The 2019 Cadillac ATS comes with cutting-edge features that make other compact luxury coupes look behind the times. It's not a practical choice for everyone due to the small trunk and tiny interior, but the ATS still stands out.
This year's ATS is more than just a looker, though. You get the choice of a four-cylinder turbo or a V6 engine, for example. You'll also get comfortable seats and a quiet cabin on the highways. There are even two suspension choices that give you a drive commonly found on European sports coupes.
It has its oddities, too. You lose some function with the Cadillac because of how small it is, and the base engine sounds raspy at top speeds. It's an easy choice to grab the V6 engine upgrade. The touchscreen is better this year, but it still has much of the same awkwardness as when it first debuted.
It's hard to make it in this already crowded segment, but the 2019 Cadillac ATS manages to get a foothold thanks to its generous list of features.
What's New for 2019?
Cadillac first introduced the ATS six years ago, and it hasn't made any significant changes since then. The 2019 Cadillac ATS is part of this first generation. This year, the only real difference is the loss of manual transmission.
A luxury coupe capable of seating four, the 2019 Cadillac ATS comes with plenty of features right at the base level.
Still, it's worth starting your search right at the Premium Luxury level, and the six-cylinder engine it provides. It's just as fuel efficient, but it sounds and works better than anything else.
There are four trim levels for the ATS: the base trim, the Luxury, the Premium Luxury, and the Premium Performance.
The lower two trims have a four-cylinder turbo engine capable of generating 272 horses and 295 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with power delivered to the rear wheels. You can upgrade to all-wheel drive.
The upper two trims have a 3.6L V6 engine good for 335 horses and 285 pound-feet of torque. Premium Performance can't upgrade to all-wheel drive, but it's still an option on Premium Luxury.
On the base, you get a rearview camera for safety, OnStar services with a Wi-Fi hotspot, and keyless ignition and entry for convenience. For an added touch of luxury, you get faux leather upholstery and a Bose sound system. The 8-inch touchscreen display can integrate with your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Going up to the Luxury trim gets you a heated steering wheel, parking sensors for the front and rear, and driver-seat memory functions. Beyond that, you can choose a 110-volt power outlet and navigation upgrades.
With the Premium Luxury trim, you get exclusive 18-inch wheels and the contents of the Safety and Security package. Also, you get wipers that can sense rain, a sunroof, and adaptive high beams.
Finally, you can get the Premium Performance trim for all the features mentioned above as standard. Besides these features, you get adaptive suspension dampers, a suspension tuned for sporty driving, and a power-adjustable steering column.
All 2019 Cadillac ATS trims come with Teen Driver features as well. This allows you to set limits for younger drivers on their own. For example, you can restrict audio before the driver and front seat passenger have buckled their seatbelts. You'll also receive notifications about overspeeding or panic-stop events as soon as they happen.
For too long, certain competitors have dominated the luxury sport coupe class, but Cadillac has become a sleeper hit in this segment. This year's ATS 3.6 Coupe is competitive both in the city and on the highway, and that's even before you upgrade to the ATS-V.
From a standstill, the 2019 Cadillac ATS reaches 60 miles per hour in exactly six seconds. After this point, the thrust starts to fall, but you'll get enough power to pass others on the highway. If provoked, the tires will light up. Adding the Sport Exhaust gives you more control when working with a full load.
To get the best performance out of your brakes, it's worth looking into the Slotted Rotor and Performance Brake Pad option, though it doesn't come cheap. Still, it's a good choice for city life, too. It takes 109 feet to come to a complete stop from 60 miles per hour.
Driving around town is a little vague at best. The steering responds with little effort, but it doesn't feel darty. Opting into Sport mode gives you more heft, but you don't have any clearer an idea what the tires are doing down below. It's a little more slippery than other luxury coupes.
The 2019 Cadillac ATS is nimble and quick both on the road and on the track. It's a trustworthy ride you have plenty of control over and can predict.
Overall, the ATS is an easy drive, though not without its quirks. For the most part, the auto transmission is smooth, but the actual changes to gears are slower than you may anticipate. The engine's auto stop-start is measurable, but you'll still enjoy a drive around town.
