The 2021 Jeep Gladiator offers something unique among Jeep's lineup. It's the first pickup truck that the automaker has offered since the early 90s. The Gladiator provides the kind of amazing off-road performance that Jeep is known for. It also gives you a bed for hauling and a higher towing capacity than the Jeep Wrangler.
What’s New for 2021?
There are a couple of new special editions of the Gladiator for 2021. There is an 80th Anniversary model and two different Willys packages. The main new addition for this year is an optional diesel engine. Jeep offers a 3.0-liter Turbo-Diesel that produces 260 horsepower and a whopping 442 pound-feet of torque.
Body Styles and Configurations
The 2021 Jeep Gladiator only comes in one body style. This is a four-door truck in Jeep's Crew Cab configuration. It can seat up to five people. The Gladiator has a 5-foot bed length. Every Gladiator offers 4X4 capabilities.
Available Trim Levels:
This base model and all other trims come stock with a 3.6-liter V6 engine. All Gladiators have front- and side-impact airbags. A Rear-Park Assist system, Forward-Collision Warning Plus and Blind-Spot & Cross-Path Detection are optional for all trim levels above the Sport. The Sport has cloth upholstery, manual locks, manual windows and a basic infotainment system with a 5-inch display.
Moving up to the Sport S trim gets you an upgraded infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen display. A navigation system is optional. This system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A premium sound system from Alpine is available at this level as well. The Sport S gets Remote Keyless-Entry and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The Overland is the first trim to offer power locks and windows. Ambient interior lighting adds some class and style to the cabin. Dual-zone climate control will keep you and your passengers comfortable in any weather. The exterior mirrors are heated at this trim level for quick defrosting. The Overland keeps all previous features except where upgrades have been made.
The Mojave trim level has some upgrades for off-road performance. There is extra armor on the bottom of this truck to protect it from rocks and other debris. The suspension system gets an upgrade here. The Mojave gets an electronically controlled, locking rear differential. There is more ground clearance for this trim along with higher fender flares.
The Rubicon offers the best off-road performance available from a 2021 Jeep Gladiator. In addition to the rear locking differential, a locking differential is added up front as well. This trim level gets the Jeep Rock-Trac 4X4 system. This allows for some extreme rock-crawling capabilities. There is plenty of low-end power and torque here to help you get over the roughest terrain.
If the Rubicon is the ultimate in off-road performance, the High Altitude is the ultimate for comfort and luxury. This trim comes with upgraded seats and premium Nappa leather upholstery. The steering wheel and gear shift are wrapped in fine leather as well. This trim gets all of the previously mentioned safety features. It also gets the 8.4-inch touchscreen display and premium audio setup.
Willys Jeeps are an homage to the original military Jeeps of World War II. The Willys Sport has a lot of the same features as the Sport. The Willys model is similar to the Sport S trim. What's different here are some upgraded components to make the Willys versions better off-road performers. There are also unique decals and badges.
The 80th Anniversary model is geared more towards comfort and convenience upgrades. It has all of the top driver-assist technology and a premium infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Like the Willys models, the 80th Anniversary Edition has unique decals and badges.
The stock engine for every trim level of the Gladiator is a 3.6-liter V6 engine. This powertrain can produce 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A Gladiator with this engine can tow up to 4,400 pounds when properly equipped. The available Turbo-Diesel V6 has less horses under the hood but significantly more torque for better hauling, towing and rock crawling. The diesel models can pull up to 6,000 pounds.
The ride quality is good inside of the Gladiator. Steering is accurate and there's a good turning radius here. The suspension system feels the best when you take the Gladiator off of paved roads. In fact, the handling, stability and everything feels better during off-road driving. The robust suspension system, high ground clearance and body under-armor let you know exactly what this truck was built for.
The standard V6 gasoline engine has a combined fuel-economy rating of 19 miles-per-gallon (mpg). Specifically, that's 23 mpg on the highway and 16 mpg in the city. The Turbo-Diesel does a little better at 28 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg in the city.
Drivers who want an off-road machine that's also a practical vehicle should give the Jeep Gladiator a serious look. This truck has some impressive capabilities. That makes it well suited for work duties or just the occasional odd job. It's also an attractive and reliable vehicle that can be used for family transportation.
