For its 2013 introduction, the BRZ refreshed drivers from suffering another dry generic option. Back then, there weren't many rear-wheel-drive lightweight sporting vehicles to choose from. Subaru's contribution stood out for its inexpensive price, small size, and smooth dynamics.
It had its problems, though, the main one being the 2.0L four-cylinder engine. It sounded rough in the city and didn't offer much torque when it counted.
The 2019 Subaru BRZ has changed over the years, but it's still fundamentally the same car as it was six years ago. Two years ago, Subaru swapped the engines, but the effects were barely noticeable. The automaker also tweaked the suspension a few time over the years, but that too has not really affected the drive.
Other alternatives exist if the power of the 2019 Subaru BRZ isn't enough. Still, Subaru's small sports coupe is affordable, lightweight, and ultimately rewarding to drive for most.
What's New for 2019?
Subaru first released the BRZ in 2013, and the 2019 Subaru BRZ is part of this generation. This year, the navigation system gets some updates. Also, there's a new limited-edition trim: Series. Gray.
Capable of seating four, the 2019 Subaru BRZ is a two-door sport coupe.
For the best balance of creature comforts and technology, you'll want to look at the Limited trim. It comes with smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is something missing from some competitors. Adding the Performance package helps make the BRZ Limited feel and act more powerful. Regardless of your choice, the manual gearbox is worth consideration.
There are three 2019 Subaru BRZ trims: the Premium, the Limited, and the Series.Gray. Each one comes with a 2.0L four-cylinder coupled with a six-speed manual transmission, delivering its power to the rear wheels. This powertrain generates 205 horses and 156 pound-feet of torque; with the six-speed automatic swap, the number drops by 5 across the board.
Starting at the base trim, the Premium, gets you summer performance tires on 17-inch wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, a height-adjustable driver's seat, and other basic features. An eight-speaker sound system with two USB ports, satellite radio, a CD player, and aux capability stands out for its class. You'll also get a trunk spoiler for body style, a multi-function steering wheel wrapped in comfortable leather, heated mirrors, and cloth upholstery.
Going up the trim ladder brings you to the 2019 Subaru BRZ Limited, which introduces a more prominent 7-inch touchscreen. The screen lets you access TomTom navigation, or you can use your own smartphone navigation and other features via the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Beyond technology, the Limited gets you dual-zone auto climate control, LED foglights, heated leather seats, and simulated suede upholstery.
The Limited is the only trim that gets access to the automatic transmission swap, but this isn't recommended. Besides this trade, you can also get the Performance package for a wealth of additional features. These include high-performance brakes by Brembo, performance dampers by Sachs, and alloy wheels painted grey.
Finally, the uppermost level is the Series.Gray trim, which is a limited-edition trim for this year. Though it fetches the highest price of all BRZs, it does so for good reasons. For starters, you get all of the features listed in the Performance package without having to upgrade them. Also, you'll get a frameless rearview mirror for better cabin style, wheels exclusive to the trim, and special badges and trims not found on other BRZ trims. All in all, it's worth the upgrade if you're into style and were going to get the Limited Performance anyway.
As far as handling, precision, and overall driving feel are concerned, the 2019 Subaru BRZ stands out in its class. It's entertaining to take this car on winding roads, but it's limited by its engine. The noise and the performance are both disappointing and take away from the full potential of the BRZ.
Equipped with manual transmission, the BRZ doesn't speed out the gate with aggression. This difficulty is due to quick clutch engagement, and so it takes nearly seven seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a standstill. Other sport coupes drive much faster than that. Additionally, the engine has no sense of midrange torque, which translates to sluggishness when merging onto the highway and when trying to overpass.
The brakes feel firm and consistent, so you'll learn how to control your stop at any speed around the city. The tires have proper grip, and the brakes are strong. However, the pedal starts to get less predictable when driving aggressively on the highway.
Steering feedback is fast enough almost to feel predictive, which is suitable for the type of car the BRZ is; it means smooth driving with minimal effort.
This year's Subaru is all-around playful, and it feels great to drive a car that doesn't require riding the redline to get that burst of adrenaline. It's essential to manage the car's rear-end grip, though, due to its rear-wheel-drive setup. If you lose focus or get too reactive, the BRZ darts.
To change gears, you'll have to employ some effort, and the shifting is a little jerky, too. Thank the flat-four engine for this one; it has good feedback up until 3,000 rpm, which is right when you want it most.
