Mazda is almost a century old. There aren't too many car companies across the globe that can tout that. Not only have they been around in Japan for 100 years, they've also been in the U.S. market for five decades.
During this time they've produced a variety of vehicles that have won awards for safety and performance. In addition, they have constantly been a lower-cost alternative to other international cars. Including some made in its home country.
One of these is the 2019 Mazda6. Currently, it's one of the best-stocked sedan models the company makes. And, at a starting MSRP of $21,000 and a number of trims, it's a vehicle that's available for all budgets.

What's New for 2019?
The 2019 Mazda6 likes to stay fresh. Thus, for the third time in five years, it has gotten a grill-lift. The exterior styling is smoother with very few sharp edges. The front-end is lower to the ground while the back is slightly angled up. The result is a vehicle that looks more like a sportscar than a four-door sedan.
Another visible change is in the interior. It has a fresher look in either cloth or leather. Two new interior packages have been introduced in the higher-priced models. These feature leather seats and real wood trim.
Under the hood, the 2019 Mazda6 offers a new engine model -- a turbocharged 2.5L, four-cylinder. While it adds a bit more horsepower than the standard engine, it is also less noisy.
Styles and Trims
There is only one style of the 2019 Mazda6 -- four-door sedan. That's fine, because it comes in five different trims. These have a $13,000 price variance depending on what trim is purchase.
The basic model is the Sport. From there, consumers can choose from the Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and the Signature. In order to grab the upgrades, consumers need to level up to higher-cost models.
It's not that the basic Sport is terrible. It has the same styling as the other trims as well as a 2.5L engine that provides high mileage per gallon. It also features a Blind Spot Monitoring package and auto-leveling LED headlights.
The goodies increase as buyers move up to the next trims. The Touring model gives consumers a Radar Cruise Control system while the Grand Touring has a 11-speaker Bose system. When drivers get up to the Signature they receive the extras from the trims below it and items like leather seats.
Power and Performance
The 2019 Mazda6 does not provide a hybrid or electric version. What it does have is a pair of 2.5L, four-cylinder engines -- one of them turbocharged. With a six-speed automatic transmission, both engines provide quick acceleration at higher speeds and a smooth throttle.
The Mazda6 also has many packages that increase the safety of passengers and pedestrians. Actually, they are too many to list here. Besides the standard ABS, some of the options are Dynamic Stability Control, Hill Launch Assist, Rearview camera, and Smart City Brake Support.
Should an accident occur, the Mazda6 is definitely ready. As a five-star crash rating recipient from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), consumers can feel safe for themselves and their passengers. To minimize damage, the Mazda6 comes standard with forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, front and side airbags, and seat belts that limit the tension in an accident situation. Thus, preventing bruises or breaks from the seat belt strain.
Though it doesn't have an alternative engine model in any of its trims, the Mazda6 can certainly compete with hybrids for gas mileage. On the downside, it's a substitute for average horsepower at best.
The Sport and Touring trims get 35 MPG on the highway. However, that could vary. With an engine that only provides 187 hp, acceleration can burn more fuel.
The Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature have that boost in horsepower thanks to their turbocharged engines. Even at 250hp, these Mazda6 trims only lose four MPG on the highway. Unfortunately, they also cost more, and that may not be part of a driver's budget.
Whether or not a consumer purchases 2019 Mazda6 depends on what they want. If safety and mileage outweigh horsepower, they'll look to the lower cost trims. On the other hand, if they want luxury and style but are willing to sacrifice a little MPG loss, then they'll go with the higher-end trims.
Whatever is chosen, they'll be getting a vehicle with 100 years of auto manufacturing behind it.
