Chevrolet Price Guides:

In some instances, SUVs and pickup trucks are not the solutions to handle large amounts of inventory. In many cases, a cargo van is required. Not only to ship items back and forth but also to organize tools and other equipment for service businesses. For instance, those who handle plumbing and HVAC repairs.

For these situations the 2020 Chevrolet Express Cargo is needed. Introduced to the market in 1996, this legacy utility vehicle continues to be a mainstay of companies across the United States. Does it still stand up for the current model year?

What's New for 2020?

The Express Cargo hasn't changed much since its introduction a quarter of a century ago. Thus, the changes are minor. In the 2020 model year the only new features come as safety aids. Both lane departure warning and forward collision alert are now available.

Styles and Trims

The 2020 Chevrolet Express Cargo comes in two styles -- The 2500 and 3500. The "trims" for these are not named. Instead, they are the Express' standard wheelbase and extended wheelbase. All styles and trims have rear-wheel-drive (RWD) drivetrains.

Exterior Styling

The 2020 Chevrolet Express Cargo is not to meant to be stylish or redesigned with futuristic angles. It's meant for utility. Thus, its exterior design hasn't changed since its introduction in 1996.

Still, it doesn't mean it looks horrible when driving. The reason for the lack of change is the design continues to work. The 16.5-inch wheels and tires perform the necessary duties to stay on the road, even in tight situations. Daytime headlamps were added in the past to maintain safety.

There are optional packages for business that want to provide an enhanced look. Heated side mirrors can keep views ice free. A chrome grille and wheel cap package gives the Express a sportier look for certain businesses.

Interior Design

The interior of the 2020 Chevrolet Cargo is what someone would expect to see in a cargo van. One row of seating for driver and passenger and lots of space. In fact, the area from the rear door to the seats is approximately 127 inches with the standard wheelbase. The extended wheelbase increases the cargo space to nearly 174 inches.

Audio technology has a mix of old and new. There's a standard AM/FM setup with MP3 and USB compatibility. Though there isn't a touchscreen available, the Express Cargo is wired for a built-in 4G LTE wireless hotspot. This allows the driver and passenger to navigate and stream through their smartphones.

Performance

Though the exterior and interior are standard, the powertrain for the 2020 Chevrolet Express Cargo is not. Both styles and trims have four engine options available. The standard is a 4.3L six-cylinder direct inject model with automatic transmission. It has 276 horsepower and close to 300 pound-feet of torque.

Two 6.0-liter V8 engines are available as well. The standard and E85 versions of this powertrain both get a maximum horsepower of 343 and torque of 373. The last option, a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel turbo, gets 181hp and 363 lb. ft. of torque. With all models, the maximum towing capacity equals over four tons.

Quality and Comfort

The 2020 Chevrolet Express Cargo makes sure the driver and passenger are comfortable in their journeys. There's an option for a six-way power adjustable driver seat with head restraints. The front console is designed to store important items and allow the driver to easily reach the shifter. The rear-view mirror automatically dims for nighttime driving.

Safety

The 2020 Chevrolet Express Cargo contains enough standard and optional safety options to keep both occupants and inventory safe. Standards on every style and trim are airbags, anti-lock brakes, and the company's electronic stability and traction control system known as StabiliTrak. Also standard across all styles and trims is OnStar, General Motors communication system that can alert authorities to any accidents.

Driver assist aids are optional on the Express Cargo. Nevertheless, the vehicle has an impressive set of them. They include lane assist, rear park assist, blind zone alert, and lane departure warning. All of these are important to the safety of a cargo van with limited visibility. The only safety aid that is standard is a rear-view camera.

Fuel Economy

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn't measure fuel efficiency for commercial vehicles like cargo vans. Nevertheless, the average miles per gallon on these types of vehicles has been in the high teens while driving in the city and low 20s on the highway. Luckily, the van has a 31-gallon tank, so drivers can travel far before a fill-up.

Conclusion

The 2020 Chevrolet Express Cargo van is what businesses need to get their inventory from one place to another. With multiple engine options, a chance to extend the wheelbase, and tools to maintain a driver's safety and comfort, it continues a standard it established in the mid-1990s.

How to Calculate The Dealer Cost of a Chevrolet Express Cargo Van:

Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:

  • Example: Base Chevrolet Express Cargo Van invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
  • What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.

Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here.)

Note: All Chevrolet Express Cargo Van MSRP, invoice and dealer cost dollar figures above are approximate amounts. Prices are subject to change without notice.

A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
