How to Calculate The Dealer Cost of a Chevrolet Malibu
Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:
- Example: Base Chevrolet Malibu invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of all the options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
- What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.
Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here)
The Chevrolet Malibu has defied the odds by remaining a popular sedan option. This can be partially credited to the iconic style of this vehicle and partially credited to its spacious and versatile cabin. Anyone who is looking for a midsize sedan to get around in should take the time to learn more about the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu.
What's New for 2022?
The 2022 Malibu is part of the ninth generation of the vehicle, which premiered in 2016. This year, the big news is the discontinuation of the old entry-level L trim. Now, the LS is the base model. On the one hand, this means that the Malibu has even more standard equipment than ever before. On the other hand, it has a higher starting price. Elsewhere, an electronic parking brake has become standard for the 2022 Malibu.
There are now a total of four trim levels for the Malibu, and all but the top Premier have a turbo 1.5L four-cylinder engine underneath the hood. It creates 160-horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Paired to this engine is a continuously variable transmission. Front-wheel drive is the only option.
For the top trim, the Malibu goes with a turbo 2.0L four-cylinder. This model can make a more satisfying 250-horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. For this engine, Chevrolet gives the 2022 Malibu a nine-speed automatic transmission. Like the base engine, this one can only be paired with front-wheel drive.
When sticking with the base engine, the 2022 Malibu is estimated to get 29mpg in the city and 36mpg on the highway. These numbers are right around average for the class. The more powerful engine is estimated to get 22mpg in the city and 33mpg on the highway. It is worth noting that the more powerful engine requires premium gasoline.
When it comes to standard safety features, the 2022 Malibu has a rather short list. The entry-level LS is equipped with a rearview camera and a teen driver program. It also has the "Buckle to Drive" feature that will prevent the Malibu from shifting out of park for 20 seconds if the driver is not buckled up.
In order to get any driver aids, buyers will have to add one of the many packages that are available. Even the entry-level LS is eligible for the Driver Confidence I Cloth package, which consists of rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Driver Confidence I & II package will also add a lane departure warning and a pre-collision braking system.
The top Premier model can add the Enhanced Driver Confidence package. It is home to adaptive cruise control and a park assist feature. That package also includes the contents of the Driver Confidence I & II package.
The list of standard tech features for the 2022 Malibu is more impressive. It includes an 8-inch touchscreen, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the wireless variations of both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A six-speaker audio system comes standard as well. Starting with the LT, satellite radio is included.
Once again, the Premier model takes things to the next level with an 8-inch digital driver display and navigation. This model also has a premium Bose sound system and an extra charge-only USB port. Rounding out the tech upgrades found here is a wireless charging pad that helps to keep the cabin of the Malibu free of cords.
The 2022 Malibu features two spacious rows of seating. Headroom and legroom are excellent in the front and satisfactory for adults in the back. When it comes to cargo space, the Malibu offers up 15.7 cubic feet in the trunk, which is right around average. It is possible to fold down the back seats for more room, but doing so will leave drivers with an uneven load floor that reduces the practicality of the space.
Overall, the 2022 Malibu has an upscale look inside the cabin. Cloth upholstery is standard and select models upgrade to genuine leather. While the seats are comfortable in general, some people may find that they lack enough padding for longer drives. Depending on the model, the Malibu can be equipped with luxurious upgrades such as heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear outboard seats.
The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu proves why this vehicle is one of the few sedans still standing. Anyone who needs a comfortable commuter that doubles as a family car should schedule a test drive.

A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
