In past years, the Chevy Malibu has been known for its roominess and comfort, and it was pretty stylish to boot. It made the drive from point A to point B somewhat fun and painless. But now, the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu becomes an even more refined and dynamic vehicle.
To catch up with the rest of the segment barreling towards better fuel economy, Chevy has equipped the new Malibu's 1.5L turbo engine with a CVT. While this did increase the combined mileage by 2 mpg, it came at the expense of feedback for the driver. The Malibu handles sharply, but everything else falls flat.
The Infotainment System 3 also comes in every Malibu, and it's pleasant to use. Still, it's a big, bright spot that stands out in what is otherwise drearily dull cabin. Likewise, headroom and rear legroom haven't improved at all.
Another problem is that the base trim doesn't have safety features that nearly all other competitors offer. Likewise, only the highest Malibu trim even gives you a chance the upgrade to the complete suite of driver assistance.
The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu isn't a bad car by any stretch, but it doesn't rank higher than average for the segment. The class competition simply has more to offer for comparable prices. For that matter, for the cost of the top tiers, you could dip your toes into entry-level luxury cars instead.
Though it is part of the ninth 2016 generation, the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu underwent a few changes. For example, there is new styling for the front and rear, an improved infotainment system, and a new transmission for the 1.5L turbocharged engine.
The Malibu is a modern midsize sedan that could stand to offer more features at the base level.
As such, it's worth looking into the LT trim with the Driver Confidence package installed for everything you would expect from the segment. It's also the cheapest way to get access to valuable safety features, though you won't get them all; the only way to do that is to get the Driver Confidence II package.
You might find the Hybrid actually drives better than the turbo engine. The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid has the same equipment but, for a small premium, you get a more pleasant, fuel-efficient drive.
There are five choices for 2019 Chevrolet Malibu trims: the L, the LS, the LT, the RS, and the Premier. Except for the Premier, all Malibus come with a 1.5L four-cylinder turbo engine and a CVT automatic. Together, they generate 160 horses and 184 lb-ft of torque.
The L trim comes with an upgraded infotainment system, keyless entry and ignition, smartphone integration, 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, and a six-speaker audio system. For safety, there is a backup camera and OnStar service.
For a small price increase, the LS swaps steel wheels for alloy. It also adds the Teen Driver system by CHevy, as well as a 4G LTE connection and laminated windows.
Dual exhaust tips help give the RS its sporty look, as do the black 18-inch wheels and spoiler. For added luxury, you will get a steering wheel wrapped in leather and blacked-out trim accents for the body.
With the LT, you get all the features available on the LS plus satellite radio, two-zone climate control, 17-inch wheels, heated front seats, and reading lamps for the rear seats.
The Hybrid pairs an electric motor with a 1.8L four-cylinder, producing 277 lb-ft and 182 hp. It's just like the LT, but with a few changes, such as heated seats and an electronic parking brake.
Finally, the top-tier Premier trim also comes with everything available on the LT along with everything from the Leather, Convenience, and Technology packages. You get a beefier engine too, plus a nine-speed auto transmission and a wealth of other features.
At the expense of performance, the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu offers a comfortable ride over long distances. Still, it has exceptional handling and the option to add an advanced hybrid powertrain.
If you stick with the 1.5L engine, it will never perform better than adequately. Drivers looking for a little more kick from their engines will want to get the 2.0L engine from the Premier. The acceleration from the hybrid makes it feel more like a pure EV than any other hybrid on the market does. You'll only remember the gas engine exists when you're climbing hills or speeding hard.
The brake pedal is predictable when you're driving around town if perhaps a bit unyielding. A Malibu equipped with the standard engine stops in 113 feet from 60 miles per hour, which is fantastic for the segment.
You won't get much feedback from the steering, and it's a little rubbery when starting turns. However, it's just responsive enough to give you the confidence you need in such a heavy vehicle.
Even though it's not designed as a sporty vehicle, the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu handles turns with greater athleticism than the rest of its class. If you push the all-season tires, you'll be punished with loud squealing, though.
The standard CVT also suffers from feeling rubbery, and there are measurable delays at certain points. The hybrid version is a much smoother experience, especially if you are traveling in the city.
