The debut of the CLA 250 six years ago promised and delivered little. Responses from the transmission and engine were lazy and sluggish, and the ride quality was harsher than it should have been. Plus, Mercedes-Benz clearly cut corners on the variety of materials at the time to push down that price point. Since then, the CLA has received refinements and upgrades, but they're still not entirely persuasive enough to make your shortlist for entry-level luxury.
Given that the automaker put its focus on affordable sedans elsewhere, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA may not be the best pick for dipping your toes into luxury. It's not as sleek on the inside, and it doesn't perform quite as smoothly.
What's New for 2019?
The automaker first released the CLA six years ago, and the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA is part of that first generation. This year, the AMG CLA 45 has more standard features than in previous years.
There are plenty of features to go around on the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA luxury sedan. The performance it packs makes it worth the price tag, too.
If you're interested in a CLA, it's worth grabbing the Premium package for the blind-spot monitoring, the keyless ignition and entry, and the heated seats. You can safely skip out the Multimedia package, even if you want the smartphone integration; that's available as a standalone. You'll only need to get the AMG CLA 45 if you mainly prioritize performance.
Underneath the hood of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA is a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo engine good for 208 horses and 258 pound-feet. The higher-performance AMG CLA 45 also gets this engine, but tuning allows it to generate 375 hp and 350 pound-feet. In both cases, you get a dual-clutch seven-speed auto. The base trim gets the front-wheel drive with the option to upgrade to 4Matic all-wheel drive, and the AMG comes standard with all-wheel drive.
The CLA sits on 17-inch wheels, permits eight-way power adjustments on the front sports seats, offers two-zone automatic climate control, and has automatic wipers. Additionally, selectable driving modes let you swap between traction options, and the front seats also have memory functions. To help add to the cargo space, you can split-fold the rear seats.
You'll also get access to the COMAND infotainment system by Mercedes on an 8-inch display screen, which also comes with Bluetooth connectivity. A rearview camera, the Mbrace emergency telematics, and a sleepy-driver monitoring system all help with safety. Finally, there's an audio system with two USB ports, two SD slots, a CD player, and HD radio.
The AMG CLA 45 adds two inches to the wheels, swaps the steering wheel to a sportier one, uses LED headlights, and has a premium 12-speaker sound system by Harman Kardon. Also, you'll get stronger brakes and a sport exhaust system with unique aerodynamic exterior styling.
In all cases, there are several options packages to look into to upgrade your experience. To start off, there is the Premium package, which comes with a hands-free trunk lid, satellite radio, keyless ignition, keyless entry, and blind-spot monitoring. A universal garage door opener and automatic dimming mirrors come from the Convenience package, and the Interior package improves the leather upholstery, the door trim, and the dashboard.
For voice controls, the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and access to the navigation system, you'll want the Multimedia package. Finally, the Driver Assistance package adds lane departure warning with intervention as well as adaptive cruise control.
Buyers of the CLA trim can add many of the styling elements from the AMG trim. Beyond this, you can add the Harman Kardon stereo system, the adjustable suspension, an automated parking system, and a panoramic sunroof as standalone options.
This year, the AMG CLA 45 gets the Convenience and Premium packages as standard fare.
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA has quick transmission shifting and a robust four-cylinder engine, giving it enough performance to satisfy those who own the bigger C-Class sedan. Unfortunately, the transmission is also prone to quirkiness when driving around town.
The marriage of the dual-clutch automatic and the 208-hp four-cylinder engine lets the CLA reach milestone speeds in no time at all. For example, it takes a rapid 6.4 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour, with the most significant throttle coming after 20 mph.
Even when you're stopping and going in heavy city traffic, the brakes on the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA work predictably, making them easy to control. It takes 121 feet to reach a complete stop from 60 miles per hour, which is typical for its size and segment.
The Benz's steering wheel has nice weighting to it, feeling neither too light nor too heavy. There's sharp feedback, and there is enough articulation for precision parking in lots. On pavement, though, there isn't much feedback from the tires so you won't know what they're up to.
The poise and control of the CLA instill confidence on twisted roads, so you'll always feel stable behind the wheel. The transmission can react slowly, especially when you need to make a three-point turn. Sometimes, the engine sounds like it's revving too much as well.
