The 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD is one of those trucks that delivers on a specific niche. That niche is when you need to haul a heavy load while also hauling six passengers in comfort that is typically found in luxury SUVs. This year, there isn't much change to the 2500HD.
That's still good news because it means you get to pick between the reliable 6.0L V8 or the even-more-powerful 6.6L turbodiesel. The payload capacity tops out at over 3,200 pounds, and you can still haul well over 14,000 pounds for extensive capabilities. They're not industry-leading numbers, but they're pretty close. You won't find yourself lacking.
Besides its ability to tow nearly anything, the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD comes with a very appealing and spacious cabin, which contains benefits like an intuitive infotainment system with smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also, it comes with much of the active driver assists you would come to expect for this segment, like forward collision warning, parking sensors, and warning in case of lane departure.
Once upon a time, the Sierra was one of the only heavy-duty trucks that offered any frills or luxury for the cabin, but the other automakers are starting to catch up with GMC. Despite the increase in segment competition, the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD is definitely worth considering for your next massive truck.
What's New for 2019?
GMC introduced the third Sierra HD generation for the 2014 production year, and the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD is part of that line.
This year, you cannot get the regular-cab 2500HD. Likewise, the short-bed Double Cab is no longer available. Otherwise, there are no other significant changes to report.
The 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD comes in two cab options: double cab or crew cab. You can also choose the 6-foot-5 standard bed or the 8-foot-2 long bed. The crew cab is the only choice available for the SLT and the Denali trims. In all cases, you can choose between two- and four-wheel drive.
There are four 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD trim choices:
At the base trim, you get the 6.0L V8 engine good for 360 horses and 380 pound-feet, coupled with a six-speed transmission that delivers the power to 17-inch steel wheels. The steering wheel tilts but doesn't telescope, and the seats can fold down for added cargo space. Additionally, there's an automatic-locking rear differential, power door locks, and cruise control.
Further up the trim is where you get a choice to switch the engine. The other alternative is the 6.6L V8 turbodiesel, good for 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. You can also include a bi-fuel addition to the 6.0L.
The SLE sits on 17-inch alloy wheels, upgrades the 7-inch touchscreen to an 8-inch, tints the rear windows, adds LED cargo illumination, and features remote keyless entry.
Higher up on the trim ladder is the SLT, which comes in a crew-cab configuration and adds an inch to the wheels. Also, you'll get dual-zone auto climate control, power-folding mirrors, a 110-volt household power outlet, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and leather upholstery.
The Denali trim is where you'll find the most upscale features. Here, you'll get 20-inch wheels, a Bose sound system, a navigation system, a spray-in bedliner, defogger, and parking sensors on the front and rear. The steering wheel has heating features as well.
Other options, depending on the trim, include a bed storage box, a rear-seat entertainment system, different axle ratios, and the Driver Alert package. This package contains a safety-alert driver seat, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and parking sensors for the front and rear.
The Z71 suspension package gets you unique styling tweaks along with skid plates and hill descent control. The SLT gets access to the All Terrain HD package, which has the Z71 suspension, a skid plate, off-road tires, and a heated steering wheel.
Equipping the Sierra with the 6.6L diesel V8 rewards you with impressive acceleration and respectable towing numbers. The braking and steering don't inspire the same amount of confidence, but it's still easy to control the 2500HD in the ways that matter.
The diesel is suitable for producing enormous torque and plenty of power, giving it the oomph it needs to get moving fast. It takes 7.7 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill. Driving around town results in more reserved acceleration, but there's still good enough power to help you merge onto the highway.
As mentioned above, the brakes on the 2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD offer little confidence. The pedal reaches the floor in panic braking circumstances. In the city, you won't have any problems as long as you leave a car or two's worth of distance.
The weighting on the steering is excellent and stable when driving in a straight line, but turns are difficult to judge through tire feedback. That means making a U-turn is no small effort.
Having said that, the massive truck turns well. It doesn't roll unless you're going exceptionally fast. It's also easy to maneuver at parking lot speeds and in narrow spaces.
If you live downtown or around the area, then all 2500 trucks will lack sufficient drivability. Otherwise, you'll find plenty to love with the low-end torque from the turbodiesel. Off-road, there's lots to enjoy, too, especially with the Off-Road Z71 package.
