BMW Price Guides:
BMW M5 Overview:

The BMW M5 has been a desirable sports car for enthusiasts since it was introduced in 1988. It has been known as an exceptional four-door car that provides a high level of performance and handling. The 2018 BMW M5, part of the eighth generation of this model that began in 2018, is no exception. The current iteration of the M5 is the most powerful and best overall version of the vehicle to date.

The main goal of the BMW M5 engineers was to create a high-performance car while keeping it effortless to drive. The transmission shifts are smooth and rapid, and the acceleration curve is smooth and predictable. The car is easy to control in difficult situations. Overall, there are few vehicles on the market with the combination of luxury and performance that the M5 provides.

What’s New for 2019?

The 2019 BMW M5 now offers a Competition trim upgrade that has slightly higher speed and improved handling. The standard M5 comes with Apple smartphone integration that is available with a prescription. The new generation of M5 that was created in 2018 carries changes over into the new models.

Performance and Handling

The M5 is famous for being a high-performance sedan, and this year the carmaker has pulled out all the stops with a turbocharged 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine that produces a whopping 600 horsepower at a torque level of 553 lb.-ft. The 8-speed automatic transmission does an admirable job of putting the torque to the wheels.

The acceleration of the 2019 BMW M5 delivers on its namesake by producing unparalleled thrust. Drivers are catapulted from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.2 seconds, which is very impressive for a 4,300-lb sedan. It even edges out it's rival from the Mercedes-Benz company.

With the optional carbon-ceramic brakes, the M5 delivers equally-impressive braking power, stopping from 60 mph in only 99 feet when equipped with summer tires. The weight and feel of the brakes are well-matched to the performance of the car. The M5 has accurate steering, delivering just the right response in each of the drive modes. It requires very little effort with the wheel to keep the M5 on a straight line on the highway.

The 2019 BMW M5 has great handling that provides outstanding drivability from day to day. The all-wheel drive seems to keep the car glued to the road, yet it seems to enhance the agility of the car rather than detract from it. The option of switching to rear-wheel drive still provides a balanced driving feel.

The menu systems and controls on the 2019 BMW M5 are intuitive and easy to configure. The 2019 version of BMW iDrive has a lot of features, and it's easy to use with a handy touchscreen for input. The M5 provides a wireless integration with smartphone Android and Apple apps. The navigation is controlled via a 10.2-inch touchscreen interface.

Adaptive cruise control maintains speed admirably in various situations, and the lane keep assistance does its job well. The M5 stays in the center of the road in a way that inspires confidence. The Harmon Kardon audio system has 16 speakers for good fidelity and immersiveness.

Interior and Comfort

The 2019 BMW M5 provides comfort that matches its outstanding performance. The front seats keep passengers firmly in place through corners, which is partly made possible by the adjustable seatback bolsters. The comfort of the seats is enhanced by ventilation and massage features. The ride of the car is adjustable for different levels of comfort and performance. In the comfort mode, the M5 delivers as promised. In more aggressive driving modes, the ride comfort is still acceptable.

The noise level inside the M5 is appropriate for a luxury sedan, but you are still able to hear the sporty sound of the engine. The eight-cylinder engine produces a low growl that is audible with the windows up. The sound is more impressive when the car is in Sport Plus driving mode. For normal commute driving, the climate control system easily maintains a comfortable temperature.

The trunk space is plentiful, and its shape makes it easy to stow various types of luggage and items. The rear seats fold in various configurations to accommodate more cargo when needed.

Trim Levels and Upgrades

The two trim options for the 2019 BMW M5 are either standard or Competition. Both trim packages come with the 600-horsepower 4.4-liter V8 and the power is delivered via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The standard trim comes with nineteen-inch wheels, a carbon-fiber roof, LED headlights and power front seats with 20 adjustments. There is also a head-up display that shows instrument gauge data on the windshield. The front seats and steering wheel have heating capability. There is also standard safety technology that helps with lane departure, collision avoidance and blind spot awareness.

The Competition version of the M5 delivers slightly higher speed with 617 horsepower that propels drivers from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. The extra power is mostly due to a higher top-end rev speed to 5,860 rpm. The Competition adds an exhaust mode for sportier sound that is louder and more intimidating than the standard exhaust. The competition suspension is slightly stiffer than the standard M5, and other tuning to suspension further enhances the firmness in handling.

There are many other enhancement packages available to upgrade both trim levels of the M5. The Driving Assistance Plus package gives drivers several onboard safety technology features, and the Executive package adds many luxury accommodations that enhance the climate control, improve the seat comfort and many other features. The audio system can be upgraded to a high-end Bowers & Wilkins system with 16 speakers, and the top speed can be modified by the Driver's package up to 189 mph.

How to Calculate The Dealer Cost of a BMW M5:

Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:

  • Example: Base BMW M5 invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
  • What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.

Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here.)

Note: All BMW M5 Prices above are approximate amounts. Prices are subject to change without notice.

A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
