Considering how popular crossovers have become in the last few years, it makes sense that Ford will stop focusing on its sedans and hatchbacks from now on. In one of the best exiting hurrahs, the 2019 Ford Fiesta is surprisingly one of the best subcompact cars for sale.

When it comes to small vehicles, it's critical that they don't run too high a price. This year's Fiesta doesn't disappoint, starting you off with a budget-friendly base and adding several features on the way up.

At the top of the line, the 2019 Ford Fiesta offers an experience that hardly any other subcompacts can parallel. Sure, the base Fiesta is still fun to drive, but the top-tier ST might be the best subcompact in decades. It's not a cheap upgrade, but the performance you gain demands it.

Indeed, some subcompacts offer more cargo and legroom, but the sheer personality of the Fiesta could make the difference. If you want a small car but want something more than the bare minimum, be sure to grab the Fiesta during its final year of production.

What's New for 2019?

The 2019 Ford Fiesta is part of the first and only Fiesta generation introduced eight years ago. This year, the S and Titanium trims for the hatchback are gone, replaced with the sporty ST. This is the last year Ford will produce Fiestas.

The 2019 Ford Fiesta is a competitively-priced subcompact vehicle. You can get it with a sedan body or as a four-door hatchback.

At the bottom tier, some basic features are missing, like power windows and cruise control. For a small price increase, you can get those features and much more from the SE trim. It also gives you access to the SE Appearance package, which is also worth the cost. With it, you get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as well as improved upholstery and a large touchscreen.

Trims

The 2019 Ford Fiesta sedan comes in the S and SE trims, while the hatchback comes in SE, ST Line, and ST trims. At the base S trim, there is a modest amount of equipment, but not what you would expect from a car in 2019. At the SE level, you'll get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration with the Sync 3 infotainment system. Opting for the top-tier ST trim gets you a powerful turbo engine, a sport-tuned suspension, and the transmission is swapped to manual.

Starting off at the base trim is the S, which a 1.6L four-cylinder engine powers along with a five-speed manual. Together, the powertrain generates 120 horses and 112 lb-ft of torque. Remote locking and unlocking and 60/40-split folding rear seats offer convenience, while power locks, Bluetooth, and 15-inch steel wheels are other standard features. Other adjustment features include a height-adjustable driver's seat and a steering wheel with tilt and telescoping. For tech, there's a six-speaker sound system and a 4.2-inch center display, along with a rearview camera. Only manual windows are available.

Moving up the ladder to the SE will swap the steel wheels with alloy ones and put a rear spoiler on the hatchback body. Additionally, you get improved cloth upholstery, automatic headlights, a metallic-painted interior, and power windows. For even more family safety, you'll get MyKey parental controls.

Buying the Fiesta SE gives you access to the SE Appearance package, which adds an inch to the wheels, improves voice controls, changes the cloth interior, adds a rear spoiler to the sedan body, and adds foglights. Other tech additions include smartphone integration, two USB ports, and the Sync 3 infotainment system, which you can access using a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Whether you get the SE Appearance package or not, you can get black-painted wheels.

Next up is the ST Line hatchback, which has all the features of the SE Appearance package, plus a steering wheel and shift knob wrapped in leather, cloth sports seats exclusive to the trim, and a black-painted spoiler on both bodies. Further, you get dual chrome exhaust tips, mirrors added to the door and roof, and upgrades to improve aerodynamics.

Both the SE and ST Line have access to the Cold Weather package. With it, you get automatic climate control, heated exterior mirrors, and heated driver and front passenger seats.

The ST swaps to a turbo engine, adds yet another inch to the wheels and provides a generous list of features. Plus, you'll have access to the ST Recarco package and the option to add a sunroof.

Driving Impressions

Subcompacts, in general, aren't known for their oomph on the road, and the 2019 Ford Fiesta is no different. It certainly doesn't get any help from the twin-clutch PowerShift. Regardless, the chassis should thrill sporty drivers.

At no point does the 1.6L four-cylinder engine feel powerful. It takes an average of 9.4 seconds to reach 60 miles per second from zero, which is typical for its class.

Likewise, the panic-stop braking distances are average for a subcompact. In the city, the pedals are intuitive and easy to modulate.

With a thick-rimmed, easy-to-grip steering wheel, the 2019 Fiesta primes you for a sporty drive. Steering is quick and provides plenty of feedback so you won't struggle to merge on the highway or turning corners.

In fact, turns are where the Fiesta truly stand out. Ford tuned the suspension so well that it's plain fun to drive on winding roads.
