either be 21-inch or 22-inch wheels. It has a special front grille to help it look a cut above the others.
It benefits from more safety features, including a 360-degree surround view camera and parking sensors all around it. The other Recharge models have front and rear parking sensors but none on their sides. Pilot Assist is included with the Polestar Engineered as well, and it's kind of like a self-driving program that can provide steering support and can make adjustments to speed.
There's also a head-up display that shows key information in the driver's field of vision. Instead of having to look down at the odometer or navigation screen, someone can keep looking straight ahead and get visual cues. The brightness of the display is adjusted automatically depending on the lighting conditions, and there is some level of customization available.
Other advantages found in the Recharge Polestar Engineered are a heated steering wheel, advanced air cleaner, headlight cleaning system, and heated rear seats. The audio system uses Bowers & Wilkins components for a clean, crisp sound. The team at Volvo did an excellent job of thinking of tiny aspects that could affect the driving experience and figuring out ways to make them even better.
The Polestar Engineered can be considered a more advanced version of the R-Design rather than the Inscription. As such, it doesn't have the crystal gear selector knob, leather seats, or ventilated front seats.
Which Trim to Choose?
If someone really wants to drive a plug-in hybrid to reduce fuel consumption, the base version of the XC60 Recharge would be the smart choice. After all, the Volvo XC60 comes standard with so many benefits that even its entry-level trim feels very luxurious. The extra features on the higher Recharge models might not be worth their additional costs, especially considering that the plug-in hybrid technology itself is going to add a lot to the XC60's starting price.
Many consumers, though, may choose to stick to the regular powertrain. It does have a mild hybrid system working for it, but it doesn't require any charging. Choosing one of these models can end up saving consumers a considerable amount of money. This makes the Inscription trim seem more reasonable from a financial perspective.
In this case, the Inscription would be the recommended model. Importantly, it's available with the stronger B6 powertrain and comes standard with all-wheel drive. It offers heating and ventilation as well as enhanced support, and its full leather upholstery may be hard to pass up by potential buyers looking for luxury vehicles. Finally, jewelry is never a requirement, but the crystal gear selector greatly enhances the overall style of this trim and is symbolic of the overall quality of this XC60.
