How to Calculate The Dealer Cost of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van:

Formula for Calculating Dealer Cost:

  • Example: Base Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van invoice price + the dealer Invoice price of options + destination - Holdback = Total Dealer Cost.
  • What is Holdback? A hidden amount that manufacturers give back to a dealer. It is a percentage of the MSRP or the Invoice price.

Total Dealer Cost - Rebate and Incentive + Taxes / Licensing Fees = True Dealer Cost. (You can get rebates and incentives here.)

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Overview:

Previously, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van didn't seem like it was made by the same company that produces the luxurious S-Class sedans. In essence, it was a stripped-down cargo or passenger van that looked like a block on wheels.

Yes, it drove like a Benz. Yes, it had some of the newest technology of its passenger vehicles. Nevertheless, when someone saw a Sprinter on the road, they didn't exclaim, "Look at that Mercedes-Benz van!" Especially if they didn't notice its famous emblem on the back windows.

As they say, that was then, this is now. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is not like those older models. It's not even like the 2018 version. Consumers who compare the two won’t realize they were made by the same company.

Why the change? First, to compete with European and American companies who take their cargo and passengers more seriously. Second, production was moved to South Carolina. Thus, there's a possibility some of that American design ethic seeped into their latest model.

What does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van have over its older siblings? Here's a breakdown.

What's New for 2019?

What's new is pretty much everything.

Exterior

Both minor and major changes to the design. From the back, consumers should notice new LED taillights and a shift of the Mercedes-Benz emblem from the windows to the doors.

Changes to the front are more significant. It sports a new fascia and grille along with optional LED headlights. As they walk around the van, drivers will notice the character line of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is flatter instead of curved.

Interior

The biggest transformation is around the cockpit. The 2019 Sprinter has a push-button start, updated steering wheel, comfortable seats, and well-designed open spaces. It also features the latest model infotainment system. This comes as a seven-inch touch screen with a 10.3-inch option if consumers choose an upgraded Sprinter model.

Safety

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van ups the safety with numerous features important when transporting either cargo or passengers. These include lane assist with blind spot monitoring, 360-degree parking camera, and forward collision mitigation.

Styles and Trims

The Sprinter Van offers consumers four styles -- Cargo, Crew, Chassis, and Passenger. Starting MSRPs range from $33,800 for Cargo to $43,000 for the 15-seat Passenger model. The Cargo, Crew, and Passenger versions have an enclosed storage area. The Chassis style has a van cockpit and open storage bed.

Each style has its own number of trims, and they differ in standards as well as additional options. The style with the most is the Cargo with five. It offers the standard 1500, 2500, 3500, 3500XD, and 4500. The model options under these trims are too numerous to mention. However, they feature items like high-roofs, an extended wheelbase, and increased storage capacity.

The Crew eliminates the 1500 version and focus on the remaining trims. The Passenger style only comes in 1500 and 2500 trims. The main difference is capacity. The Passenger 1500 holds 12 while the 2500 holds 15 passengers.

Even the Chassis style of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van has two trims -- the 3500XD and the 4500. The difference is in towing capacity and wheelbase. Lower models within the trim offer a 144-inch base while higher-end models provide a 170" base.

Power and Performance

Currently, all styles and trims of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van have a 6-Cylinder turbocharged diesel under their hoods with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Though drivers won't be doing 0-60 in under four seconds, they'll get a smooth ride as the transmission revs to higher gears.

Those who aren't fond of diesel engines can take heart. Mercedes-Benz is producing a gas engine that's already available for passenger vans.

Driving the Sprinter feels like cruising in a C-Class sedan. The steering is responsive to avoid potholes, curves, and other enemies of a commercial van. In addition, the powerful suspension absorbs many of the road's bumps to keep cargo and passengers stabilized.

Fuel Efficiency

The average miles per gallon (MPG) hasn't changed between the 2018 and 2019 models of the Sprinter van. Currently, it hovers around 14.5 MPG. However, this can vary depending on custom options.

For instance, gas engines can cause a shift upward in mileage. So can smaller wheelbases. The MPG might be lower for vans that can carry more cargo and passengers. It can also be weaker for the Chassis style due to the drag on an open bed.

Even at the top end cost of $57,000 for a Passenger model, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is a good choice to add to a commercial fleet. Not only due to its numerous options but also because of its restyling. This is particularly true of the Passenger version.

A note about rebates: Most rebates are subtracted from the "on the road" figure. In most cases, you can have the rebate if you are arranging your own financing or you are paying cash. If you decide to use the manufacturer’s low interest financing, you do not usually get the rebate. Ask your dealer for details.
