2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Overview:
Are you thinking about buying a brand-new, high-powered pick-up truck this year? If so, you might want to consider taking the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD for a test drive. This full-size pickup has multiple configurations and basically everything you need to get the job done right. The diesel engine option gives the most bang for your buck, although all of the 3500HD's engines are packed with power. While the brakes do not feel very secure, all other aspects of the truck's driving performance make it difficult to pass up.

What's New For 2018?

A few important changes have been made to the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, including the standardization of a 7-inch LCD touchscreen display and a rearview camera. A new grille design now comes on the Z71 and High Country trim levels, and several new external color palettes are available. Also, tire fill alert is now available on the tire pressure monitoring feature.

Available Styles

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is available as a full-size heavy-duty pickup truck. There are three different cab styles (standard, cab, and double) and a standard, short, or long bed. You can also choose between available rear- or four-wheel drive.

Available Trims

The 3500HD has four different trim levels to choose from. Each one comes with a base 6.0-L V8 engine, which is matched up with a 6-speed automatic transmission and generates 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. You can opt for a higher-powered 6.6-L turbodiesel V8, which gets 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque or a bi-fuel add-on to the 6.0-L. The base Work Truck (WT) trim comes with a standard 7-pin wiring harness and sits atop 18-inch wheels. It also features power locks and vinyl upholstery. The LT trim adds a remote-locking tailgate, remote locks, and cloth upholstery. The LTZ trim features chic leather upholstery, remote start, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Sitting at the top of the line-up is the High Country, which adds numerous driver aids, side assist steps, and wireless charging for smartphones.

Driving Impressions

The massive 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is best powered by the 6.6-L turbodiesel V8. This engine is able to get the 3500HD from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 7.7 seconds. However, the brakes on the 3500HD will go all the way to the floor when you make a panic stop. Still, the stopping distance is relatively safe and slightly better than what you get in the 2500HD. The tires and steering wheel feel a bit disconnected, but when you're driving straight, the truck feels solid as a rock. Handling is surprisingly easy for such a large vehicle, and you can mitigate tight turns and parking spots relatively well. If you want something you can really off-road in, though, the 3500HD won't cut it. The 2500HD with the Z71 package is a better option in that regard since the 3500HD doesn't get enough ground clearance or have a suspension tuned for off-roading.

Fuel Economy

You likely are not buying a 3500HD in order to get excellent fuel economy. The 3500HD gets a real-world fuel economy of just about 13 mpg combined and about 16 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, this does not beat the competition, as the Ram 3500 can easily get a combined mpg of 16. Still, if you opt for the diesel engine, you are making a smart choice in terms of power.

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is not the most capable off-roader and doesn't get the best fuel economy in its class, but it is superb when it comes to towing and has an acceleration that other full-size pickups struggle to match.

How to Calculate The Dealer Cost of a Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:

  • Example: Base Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of all the options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
  • What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.

Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here)

Note: All Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD MSRP, invoice and dealer cost dollar figures above are approximate amounts. Prices are subject to change without notice.

A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
